    Agricultural commercialisation through innovation platforms: a case for goat production

    Empirical evidence has shown that goats are of significance in marginalised, poor, and rural economies and this information has been well documented in scholarly research. Despite its importance and potential contribution, goat farming remains underutilised and undeveloped in the rural economy - particularly in South Africa. Developmental intervention has focused on improving productivity with minimal effort aimed at the integration of key role players in the value chain, and even less emphasis on improving farmers' attitudes. The largest goat population in South Africa is found in the Northern Cape where there is great potential to be realised for goat farming. The main objective of this study was to identify supply side (production) factors constraining subsistence goat production in South Africa, with the view of identifying key actors to establish an innovation platform through vertical integration. By transforming the subsistence farming orientation of goat farmers into a commercial (market) orientation, the welfare of communities can be improved through the commercialisation of smallscale goat farmers. Studies highlight the need to enhance goat production beyond subsistence goat rearing and towards commercialisation through access to markets, veterinary services, credit facilities, and government support. Furthermore, a focus on market development, value chain integration and innovation platforms can improve the efficiency of the goat farming sector. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on goat farming in South Africa and offers an innovation platform to foster partnerships among the actors along the value chain, creating an enabling environment for the easy flow of market information and infrastructure development. A praxis model is incorporated into this research. This takes the form of a business model and is provided in Appendix B as a practical way of applying the knowledge gathered in this research

    Genomics of entomopathogenic bacterial endosymbiont species associated with desiccation tolerant entomopathogenic nematode

Year: 2016.Entomopathogenic nematodes in the genera Heterorhabditis and Steinernema have emerged excellent as non-chemical alternatives for control of insect pest population. They have a specific mutualistic symbioses with bacterial symbionts in the genera Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus, respectively. Native EPN species that are able to tolerate environmental stress including desiccation are of great interest for application. The aim of this study was to isolate indigenous EPN species from soil samples collected from Brits, North West province in South Africa, and to investigate their ability to tolerate desiccation stress. The second aim was to isolate the bacterial symbiont and sequence, assemble and annotate its whole genomic DNA. Insect baiting technique and White trap method proved useful in the recovery of nematodes from collected soil samples and infected cadaver, respectively. Molecular identification based on the amplification of the 18S rDNA and phylogenetic relationships revealed high affinity of the unknown EPN isolate 10 to Steinernema species and due to variation in evolutionary divergence distance, the unknown isolate was identified as Steinernema spp. isolate 10 . Isolates 35 and 42 revealed high similarity to Heterorhabditis zealandica strain Bartow (accession number: GU174009.1), Heterorhabditis zealandica strain NZH3 (accession number: EF530041.1) and the South African isolate Heterorhabditis zealandica strain SF41 (EU699436.1). Both Steinernema spp. isolate 10 and Heterorhabditis species could tolerate desiccation. Steinernema spp. isolate 10 was tolerant up to 11 days of desiccation exposure in loamy sand and up to 9 days of exposure in river sand, causing 26, 6% and 13, 4% cumulative larval mortality after 96 hours, post resuscitation by rehydration, respectively. Heterorhabditis spp. could tolerate desiccation up to 13 days of exposure and induced 26.6% cumulative larval mortality on both loamy and river sand after 96 hours post resuscitation. Swarming, aggregation, coiling and clumping behavioural characteristics were observed when Steinernema spp. isolate 10 was exposed to desiccation and Heterorhabditis species displayed no similar behavioural characteristics associated with desiccation tolerance. Morphological characteristics of the unknown Steinernema spp. isolate 10 have been described, and the thick cuticle and sheath which are both associated with tolerance to desiccation stress have been noted. The bacterial symbiont was isolated from larval hosts infected with Steinernema spp. isolate 10 and molecular identification through NCBI Blastn based on the 16S rDNA revealed high affinity to Xenorhabdus bacterial species. Phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary divergence estimates 16 revealed genetic variation and the species was identified as Xenorhabdus bacterial isolate. The genome assembly of Xenorhabdus bacterial isolate using CLC Bio revealed a total length of 4, 183, 779 bp with 231 contigs (>=400bp), GC content of 44.7% and N50 of 57,901 bp. Annotation of the assembled genome through NCBI PGAAP annotation pipeline revealed 3,950 genes (3,601 protein coding sequences (CDS) and 266 pseudogenes), 12 rRNAs and 70 tRNAs. RAST annotation revealed 55 of virulence, disease and defense subsystem features which are involved in the pathogenicity of Xenorhabdus bacterial isolate. The ability of EPNs to tolerate environmental stress is highly crucial and one of the determining factors for biocontrol potential and successful application, thus the indigenous desiccation tolerant EPN isolate, Steinernema spp. isolate 10 holds great potential as a biological control agent. The genome sequencing and annotation reveals insight to behavioural and physiological attributes of bacterial symbionts and this study will contribute to the understanding of pathogenicity and evolution of the bacteria–nematode complex.GR 201

