In situ wavelength calibration of the edge CXS spectrometers on JET
A method for obtaining an accurate wavelength calibration over the entire focal plane of the JET
edge CXS spectrometers is presented that uses a combination of the fringe pattern created with a Fabry–Pérot etalon and a neon lamp for cross calibration. The accuracy achieved is 0.03 Å, which is the same range of uncertainty as when neglecting population effects on the rest wavelength of the CX line. For the edge CXS diagnostic, this corresponds to a flow velocity of 4.5 km/s in the toroidal direction or 1.9 km/s in the poloidal direction.EURATOM 63305

Population modelling of the He II energy levels in tokamak plasmas: I. Collisional excitation model
Helium is widely used as a fuel or minority gas in laboratory fusion experiments, and will
be present as ash in DT thermonuclear plasmas. It is therefore essential to have a good
understanding of its atomic physics. To this end He II population modelling has been
undertaken for the spectroscopic levels arising from shells with principal quantum number n =
1 to 5. This paper focuses on a collisional excitation model; ionization and recombination
will be considered in a subsequent article. Heavy particle collisional excitation rate
coefficients have been generated to supplement the currently-available atomic data for He II,
and are presented for proton, deuteron, triton and α-particle projectiles. The widely-used
criterion for levels within an n shell being populated in proportion to their statistical weights
is reassessed with the most recent atomic data, and found not to apply to the He II levels at
tokamak densities (1018–1021 m-3). Consequences of this and other likely sources of errors are
quantified, as is the effect of differing electron and ion temperatures. Line intensity ratios,
including the so-called ‘branching ratios’ and the fine-structure β1, β2, β3 and γ ratios, are
discussed, the latter with regard to their possible use as diagnostics.EURATOM 633053Research Councils UK EP/P012450/
High-resolution tungsten spectroscopy relevant to the diagnostic of high-temperature tokamak plasmas
The x-ray transitions in Cu- and Ni-like tungsten ions in the 5.19–5.26 A wavelength range that are relevant ˚ as a high-temperature tokamak diagnostic, in particular for JET in the ITER-like wall configuration, have been studied. Tungsten spectra were measured at the upgraded Shanghai- Electron Beam Ion Trap operated with electron-beam energies from 3.16 to 4.55 keV. High-resolution measurements were performed by means of a flat Si 111 crystal spectrometer equipped by a CCD camera. The experimental wavelengths were determined with an accuracy of 0.3–0.4 mA. The wavelength of the ground-state transition in Cu-like tungsten from the ˚ 3p53d104s4d [(3/2,(1/2,5/2)2]1/2 level was measured. All measured wavelengths were compared with those measured from JET ITER-like wall plasmas and with other experiments and various theoretical predictions including COWAN, RELAC, multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock (MCDF), and FAC calculations. To obtain a higher accuracy from theoretical predictions, the MCDF calculations were extended by taking into account correlation effects (configuration-interaction approach). It was found that such an extension brings the calculations closer to the experimental values in comparison with other calculations.National Magnetic Confinement Fusion Program of China 2015GB117000National Natural Science Foundation of China 11374061EURATOM 63305
A lower limit on the dark particle mass from dSphs
We use dwarf spheroidal galaxies as a tool to attempt to put precise lower
limits on the mass of the dark matter particle, assuming it is a sterile
neutrino. We begin by making cored dark halo fits to the line of sight velocity
dispersions as a function of projected radius (taken from Walker et al. 2007)
for six of the Milky Way's dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We test Osipkov-Merritt
velocity anisotropy profiles, but find that no benefit is gained over constant
velocity anisotropy. In contrast to previous attempts, we do not assume any
relation between the stellar velocity dispersions and the dark matter ones, but
instead we solve directly for the sterile neutrino velocity dispersion at all
radii by using the equation of state for a partially degenerate neutrino gas
(which ensures hydrostatic equilibrium of the sterile neutrino halo). This
yields a 1:1 relation between the sterile neutrino density and velocity
dispersion, and therefore gives us an accurate estimate of the Tremaine-Gunn
limit at all radii. By varying the sterile neutrino particle mass, we locate
the minimum mass for all six dwarf spheroidals such that the Tremaine-Gunn
limit is not exceeded at any radius (in particular at the centre). We find
sizeable differences between the ranges of feasible sterile neutrino particle
mass for each dwarf, but interestingly there exists a small range 270-280eV
which is consistent with all dSphs at the 1- level.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
Nonequilibrium wetting transitions with short range forces
We analyze within mean-field theory as well as numerically a KPZ equation
that describes nonequilibrium wetting. Both complete and critical wettitng
transitions were found and characterized in detail. For one-dimensional
substrates the critical wetting temperature is depressed by fluctuations. In
addition, we have investigated a region in the space of parameters (temperature
and chemical potential) where the wet and nonwet phases coexist. Finite-size
scaling analysis of the interfacial detaching times indicates that the finite
coexistence region survives in the thermodynamic limit. Within this region we
have observed (stable or very long-lived) structures related to spatio-temporal
intermittency in other systems. In the interfacial representation these
structures exhibit perfect triangular (pyramidal) patterns in one (two
dimensions), that are characterized by their slope and size distribution.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Physical Review
