    Four dimensional R^4 superinvariants through gauge completion

    We fully compute the N=1 supersymmetrization of the fourth power of the Weyl tensor in d=4 x-space with the auxiliary fields. In a previous paper, we showed that their elimination requires an infinite number of terms; we explicitely compute those terms to order \kappa^4 (three loop). We also write, in superspace notation, all the possible N=1 actions, in four dimensions, that contain pure R^4 terms (with coupling constants). We explicitely write these actions in terms of the \theta components of the chiral density \epsilon and the supergravity superfields R, G_m, W_{ABC}. Using the method of gauge completion, we compute the necessary \theta components which allow us to write these actions in x-space. We discuss under which circumstances can these extra R^4 correction terms be reabsorbed in the pure supergravity action, and their relevance to the quantum supergravity/string theory effective actions.Comment: 20 pages, no figures.     Output functions and fractal dimensions in dynamical systems

    We present a novel method for the calculation of the fractal dimension of boundaries in dynamical systems, which is in many cases many orders of magnitude more efficient than the uncertainty method. We call it the Output Function Evaluation (OFE) method. The OFE method is based on an efficient scheme for computing output functions, such as the escape time, on a one-dimensional portion of the phase space. We show analytically that the OFE method is much more efficient than the uncertainty method for boundaries with D<0.5D<0.5, where DD is the dimension of the intersection of the boundary with a one-dimensional manifold. We apply the OFE method to a scattering system, and compare it to the uncertainty method. We use the OFE method to study the behavior of the fractal dimension as the system's dynamics undergoes a topological transition.Comment: Uses REVTEX; to be published in Phys. Rev. Let

    The Vampire and the FOOL

    This paper presents new features recently implemented in the theorem prover Vampire, namely support for first-order logic with a first class boolean sort (FOOL) and polymorphic arrays. In addition to having a first class boolean sort, FOOL also contains if-then-else and let-in expressions. We argue that presented extensions facilitate reasoning-based program analysis, both by increasing the expressivity of first-order reasoners and by gains in efficiency

    On multigraded generalizations of Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules

    We study the category of Z^l-graded modules with finite-dimensional graded pieces for certain Z+^l-graded Lie algebras. We also consider certain Serre subcategories with finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects. We construct projective resolutions for the simple modules in these categories and compute the Ext groups between simple modules. We show that the projective covers of the simple modules in these Serre subcategories can be regarded as multigraded generalizations of Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules and give a recursive formula for computing their graded characters

    The Social Subsystem of Customer Teams in ERP Implementation: A Repertory Grid of Personal Constructs of Brazilian IT Professionals

    The METRICS framework emerged in 2006 to help manage the social subsystem of customer teams (CuTes) as they engage with external technology and business teams (XTeams) in ERP projects. The framework was first validated in a landmark ERP implementation in Southern Brazil. Our research contributes to the validation and application of METRICS by reporting a study developed in 2011 in a different geographical, cultural and economic region: the Brazilian Northeast. Data collection was based on personal constructs theory and the repertory grid technique – both not included in the first METRICS validation. With 68 out of 88 measures verified empirically, 77.3% of the framework was supported by key ERP informants in the Northeast, what suggests the general validity of the framework across time, regions and empirical methods

    Four-vortex motion around a circular cylinder

    The motion of two pairs of counter-rotating point vortices placed in a uniform flow past a circular cylinder is studied analytically and numerically. When the dynamics is restricted to the symmetric subspace---a case that can be realized experimentally by placing a splitter plate in the center plane---, it is found that there is a family of linearly stable equilibria for same-signed vortex pairs. The nonlinear dynamics in the symmetric subspace is investigated and several types of orbits are presented. The analysis reported here provides new insights and reveals novel features of this four-vortex system, such as the fact that there is no equilibrium for two pairs of vortices of opposite signs on the opposite sides of the cylinder. (It is argued that such equilibria might exist for vortex flows past a cylinder confined in a channel.) In addition, a new family of opposite-signed equilibria on the normal line is reported. The stability analysis for antisymmetric perturbations is also carried out and it shows that all equilibria are unstable in this case.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Physics of Fluid

    Differential mesenteric fat deposition in bovines fed on silage or concentrate is independent of glycerol membrane permeability

    © The Animal Consortium 2011In the meat industry, the manipulation of fat deposition in cattle is of pivotal importance to improve production efficiency, carcass composition and ultimately meat quality. There is an increasing interest in the identification of key factors and molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of specific fat depots. This study aimed at elucidating the influence of breed and diet on adipose tissue membrane permeability and fluidity and their interplay on fat deposition in bovines. Two Portuguese autochthonous breeds, Alentejana and Barrosã, recognized as late- and early-maturing breeds, respectively, were chosen to examine the effects of breed and diet on fat deposition and on adipose membrane composition and permeability. Twenty-four male bovines from these breeds were fed on silage-based or concentrate-based diets for 11 months. Animals were slaughtered to determine their live slaughter and hot carcass weights, as well as weights of subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. Mesenteric fat depots were excised and used to isolate adipocyte membrane vesicles where cholesterol content, fatty acid profile as well as permeability and fluidity were determined. Total accumulation of neither subcutaneous nor visceral fat was influenced by breed. In contrast, mesenteric and omental fat depots weights were higher in concentrate-fed bulls relative to silage-fed animals. Membrane fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol in mesenteric adipose tissue were found to be independent of breed and diet. Moreover, the deposition of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids, which may influence membrane properties, were unchanged among experimental groups. Adipose membrane lipids from the mesenteric fat depot of ruminants were rich in saturated fatty acids, and unaffected by polyunsaturated fatty acids dietary levels. Our results provide evidence against the involvement of cellular membrane permeability to glycerol on fat accumulation in mesenteric fat tissue of concentrate-fed bovines, which is consistent with the unchanged membrane lipid profile found among experimental groups.This study was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through grant PTDC/CVT/2006/66114 and individual fellowships to Ana P.
