Evidence for O-atom exchange in the O(^1D) + N_2O reaction as the source of mass-independent isotopic fractionation in atmospheric N_2O

Recent experiments have shown that in the oxygen isotopic exchange reaction for O(^1D) + CO_2 the elastic channel is approximately 50% that of the inelastic channel [Perri et al., 2003]. We propose an analogous oxygen atom exchange reaction for the isoelectronic O(^1D) + N_2O system to explain the mass-independent isotopic fractionation (MIF) in atmospheric N_2O. We apply quantum chemical methods to compute the energetics of the potential energy surfaces on which the O(^1D) + N_2O reaction occurs. Preliminary modeling results indicate that oxygen isotopic exchange via O(^1D) + N_2O can account for the MIF oxygen anomaly if the oxygen atom isotopic exchange rate is 30–50% that of the total rate for the reactive channels

Based upon the authors’ questioning of the existence of the C_(2v) intermediate, we have reviewed our evidence for the existence of this state. It now appears that this state was in fact an artifact of our calculation [Yung et al., 2004], and was a saddle point rather than a true minimum. Our desire to provide a timely response to this criticism has kept us from determining exactly what minimum structure will be obtained by a full minimization at the level of theory employed. However, it is clear that the C_(2v) symmetry of the compound is broken in such a way that the two N-O bonds are no longer equivalent. We are grateful to the authors for helping us resolve this issue

Diffractive optical elements on non-flat substrates using electron beam lithography

    Get PDF
The present disclosure describes a technique for creating diffraction gratings on curved surfaces with electron beam lithography. The curved surface can act as an optical element to produce flat and aberration-free images in imaging spectrometers. In addition, the fabrication technique can modify the power structure of the grating orders so that there is more energy in the first order than for a typical grating. The inventors noticed that by using electron-beam lithography techniques, a variety of convex gratings that are well-suited to the requirements of imaging spectrometers can be manufactured

Liquid crystal blazed grating beam deflector

A multiple-angle liquid crystal blazed grating beam deflector has been developed. It consists of a stack of liquid crystal blazed gratings where each layer can deflect incident light with very high efficiency into one of two different directions depending on the driving condition. Four steering angles (10.8 degrees, 7.2 degrees, 3.6 degrees, 0 degrees) with about 70% diffraction efficiency are demonstrated with 15 V. The device's working principle, design considerations, fabrication process, and characterization results are described

    (Ferrocenylthiophosphonato-κS)(triphenylphosphane-κP)gold(I) dichloromethane monosolvate

In the title compound, [AuFe(C5H5)(C5H5O2PS)(C18H15P)]·CH2Cl2, the two-coordinate gold(I) atom shows a slightly distorted linear arrangement, with a P—Au—S bond angle of 176.81 (6)°. The difference in P=O and P—O(H) bond lengths, which are 1.503 (6) and 1.541 (5) Å, respectively, implies there is apparently no delocalization between the P—O bonds, and the proton appears to be localized on one O atom only. In the crystal structure, intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link dinuclear molecules into chains propagated in the [010] direction. The dichloromethane solvent molecule was disordered between two positions in a 0.63 (3):0.37 (3) ratio

Reticular Basement Membrane Vessels Are Increased in COPD Bronchial Mucosa by Both Factor VIII and Collagen IV Immunostaining and Are Hyperpermeable

Background and Objective. Using Collagen IV staining, we have previously reported that the reticular basement membrane (Rbm) is hypervascular and the lamina propria (LP) is hypovascular in COPD airways. This study compared Collagen IV staining with vessels marked with anti-Factor VIII and examined vessel permeability in bronchial biopsies from COPD and normal subjects using albumin staining. Results. Anti-Collagen IV antibody detected more vessels in the Rbm (P = 0.002) and larger vessels in both Rbm (P < 0.001) and LP (P = 0.003) compared to Factor VIII. COPD airways had more vessels (with greater permeability) in the Rbm (P = 0.01) and fewer vessels (with normal permeability) in the LP compared to controls with both Collagen IV and Factor VIII antibodies (P = 0.04 and P = 0.01). Conclusion. Rbm vessels were increased in number and were hyperpermeable in COPD airways. Anti-Collagen IV and anti-Factor VIII antibodies did not uniformly detect the same vessel populations; the first is likely to reflect larger and older vessels with the latter reflecting smaller, younger vessels

Lymphocytic Esophagitis in Nonachalasia Primary Esophageal Motility Disorders: Improved Criteria, Prevalence, Strength of Association, and Natural History.

Lymphocytic esophagitis (LE) is a histologic pattern with no established clinical correlates in the majority of patients. The goal of this study was to evaluate the association between nonachalasia primary esophageal motility disorders (PEMD) and LE. Sixty-nine patients with PEMD and esophageal biopsies, including 22 with nutcracker esophagus, 33 with ineffective motility, and 14 with diffuse spasm, constituted the study group. The control group consisted of 70 patients with severe dysmotility-negative gastroesophageal reflux disease requiring referral for Nissen fundoplication. To improve the criteria for LE, a lymphocyte reference range at different esophageal levels was first established in 17 healthy volunteers. The cutoffs for normal intraepithelial lymphocytes, defined as lymphocyte levels not exceeding mean level±2 SDs, were set at 62, 46, and 41 lymphocytes per high-power field at 0 to 2, 5, and 10 cm above the gastroesophageal junction, respectively. Predominantly focal peripapillary LE was observed in approximately 40% of patients with nutcracker esophagus or diffuse spasm and in 20% of patients with ineffective motility, in comparison with 4% of patients with dysmotility-negative gastroesophageal reflux disease (P<0.035 vs. any subtype of PEMD). Overall, LE was strongly associated with PEMD in multivariate analysis (adjusted odds ratio, 7.93; 95% confidence interval, 2.26-27.9; P=0.001). LE had a chronic course in 56% of the patients with follow-up biopsies. In conclusion, LE has a strong association with PEMD, suggesting the utility of LE in raising the possibility of PEMD
