    Parasite infection rather than tactile stimulation is the proximate cause of cleaning behaviour in reef fish.

    Cleaning behaviour is a popular example of non-kin cooperation. However, quantitative support for this is generally sparse and the alternative, that cleaners are parasitic, has also been proposed. Although the behaviour involves some of the most complex and highly developed interspecific communication signals known, the proximate causal factors for why clients seek cleaners are controversial. However, this information is essential to understanding the evolution of cleaning. I tested whether clients seek cleaners in response to parasite infection or whether clients seek cleaners for tactile stimulation regardless of parasite load. Parasite loads on client fish were manipulated and clients exposed to cleaner fish and control fish behind glass. I found that parasitized client fish spent more time than unparasitized fish next to a cleaner fish. In addition, parasitized clients spent more time next to cleaners than next to control fish, whereas unparasitized fish were not attracted to cleaners. This study shows, I believe for the first time, which is somewhat surprising, that parasite infection alone causes clients to seek cleaning by cleaners and provides insight into how this behaviour evolved

    Host preference and specialization in Gnathia sp., a common parasitic isopod of coral reef fishes

    A gnathiid species (Crustacea: Isopoda; one of the most common ectoparasites of coral reef fishes) from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, was allowed to choose among fishes from three different families to feed on (using two species of fishes per family). Gnathiids showed a strong preference for labrids, rarely feeding on pomacentrids or apogonids. In a separate experiment, gnathiid host preference did not vary among three labrid fish species. Gnathiids that fed on labrids had higher survival than those that fed on apogonids. Male gnathiids that fed on labrids also moulted to the adult stage more quickly. This suggests that host specialization and local adaptation might be occurring between these ectoparasites and their host fishes at the host fish family level

    Captive Hemigymnus melapterus exposed to large numbers of cultured juvenile parasitic isopods (Gnathia sp.) had significantly lower haematocrit (median 27-62% +/- 5-83% inter-quartile range) than uninfected, control fish (median 32-73% +/- 4-90%). This study is the first to show that juvenile Gnathia sp. reduce total blood volume in H. melapterus. The low haematocrit in infected fish was most likely due to plasma replacing erythrocytes lost as a result of isopods feeding on fish blood. (c) 2005 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

    Bacterially derived 400 nm particles for encapsulation and cancer cell targeting of chemotherapeutics

    Systemic administration of chemotherapeutic agents results in indiscriminate drug distribution and severe toxicity. Here we report a technology potentially overcoming these shortcomings through encapsulation and cancer cell-specific targeting of chemotherapeutics in bacterially derived 400 nm minicells. We discovered that minicells can be packaged with therapeutically significant concentrations of chemotherapeutics of differing charge, hydrophobicity, and solubility. Targeting of minicells via bispecific antibodies to receptors on cancer cell membranes results in endocytosis, intracellular degradation, and drug release. This affects highly significant tumor growth inhibition and regression in mouse xenografts and case studies of lymphoma in dogs despite administration of minute amounts of drug and antibody; a factor critical for limiting systemic toxicity that should allow the use of complex regimens of combination chemotherapy
