    Case report: Neonatal case of intrauterine gastrointestinal bleeding with suspected cow's milk allergy or neonatal transient eosinophilic colitis

    The patient was a female newborn. Ultrasonography performed at 35 weeks and 3 days of gestation revealed honeycomb-like dilatation and peri-intestinal strong echo patterns in the gastrointestinal tract. Nonreassuring fetal status was also diagnosed, leading to an emergency Cesarean section. The baby's birth weight was 2,127 g, whereas the Apgar 1 min and 5 min scores were 8 and 9, respectively. The amniotic fluid showed fecal and hematogenous turbidity. After delivery, there was hematogenous intragastric residue and defecation. Thereafter, the bloody intragastric residue and fecal discharge improved. Aggregations of eosinophils in the stool were observed, and gastrointestinal allergy was suspected. Enteral feeding with the hydrolyzed protein formula was initiated and symptoms did not recur. The allergen-specific lymphocyte stimulation test was positive for lactoferrin, and the patient was suspected with neonatal cow's milk allergy or neonatal transient eosinophilic colitis. After her condition stabilized, an oral challenge test was performed using breast milk without dairy products, and the test was negative. Gastrointestinal allergy is rare even in utero, and when gastrointestinal bleeding is suspected in utero, hemorrhagic or surgical gastrointestinal diseases should be ruled out first; however, the possibility of gastrointestinal allergy should also be kept in mind

    Discovery of a new pulsating X-ray source with a 1549.1-s period, AX J183220-0840

    A new pulsating X-ray source, AX J183220-0840, with a 1549.1-s period was discovered at R.A.= 18h32m20s and Dec.=-8d40'30'' (J2000, uncertainty=0.6degree) during an ASCA observation on the Galactic plane. The source was observed two times, in 1997 and in 1999. A phase-averaged X-ray flux of 1.1E-11 ergs cm-2 s-1 and pulsation period of 1549.1+/-0.4 s were consistently obtained from these two observations. The X-ray spectrum was represented by a flat absorbed power-law with a photon-index of =~0.8 and an absorption column density of =~1.3E22 cm-2. Also, a signature of iron K-shell line emission with a centroid of 6.7 keV and an equivalent width of approximately 450 eV was detected. From the pulsation period and the iron-line feature, AX J183220-0840 is likely to be a magnetic white dwarf binary with a complexly absorbed thermal spectrum with a temperature of about 10 keV.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    A Multilingual Chat System with Image Presentation for Detecting Mistranslation

    We have designed and developed a multilingual chat system, MCHI (Multilingual Chat with Hint Images), which is based on machine translation and equipped with a presentation function of images related to the contents of the messages by utterers so that listeners are able to notice mistranslation. MCHI accepts English, French, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese languages. It uses the Google API to retrieve related images from the image posting site Flickr. As a result of evaluation experiment, we have observed that participants detected the mismatch of a translated message with its related image. According to the answers of participants for a questionnaire, it turned out that the usability of the MCHI system is good enough though the related images are not satisfactory

    Case report: A case of fetal umbilical vein varix presenting disseminated intravascular coagulation, polycythemia, and neonatal hepatitis in an extremely low birth weight infant

    Reports on the clinical course of fetal umbilical vein varix in premature infants are limited. We report a case of an extremely low body weight infant with intra-abdominal umbilical vein varix who developed disseminated intravascular coagulation, polycythemia, and hyperbilirubinemia after birth; late-onset neonatal hepatitis; and fetal thrombotic vasculopathy confirmed by placental histopathology. Ultrasonography after birth showed a dilated portion of the umbilical vein at the hepatic hilum with thrombi inside. We speculate that the umbilical vein varix caused the fetal thrombotic vasculopathy, and the presence of umbilical vein varix and fetal thrombotic vasculopathy in combination with prematurity caused coagulopathy, polycythemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and hepatitis. Despite the favorable outcomes reported in the literature, premature infants with umbilical vein varix may require careful observation and management for coagulopathy and late-onset hepatitis. Furthermore, placental histopathology could aid in the understanding of various clinical outcomes in infants with umbilical vein varices

