Event-related potentials elicited by spoken relative clauses

    No full text
Sentence-length event-related potential (ERP) waveforms were obtained from 23 scalp sites as 24 subjects listened to normally spoken sentences of various syntactic structures. The critical materials consisted of 36 sentences each containing one of 2 types of relative clauses that differ in processing difficulty, namely Subject Object (SO) and Subject Subject (SS) relative clauses. Sentence-length ERPs showed several differences in the slow scalp potentials elicited by SO and SS sentences that were similar in their temporal dynamics to those elicited by the same stimuli in a word-by-word reading experiment, although the effects in the two modalities have non identical distributions. Just as for written sentences, there was a large, fronto-central negativity beginning at the linguistically defined "gap" in the SO sentences; this effect was largest for listeners with above-median comprehension rates, and is hypothesized to index changes in on-line processing demands during comprehension

The Aoki phase for N_f=2 Wilson fermions revisited

We report on a numerical reinvestigation of the Aoki phase in full lattice QCD with two flavors of unimproved Wilson fermions. For zero temperature the Aoki phase can be confirmed at inverse coupling β=4.0\beta=4.0 and β=4.3\beta=4.3, but not at β=4.6\beta=4.6 and β=5.0\beta=5.0. At non-zero temperature the Aoki phase was found to exist also at β=4.6\beta=4.6.Comment: 3 pages LaTex, 5 figures. Parallel talk at Lattice2003(Theory

Direct evidence for superconductivity in the organic charge density-wave compound alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 under hydrostatic pressure

We present direct evidence of a superconducting state existing in the title compound below 300 mK under quasi-hydrostatic pressure. The superconducing transition is observed in the whole pressure range studied, 0 < P < 4 kbar. However, the character of the transition drastically changes with suppressing the charge-density wave state.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figure

Operating characteristics of the Langley Mach 7 Scramjet Test Facility

    Get PDF
Operating characteristics of the Langley Mach 7 Scramjet Test Facility are described. The facility is designed for testing airframe integrated scramjet (supersonic combustion ramjet) engine models. Features include duplication of the flight Mach number total enthalpy, flight altitude simulation, and simulation of engine airframe integration effects such a bow shock wave precompression and boundary layer ingestion by the engine. Data obtained from facility calibration and from tests of a hydrogen burning, airframe integrated scramjet are discussed. An adverse interaction between the facility flow and the scramjet engine flow during combustion of the fuel is described
