    Failure of woven fiber glass epoxy composite under charpy impact loading

    Woven glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite at 55 vol% fiber content was fabricated using conventional hand lay-up method. The impact strength of the prepared samples were measured under Charpy impact test at +50oC and - 50oC temperature. The fractured surface of composite samples were investigated using scanning electron microscope. The impact energy for samples fractured at +50oC was at 380 KJm-2 whereas the low temperature of - 50oC showed impact energy of 178 KJm-2. The high plastic deformation from the sample tested at +50oC is the evidence from the high amount of absorbed energy compared to -50oC which revealed lower deformation. At this subzero temperature, the increased brittleness produced extensive matrix cracking and fiber splitting. However, scanning electron fractograph at +50oC showed mixed failure mode of large delaminations, fiber splitting and matrix cracking. The impact values of 380 KJm-2 and 178 KJm-2 tested at +50oC and -50oC respectively would suggest that this composite is suitable to replace steel for impact applications and is safe to be used at both high and low environmental temperatures

    Wear behaviour at 600°C of surface engineered low-alloy steel containing TiC particles

    The work aimed to develop surfaces that could resist wear at high temperatures, thus achieving a prolonged component life. Surface modification of a low-alloy steel by incorporating TiC particles has been undertaken by melting the surface using a tungsten inert gas torch. The dry sliding wear behaviour at 600°C of the original and modified surfaces was compared. Microscopic examination of both surfaces showed glazed layers across the wear tracks, with differing amounts of oxide and homogeneity. Extensive wear occurred on the steel surface, which showed deformation of the wear scar tracks and a steadily increased friction coefficient. The TiC addition reduced the wear loss, coinciding with a glazed layer 33% thinner than that on the low-alloy steel sample

    Rethinking Watermark: Providing Proof of IP Ownership in Modern SoCs

    Intellectual property (IP) cores are essential to creating modern system-on-chips (SoCs). Protecting the IPs deployed in modern SoCs has become more difficult as the IP houses have been established across the globe over the past three decades. The threat posed by IP piracy and overuse has been a topic of research for the past decade or so and has led to creation of a field called watermarking. IP watermarking aims of detecting unauthorized IP usage by embedding excess, nonfunctional circuitry into the SoC. Unfortunately, prior work has been built upon assumptions that cannot be met within the modern SoC design and verification processes. In this paper, we first provide an extensive overview of the current state-of-the-art IP watermarking. Then, we challenge these dated assumptions and propose a new path for future effective IP watermarking approaches suitable for today\u27s complex SoCs in which IPs are deeply embedded

    Silicon carbide particulates incorporated into microalloyed steel surface using TIG: microstructure and properties

    Surface metal matrix composites have been developed to enhance properties such as erosion, wear and corrosion of alloys. In this study, ~5 µm or ~75 µm SiC particulates were preplaced on a microalloyed steel. Single track surface zones were melted by a tungsten inert gas torch, and the effect of two heat inputs, 420Jmm-1 and 840 Jmm-1,compared. The results showed that the samples melted using 420Jmm-1 were crack-free. Pin-on-disk wear testing under dry sliding conditions were conducted. The effects of load and sliding velocity were used to characterise the performance of the crack-free samples. Microstructural and X-ray diffraction studies of the surface showed that the SiC had dissolved, and that martensite, was the main phase influencing the hardness

    Accounts of severe acute obstetric complications in Rural Bangladesh

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>As maternal deaths have decreased worldwide, increasing attention has been placed on the study of severe obstetric complications, such as hemorrhage, eclampsia, and obstructed labor, to identify where improvements can be made in maternal health. Though access to medical care is considered to be life-saving during obstetric emergencies, data on the factors associated with health care decision-making during obstetric emergencies are lacking. We aim to describe the health care decision-making process during severe acute obstetric complications among women and their families in rural Bangladesh.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using the pregnancy surveillance infrastructure from a large community trial in northwest rural Bangladesh, we nested a qualitative study to document barriers to timely receipt of medical care for severe obstetric complications. We conducted 40 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with women reporting severe acute obstetric complications and purposively selected for conditions representing the top five most common obstetric complications. The interviews were transcribed and coded to highlight common themes and to develop an overall conceptual model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Women attributed their life-threatening experiences to societal and socioeconomic factors that led to delays in seeking timely medical care by decision makers, usually husbands or other male relatives. Despite the dominance of male relatives and husbands in the decision-making process, women who underwent induced abortions made their own decisions about their health care and relied on female relatives for advice. The study shows that non-certified providers such as village doctors and untrained birth attendants were the first-line providers for women in all categories of severe complications. Coordination of transportation and finances was often arranged through mobile phones, and referrals were likely to be provided by village doctors.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Strategies to increase timely and appropriate care seeking for severe obstetric complications may consider targeting of non-certified providers for strengthening of referral linkages between patients and certified facility-based providers. Future research may characterize the treatments and appropriateness of emergency care provided by ubiquitous village doctors and other non-certified treatment providers in rural South Asian settings. In addition, future studies may explore the use of mobile phones in decreasing delays to certified medical care during obstetric emergencies.</p

