    Hamiltonian Dynamics of Yang-Mills Fields on a Lattice

    We review recent results from studies of the dynamics of classical Yang-Mills fields on a lattice. We discuss the numerical techniques employed in solving the classical lattice Yang-Mills equations in real time, and present results exhibiting the universal chaotic behavior of nonabelian gauge theories. The complete spectrum of Lyapunov exponents is determined for the gauge group SU(2). We survey results obtained for the SU(3) gauge theory and other nonlinear field theories. We also discuss the relevance of these results to the problem of thermalization in gauge theories.Comment: REVTeX, 51 pages, 20 figure

    Learning abroad and graduate employability: challenges articulating international learning outcomes

    Growing numbers of Australian undergraduate students are participating in short-term international experiences as part of their degree courses. In addition to any discipline specific knowledge or skills learnt, such international programs provide students with the opportunity to develop graduate attributes such as intercultural communication skills and professional readiness for careers in globalised workplaces. To facilitate their transition to graduate employment, it is important that students are able to articulate the learning outcomes of international programs and apply them to professional contexts. However, this is a complex task for students that has not been adequately addressed in university learning programs. To address this gap, this paper reports on a study of the experiences of 55 undergraduate students from a range of disciplines who had completed a learning abroad program. It analyses interview data on the challenges students faced to connect their international experience with their future professions. Results indicate a complex range of potential challenges for individual students relating to their career management skills, developing professional identity, task-related performance issues, and perceptions of the relevance of international programs for employability. The paper establishes the necessity for universities to maximise the affordances of learning abroad programs by adequately supporting students to realise global graduate career opportunities

    Classifying LEP Data with Support Vector Algorithms

    We have studied the application of different classification algorithms in the analysis of simulated high energy physics data. Whereas Neural Network algorithms have become a standard tool for data analysis, the performance of other classifiers such as Support Vector Machines has not yet been tested in this environment.     Observation of opto-mechanical multistability in a high Q torsion balance oscillator

    We observe the opto-mechanical multistability of a macroscopic torsion balance oscillator. The torsion oscillator forms the moving mirror of a hemi-spherical laser light cavity. When a laser beam is coupled into this cavity, the radiation pressure force of the intra-cavity beam adds to the torsion wire's restoring force, forming an opto-mechanical potential. In the absence of optical damping, up to 23 stable trapping regions were observed due to local light potential minima over a range of 4 micrometer oscillator displacement. Each of these trapping positions exhibits optical spring properties. Hysteresis behavior between neighboring trapping positions is also observed. We discuss the prospect of observing opto-mechanical stochastic resonance, aiming at enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in gravity experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    A Radio Transmitter for Quail

    This paper describes a small radio-transmitter that has been developed specifically for use on quail. The transmitter weighs 5g, is disk-shaped (25mm diameter X 7mm thick) and is worn on the chest. It is kept in place by a harness made from nylon covered, stainless-steel wire that also functions as the antenna. Because of the transmitter\u27s light weight, shape, and position, quail seem to tolerate it very well. Also, it cannot be seen by aerial predators. The nominal signal consists of 30 msec pulses with a frequency of 1 ha. Movement produces one extra 40 rnsec pulse per cycle, 500 msec after the 30 msec pulse. These characteristics allow for relatively simple automatic detection and recording of activity. The transmission range, using a commercially available 3-element Yagi and receiver, exceeds one-half mile. Life expectancy is about 60 days. Components for the transmitter cost about $25.00 (1981)