    Biofuels and rural development: A case study of the Mapfura-Makhura Incubator and small-scale farmers in the Limpopo Province

    The primary objective of the study is to examine the livelihood impact of biofuel production on small-scale rural farmers participating in the MMI project in the local districts in Limpopo province. The study is theoretically underpinned by the sustainable livelihoods framework which provides a nuanced analysis of the complex nature of poverty and livelihoods. The framework was used to examine how MMI as a structure with its own processes (incubator model) plays a role in creating a means for farmers to have more access to livelihood assets which would help them achieve improved livelihoods outcome. The findings of this study reflect what has already been articulated in literature about small-scale biofuel projects. This study shows that MMI’s incubator plays an important role for 73% of the farmers to access all of the livelihood assets and ultimately improving their farm income and food security. Furthermore, 90% of the participants admitted to have received support from MMI in a number of ways. This includes the provision of farming inputs, labour and access to markets in addition to training, mentoring and coaching. The study also found that despite the overwhelming support, both MMI and farmers face a number of challenges. Farmers still lack adequate farming inputs, transport, access to markets and vulnerability to natural disasters. MMI faces challenges in raising funds to provide inputs to all their incubatees and lack of adequate mechanization. Lack of transportation affects both farmers and MMI in that farmers find it difficult to access MMI service. In the same light, MMI has found it difficult to reach farmers for post-incubation, coaching and mentoring or delivering inputs; this can be challenging and a costly process. MMI’s biofuel production project has the capability for improving rural livelihoods through agriculture. The study concludes by recommending that MMI should improve its own capacity in order for them to better the lives of the farmers they assist. This study is significant for contributing to a field which has received less academic and research attention in South Africa. The framework emphasizes the importance of interventions to address the social determinants of health as well, alongside healthcare services. Although the framework is useful for visualizing service organization, it has not been adequately integrated into policy and practice in South Africa. In addition, there is currently no comprehensive approach to monitor and evaluate service provision along the continuum of care. The current approach is fragmented across programs and sectors and focuses on only a handful of indicators. This research explores an approach for measurement and monitoring of a comprehensive continuum of care for maternal health in South Africa, with implications for application in other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)

    Improving the validity, relevance and feasibility of the continuum of care framework for maternal health in South Africa: a thematic analysis of experts’ perspectives

    Background: The continuum of care is a key strategy for ensuring comprehensive service delivery for maternal health, while acknowledging the role of the social determinants of health. However, there is little research on the operationalisation of the framework by decision-makers and implementers to address maternal health challenges. The framework should be measurable and feasible for implementation in low- and middle-income country contexts. In this study, we explore experts’ perspective on monitoring indicators for continuum of care and key issues related to their use in the South African context. Methods: We conducted key informant interviews with a range of experts in decision-making and programme implementation roles in the health system and relevant sectors. Key informants provided their perspectives on systematically selected, nationally representative monitoring indicators in terms of validity, relevance and feasibility. We interviewed 13 key informants and conducted a thematic analysis of their responses using multi-stage coding techniques in Atlas.ti 8.4. Results: Experts believed that the continuum of care framework and monitoring indicators offer a multisectoral perspective for maternal health intervention missing in current programmes. To improve validity of monitoring indicators, experts suggested reflection on the use of proxy indicators and improvement of data to allow for equity analysis. In terms of relevance and feasibility, experts believe there was potential to foster co-accountability using continuum of care indicators. However, as experts stated, new indicators should be integrated that directly measure intersectoral collaboration for maternal health. In addition, experts recommended that the framework and indicators should evolve over time to reflect evolving policy priorities and public health challenges. Conclusion: Experts, as decision-makers and implementers, helped identify key issues in the application of the continuum of care framework and its indicators. The use of local indicators can bring the continuum of care framework from an under-utilised strategy to a useful tool for action and decision-making in maternal health. Our findings point to measurement issues and systematic changes needed to improve comprehensive monitoring of maternal health interventions in South Africa. Our methods can be applied to other low- and middle-income countries using the continuum of care framework and locally available indicators

    Measurement approaches in continuum of care for maternal health: a critical interpretive synthesis of evidence from LMICs and its implications for the South African context