    Why small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements should be integrated into comprehensive strategies to prevent child undernutrition in nutritionally vulnerable populations : response to Gupta et al.’s commentary

    We write in response to the commentary by Gupta et al. (2023) on small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) for infants and young children 6 to 24 months of age, which was prompted by the recent brief guidance note from UNICEF (2023) explaining when, why and how SQ-LNS are being prioritized as part of their package of preventive actions to combat early childhood malnutrition. The UNICEF document was disseminated shortly after publication of a correspondence in Nature Food (Aguayo et al. 2023), authored by nutrition leaders from several organizations, that summarized the evidence on the benefits of SQ-LNS and called for this intervention to be scaled up and integrated into programs for populations in which child undernutrition is prevalent and dietary quality is very poor. We agree with Gupta et al. that child malnutrition is the result of many factors and there is no single “quick fix” or “magic bullet”. In fact, the above-cited documents state clearly and frequently that provision of SQ-LNS is not a stand-alone intervention and must be integrated into comprehensive strategies to improve infant and young child feeding (IYCF), including the promotion of dietary diversity, as well as other actions needed to prevent malnutrition. SQ-LNS are intended for vulnerable populations who lack access to an affordable, nutritionally adequate complementary feeding diet and have high rates of stunting, wasting and mortality. In such populations, we agree with Gupta et al. that IYCF messages alone are not enough. This is precisely why SQ-LNS were originally developed

    NLRP3 inflammasome blockade reduces liver inflammation and fibrosis in experimental NASH in mice

    Background & Aims NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation occurs in Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We used the first small molecule NLRP3 inhibitor, MCC950, to test whether inflammasome blockade alters inflammatory recruitment and liver fibrosis in two murine models of steatohepatitis. Methods We fed foz/foz and wild-type mice an atherogenic diet for 16\ua0weeks, gavaged MCC950 or vehicle until 24\ua0weeks, then determined NAFLD phenotype. In mice fed an methionine/choline deficient (MCD) diet, we gavaged MCC950 or vehicle for 6\ua0weeks and determined the effects on liver fibrosis. Results In vehicle-treated foz/foz mice, hepatic expression of NLRP3, pro-IL-1β, active caspase-1 and IL-1β increased at 24\ua0weeks, in association with cholesterol crystal formation and NASH pathology; plasma IL-1β, IL-6, MCP-1, ALT/AST all increased. MCC950 treatment normalized hepatic caspase 1 and IL-1β expression, plasma IL-1β, MCP-1 and IL-6, lowered ALT/AST, and reduced the severity of liver inflammation including designation as NASH pathology, and liver fibrosis. In vitro, cholesterol crystals activated Kupffer cells and macrophages to release IL-1β; MCC950 abolished this, and the associated neutrophil migration. MCD diet-fed mice developed fibrotic steatohepatitis; MCC950 suppressed the increase in hepatic caspase 1 and IL-1β, lowered numbers of macrophages and neutrophils in the liver, and improved liver fibrosis. Conclusion MCC950, an NLRP3 selective inhibitor, improved NAFLD pathology and fibrosis in obese diabetic mice. This is potentially attributable to the blockade of cholesterol crystal-mediated NLRP3 activation in myeloid cells. MCC950 reduced liver fibrosis in MCD-fed mice. Targeting NLRP3 is a logical direction in pharmacotherapy of NASH. Lay summary Fatty liver disease caused by being overweight with diabetes and a high risk of heart attack, termed non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is the most common serious liver disease with no current treatment. There could be several causes of inflammation in NASH, but activation of a protein scaffold within cells termed the inflammasome (NLRP3) has been suggested to play a role. Here we show that cholesterol crystals could be one pathway to activate the inflammasome in NASH. We used a drug called MCC950, which has already been shown to block NLRP3 activation, in an attempt to reduce liver injury in NASH. This drug partly reversed liver inflammation, particularly in obese diabetic mice that most closely resembles the human context of NASH. In addition, such dampening of liver inflammation in NASH achieved with MCC950 partly reversed liver scarring, the process that links NASH to the development of cirrhosis

    Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents’ growth and development

    Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified
