Labor Market Outcomes for Middle Eastern Immigrants in the Aftermath of the September 11th Attacks

    Get PDF
Media reports all over the USA reported that a wave of Islamophobia had gripped the USA after the September 11, 2001 attacks. It seemed as though the American population were blaming not the radicals but the Middle Easterners and the Muslims in general for the inhumane act. Some reports even suggested a new sort of McCarthyism in the USA but this time against the Middle Eastern populace. This paper investigates whether such discrimination transformed itself in the US labor market by conducting an econometric analysis, taking Becker’s taste for discrimination theory as its theoretical basis. It first analyzes whether there was a significant change in wage differentials between Middle Eastern population groups compared to native Americans pre and post 2001. Secondly, it accomplishes a regional analysis to see whether the populations from certain Middle Eastern regions were discriminated more than other regions. Lastly, the paper examines other labor market outcomes such as labor force participation rates and unemployment rates, to determine whether discrimination was present in other avenues and to provide an all encompassing picture of Middle Eastern immigrants in the US labor market before and after the attack of September 11th

Homicidal poisoning with para-phenylenediamine hair dye: a case report

    Get PDF
Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) is a widely used chemical in various hair dye formulations. Due to its cheap price and easy availability, it emerges as a major cause of suicidal poisoning. It carries high morbidity and mortality and does not have any specific antidote. We reported an unusual type of poisoning of a 44-year-old man with PPD and how he was managed with an excellent outcome

Traditional And Virtual Performance Management Functions In The Age Of Information Technology

    Get PDF
The effects of information technology developments on the traditional roles of managers over the past decades have been extraordinary, especially when we consider the numerous changes these developments have brought to the global environment of business. The paper examines these effects by examining the changing nature of managerial roles in historical and contemporary contexts. The paper briefly describes  managerial roles and functions dating back to the Industrial Revolution and Scientific Management era, with transitions up to the present technological and service-oriented market economies in which the use of information technology (IT) and knowledge have become  vital tools for survival, growth, the  building of competitive advantage, and success in achieving organizational goals. The paper examines the effects of information technology (IT) developments on the role of managers using the four fundamental functions of management theory: planning, organizing, controlling, and leading. The paper concludes with an examination of information technology developments on the roles of managers from a Mintzbergian viewpoint

Epistemic insight: Teaching about science and RE in secondary schools

    Get PDF
This article reports on a teaching intervention for year 9/10 students (age 13-14) in secondary school biology and Religious Education (RE) lessons which was partly intended to deepen students’ reflections, empathy and literacy when considering the similarities, differences and relationships between religion and science. The intervention proved to be generally successful in meeting its aims for the students and also led to a number of the participating teachers changing their views in ways that were more positive about the worth of examining such issues in the classroom

Performance Management Execution For Effective And Continuous Employee Appraisals

    Get PDF
Most new managers tend to be fearful of assessing the performance of their employees. However, when planned in advance, performance assessment sessions need not be unpleasant or uncomfortable for the manager or the employee. There are several phases in the performance appraisal process, including planning, execution, assessment, and performance review. Based on the review of literature and personal experiences of the authors, this paper starts with a discussion of performance management programs and focuses on the performance execution aspect of a comprehensive performance appraisal system. The authors discuss what managers can and must do to successfully implement an effective appraisal system. Finally, the authors provide practical recommendations for what managers and supervisors should avoid in their employee assessment and evaluation processes

The purpose of this case is toinstill inthe reader the importance of human resource management policies and practices and how they contribute to an international companys competitiveness. International Human Resources Management (IHRM) and sound HR practices should be present at all levels within the context of strategic business objectives, culture, and resources management constraints. This case willshowcase Alveolar International, Inc., an international corporationthat specializes in the manufacturing and sales ofdental implants. It will include an overview and history, an analysis of their management constraints, some examples of non-compliance of HR practices within the firm and itseffect on employee morale, and lastly, the actions that should have been taken place from an IHRM perspective. An explanation will be provided as to how these very same blunders could have potentially contributed to the sale of the company and, furthermore, the takeover of Alveolar ina recent merger. The analysis is provided to the reader from the perspective of an employee of the corporation as well as a researcher. It should be noted that for the protection of employers and employees, the identities and names of those involved have been changed

Online College Education For Computer-Savvy Students: A Study Of Perceptions And Needs

    Get PDF
With new technologies and cyberspace-literate students, distance education has been in high demand and more schools are getting into online education. As such, understanding the needs of current and prospective learners has become especially important for success in the new millennium. Based on the learners’ needs and current technology status, this study provides a review on the feasibility of online education for modern students in a developed nation. Based on the survey of 203 undergraduate students, this research provides an assessment of their views, needs, and wants for the feasibility of offering online courses and programs. Such demographic variables as gender, ethnicity and education demonstrated statistically significant results. Recommendations are provided for administrators to enhance their online offerings as a result of the feedback from students. The document further explores online education, online operation, and other such variables that impact the success of students in higher education.&nbsp

Numerical Study of Turbulent Mixed Convection Heat Transfer in a Semi-Circle Cavity Contains a Rotating Cylinder

    Get PDF
The investigation of mixed convection inside the semi- circle cavity with a fixed cylinder and rotating has been performed numerically. The bottom wall was maintained to constant heat flux while the curved wall was subjected to ambient and an adiabatic rotating cylinder presence in center cavity . The computation fluid dynamics (CFD)modeling includes numerical solutions of the conservation equation for mass ,momentum and energy, numerical prediction by using ansys FLUENT version 15. The finite volume method were used for solving governing differential equations and the turbulence model was applied SST(K-ω) . The results were represented of streamlines, isotherm counters and distribution local Nusselt number at Rayleigh number 2.9×108 identical to heat flux q= 290w/m2 and angular velocity of cylinder ω=0 ,62.8,83.73 and 89.5rad/s clockwise and inclination angle of cavity 0°,30°and 90°.The result shows that the effect of both rotating cylinder ,inclination angle led to enhancement heat transfer. Keywords: Mixed convection, turbulence model , inclination angle , semicircle cavity. DOI: 10.7176/JNSR/9-18-02 Publication date:September 30th 201

The Perception Of Afghan-American Leaders Role In Economic Development Efforts In Afghanistan: A Study Of Gender Differences And Repatriation To The Motherland

    Get PDF
The majority of Afghanistans best educated and experienced generations of workers have become scattered expatriates living throughout the world. This brain-drain has taken place over a thirty-year period due to continuous violence, tragedy, and war throughout Afghanistan. As such, a rebuilding process now largely depends on the international community. This study of 58 male and 42 female Afghan-American respondents analyzes their perceptions regarding development opportunities in Afghanistan as well as their willingness to take part in the rebuilding process. It appears that there are some differences in the responses of males and females. The younger generation seems to be much more willing to go back and help in the rebuilding process. There seems to be a longevity effect: those who have been away from Afghanistan for a longer period of time are less willing to return for the rebuilding initiatives. Results and implications are presented