    金沢大学学際科学実験センターアイソトープ総合研究施設Purpose: We have developed a 186Re-mercaptoacetylglycylglycylglycine complex-conjugated bisphosphonate (186Re-MAG3-HBP) for the treatment of painful bone metastases. We assumed competitive inhibitors of protein binding to be useful for procuring a favorable biodistribution of 186Re-MAG3-HBP for the palliation of bone pain because it has been reported that the concurrent administration of 99mTc-MAG3 and drugs with high affinity for serum protein produced competitive displacement at specific binding sites and enhanced total clearance and tissue distribution. Methods: The displacement effects of several protein-binding inhibitors on the protein binding of 186Re-MAG3-HBP were investigated. Biodistribution experiments were performed by intravenously administering 186Re-MAG3-HBP into rats with ceftriaxone as a competitive protein-binding inhibitor or saline. Results: The protein binding of 186Re-MAG3-HBP in rat serum, human serum, and a human serum albumin solution was significantly decreased by the addition of ceftriaxone, which has high affinity for binding site I on serum albumin. In the biodistribution experiments, pretreatment with ceftriaxone enhanced the clearance of the radioactivity of 186Re-MAG3-HBP in blood and nontarget tissues but had no effect on accumulation in bone. Conclusions: The findings suggested that the use of protein-binding competitive inhibitors would be effective in improving the pharmacokinetics of radiopharmaceuticals with high affinity for serum protein. © 2008 Springer-Verlag

    The current state of marine debris on the seafloor in offshore area around Japan

    Marine debris on the seafloor has not been thoroughly investigated, and there is little information compared to other types of marine debris. We conducted bottom trawl surveys to determine the present situation of marine debris on the seafloor in offshore areas around Japan. The survey was conducted in three sea areas with different characteristics. As a result, it was found that the amount of marine debris in submarine canyons (2926.1 items/km2) was higher than on the continental shelf. It was revealed that most marine debris on the seafloor is comprised of plastic products, and that debris on the seafloor retains its condition for a long time (over 30 years) without deterioration. In addition, the type of marine debris is affected by the industries operating in each area. Continuing to investigate marine debris on the seafloor in more areas will contribute to solving the problem of marine debris

    A multilevel dataset of microplastic abundance in the world’s upper ocean and the Laurentian Great Lakes

    A total of 8218 pelagic microplastic samples from the world’s oceans were synthesized to create a dataset composed of raw, calibrated, processed, and gridded data which are made available to the public. The raw microplastic abundance data were obtained by different research projects using surface net tows or continuous seawater intake. Fibrous microplastics were removed from the calibrated dataset. Microplastic abundance which fluctuates due to vertical mixing under different oceanic conditions was standardized. An optimum interpolation method was used to create the gridded data; in total, there were 24.4 trillion pieces (8.2 × 104 ~ 57.8 × 104 tons) of microplastics in the world’s upper oceans

    On the effects of hull-girder vibration upon fatigue strength of a Post-Panamax container ship disaggregated by short-term sea state

    The effects of hull-girder vibration on the fatigue strength of a Post-Panamax container ship are discussed in the present paper. Firstly, the short-term sea states are categorized according to the occurrence probability of each sea state. Time histories of hull-girder stress in short-term sea states are calculated by means of a nonlinear simulation code of ship response assuming that the hull-girder is rigid and flexible. Then, the calculated stress peaks are processed by the rainflow counting method, where two different counting procedures are used based on the considerations of crack propagation behaviors. Finally, the fatigue damage in life time of the ship in each categorized short-term sea state is estimated by means of Miner’s rule. Based on the calculated results, the effects of hull-girder vibrations on the fatigue damage are clarified by disaggregated damage from short-term sea state

    Abstract The stress response is a physiological system for adapting to various internal and external stimuli. Corticotropin-releasing factor-producing neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN-CRF neurons) are known to play an important role in the stress response as initiators of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. However, the mechanism by which activity of PVN-CRF neurons is regulated by other neurons and bioactive substances remains unclear. Here, we developed a screening method using calcium imaging to identify how physiological substances directly affect the activity of PVN-CRF neurons. We used acute brain slices expressing a genetically encoded calcium indicator in PVN-CRF neurons using CRF-Cre recombinase mice and an adeno-associated viral vector under Cre control. PVN-CRF neurons were divided into ventral and dorsal portions. Bath application of candidate substances revealed 12 substances that increased and 3 that decreased intracellular calcium concentrations. Among these substances, angiotensin II and histamine mainly increased calcium in the ventral portion of the PVN-CRF neurons via AT1 and H1 receptors, respectively. Conversely, carbachol mainly increased calcium in the dorsal portion of the PVN-CRF neurons via both nicotinic and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Our method provides a precise and reliable means of evaluating the effect of a substance on PVN-CRF neuronal activity