    Background: Global strategies recommend a continuum of care for maternal health to improve outcomes and access to care in low and middle income countries (LMICs). South Africa has already set priority interventions along the continuum of care for maternal health, and mandated their implementation at the district health level. However, the approach for monitoring access to this continuum of care has not yet been defined. This review assessed measurement approaches in continuum of care for maternal health among LMICs and their implications for the South African context. Methods: We conducted a critical interpretive synthesis of quantitative and qualitative research sourced from Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), MEDLINE (Pubmed), Cambridge Journals Online, Credo Reference and Science Direct. We selected 20 out of 118 articles into the analysis, following a rigorous quality appraisal and relevance assessment. The outcomes of the synthesis were new constructs for the measurement of continuum of care for maternal health, derived from the existing knowledge gaps. Results: We learned that coverage was the main approach for measuring and monitoring the continuum of care for maternal health in LMICs. The measure of effective coverage was also used to integrate quality into coverage of care. Like coverage, there was no uniform definition of effective coverage, and we observed gaps in the measurement of multiple dimensions of quality. From the evidence, we derived a new construct called adequacy that incorporated timeliness of care, coverage, and the complex nature of quality. We described the implications of adequacy to the measurement of the continuum of care for maternal health in South Africa. Conclusions: Critical interpretive synthesis allowed new understandings of measurement of the continuum of care for maternal health in South Africa. The new construct of adequacy can be the basis of a new measure of access to the continuum of care for maternal health. Although adequacy conceptualizes a more holistic approach, more research is needed to derive its indicators and metrics using South African data sources

    Dental Therapists and Oral Hygienists receive training in dental trauma in their curriculum. When they are in their workspace however, many are not confident enough to provide treatment for patients presenting with dental trauma in the oral health setting. As members of the dental team they play an important role in the management of patients who present with traumatic dental injuries. It is therefore important that guidelines are developed for them to understand the role they need to play when providing oral health treatment. The chapter will focus on the etiology of dental trauma to assist the oral health clinicians to prepare for a diagnosis. The classification of traumatic dental injuries will be explained. This will lead to the description of the classified injuries and their management. Clear guidelines and management for the patients will thereafter be provided. The prevention of traumatic dental injuries will also be discussed so that the treatment provided to the patients is improved

    Review of health and non-health sector indicators for monitoring service provision along the continuum of care for maternal health

    This study uses health and non-health sector data sources to select and assess available indicators for service provision along the continuum of care for maternal health at subnational levels in South Africa. It applies the adequacy approach established in another study to assess the multi-dimensionality of available indicators. Using adequacy and the process of assessment in the study, the comprehensiveness of the continuum of care for improving maternal health outcomes can be assessed.We found 27 indicators of care utilization and access, linkages of care, and quality of care from the routine district health information system. The General Household Survey contained 11 indicators for the social determinants of health on the continuum of care framework. Indicator gaps include health promotion during and after pregnancy, maternal nutrition, empowerment and quality of care. At present, the available indicators measure about 74% of the interventions on the continuum of care framework. We make recommendations regarding improvements needed to better measure and monitor the continuum of care for maternal health. These involve actions within the health system and include integration of non-health system indicators

    Using an intersectionality approach to transform health services for overlooked healthcare users and workers after Covid-19

    Globally, government responses to the covid-19 pandemic reinforced prevailing patterns of privilege and prejudice and further entrenched the inequitable distribution of health and disease in different populations.1-3 These patterns reflect how the legacies of historical discrimination combine with existing power structures to shape, condone, and continue social disadvantage and the unequal distribution of resources. Analysis of these inequalities within health systems from the perspective of intersectionality can help us understand their drivers and find solutions to reduce them. Tackling these inequalities can also help transform health services for improved pandemic preparedness.

    CO2 storage potential of basaltic rocks, Mpumalanga: Implications for the Just Transition

    South Africa is the largest CO2 emitter on the African continent. These emissions stem from a heavy reliance on coal as the primary energy fuel and contributor toward socio-economic development. The South African government has targeted reducing CO2 emissions by more than half in the next 10 years. To meet climate change mitigation scenarios, while alleviating continued emissions, South Africa will look to technologies such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage. Initial assessments of South Africa’s potential for CO2 storage have focused on deep saline aquifers within volcano-sedimentary sequences along the near and offshore regions. Sustaining the Just Transition will, however, require additional storage capacity. In this study, we make an initial assessment of possible CO2 storage in basaltic sequences of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. Geological and mineralogical information was ascertained from borehole data. The geological information suggests that the subsurface extent of the Ventersdorp Supergroup is at least 80 000 km2 larger than previously mapped, extending beneath major point-source CO2 emitters and active coalfields. Furthermore, petrographic analyses suggest pore space of up to ca 15% with minimal alteration, and preservation of mafic silicate minerals that would enable reactive carbonation of injected CO2. Notable metasomatic and hydrothermal alteration is confined to significant contact horizons, such as the lowermost Ventersdorp Contact Reef. These results suggest that basaltic sequences may exponentially increase South Africa’s CO2 sequestration storage capacity and may have a significant impact on the country’s Just Transition. Significance:This study shows that basaltic sequences may support the permanent storage of anthropogenic CO2 in South Africa, in particular, proximal to significant point-source CO2 emitters. South Africa has voluminous and widespread basaltic sequences, which, in combination, increase South Africa’s geological CO2 storage potential by several orders of magnitude. These storage reservoirs can have a direct impact in South Africa by enabling a sustainable Just Transition toward a low-carbon economy while meeting intended climate change mitigation scenarios
