Inductive benchmarking for purely functional data structures
Every designer of a new data structure wants to know how well it performs in comparison with others. But finding, coding and testing applications as benchmarks can be tedious and time-consuming. Besides, how a benchmark uses a data structure may considerably affect its apparent efficiency, so the choice of applications may bias the results. We address these problems by developing a tool for inductive benchmarking. This tool, Auburn, can generate benchmarks across a wide distribution of uses. We precisely define 'the use of a data structure', upon which we build the core algorithms of Auburn: how to generate a benchmark from a description of use, and how to extract a description of use from an application. We then apply inductive classification techniques to obtain decision trees for the choice between competing data structures. We test Auburn by benchmarking several implementations of three common data structures: queues, random-access lists and heaps. These and other results show Auburn to be a useful and accurate tool, but they also reveal some limitations of the approach

“Waiting for Godot”- Restructuring on Small Family Farms
This paper examines the extent to which favourable off-farm labour market conditions coupled with growth in land values have contributed to the observed resilience of small scale family farms. We use data from Northern Ireland and employ farm household optimisation models to analyse household decision making processes that contribute to the observed inertia in farm structure. The analysis indicates that farm household behaviour is influenced not just by current farm income, but also expected capital asset returns. Increased wealth, associated with continuing land ownership, gives rise to the proposition that the link between off-farm incomes, increased land values and remaining in farming may be associated with farmers pursuing wealth maximizing objectives, whilst still maintaining a rural way of life. Alongside increased wealth through land ownership the farm household model quantifies the importance of off-farm income removing the pressure from farming income to fund all family consumption needs. This enables households to sustain low-income farming activities in order to pursue other objectives such as wealth management (including tax efficient transfer of wealth) and lifestyle. Consequently, the results indicate that the survival of small-scale family farms may be much less sensitive to agricultural support policies than has been commonly suggested. In an extension that explores the effects of the recent economic turbulence due to the ‘credit crunch’ we find that the households remain resilient even when subjected to a protracted period of reduced off-farm employment.Farm households, resilience, wealth accumulation, off-farm income, Consumer/Household Economics, Productivity Analysis, C61, Q12,
Gravitational quasinormal modes for Anti-de Sitter black holes
Quasinormal mode spectra for gravitational perturbations of black holes in
four dimensional de Sitter and anti-de Sitter space are investigated. The
anti-de Sitter case is relevant to the ADS-CFT correspondence in superstring
theory. The ADS-CFT correspondence suggests a prefered set of boundary

One loop effective potential in heterotic M-theory
We have calculated the one loop effective potential of the vector multiplets
arising from the compactification to five dimensions of heterotic M-theory on a
Calabi-Yau manifold with h^{1,1}>1. We find that extensive cancellations
between the fermionic and bosonic sectors of the theory cause the effective
potential to vanish, with the exception of a higher order curvature term of the
type which might arise from string corrections.Comment: Latex, 28 pages, 1 figur
Testing models of inflation with CMB non-gaussianity
Two different predictions for the primordial curvature fluctuation bispectrum
are compared through their effects on the Cosmic Microwave Background
temperature fluctuations. The first has a local form described by a single
parameter f_{NL}. The second is based on a prediction from the warm
inflationary scenario, with a different dependence on wavenumber and a
parameter f_{WI}. New expressions are obtained for the angular bispectra of the
temperature fluctuations and for the estimators used to determine and
f_{WI}. The standard deviation of the estimators in an ideal experiment is
roughly 5 times larger for f_{WI} than for f_{NL}. Using 3 year WMAP data gives
limits -375<f_{WI}<36.8, but there is a possibility of detecting a signal for

Neutrino Dark Energy and Moduli Stabilization in a BPS Braneworld Scenario
A braneworld model for neutrino Dark Energy (DE) is presented. We consider a
five dimensional two-branes set up with a bulk scalar field motivated by
supergravity. Its low-energy effective theory is derived with a moduli space
approximation (MSA). The position of the two branes are parametrized by two
scalar degrees of freedom (moduli). After detuning the brane tensions a
classical potential for the moduli is generated. This potential is unstable for
dS branes and we suggest to consider as a stabilizing contribution the Casimir
energy of bulk fields. In particular we add a massive spinor (neutrino) field
in the bulk and then evaluate the Casimir contribution of the bulk neutrino
with the help of zeta function regularization techniques. We construct an
explicit form of the 4D neutrino mass as function of the two moduli. To recover
the correct DE scale for the moduli potential the usual cosmological constant
fine-tuning is necessary, but, once accepted, this model suggests a stronger
connection between DE and neutrino physics.Comment: 26 pages, 1 EPS figur
Annexin A2 at the Interface of Actin and Membrane Dynamics: A Focus on Its Roles in Endocytosis and Cell Polarization
Annexins are a family of calcium- and phospholipid-binding proteins found in nearly all eukaryotes. They are structurally highly conserved and have been implicated in a wide range of cellular activities. In this paper, we focus on Annexin A2 (AnxA2). Altered expression of this protein has been identified in a wide variety of cancers, has also been found on the HIV particle, and has been implicated in the maturation of the virus. Recently, it has also been shown to have an important role in the establishment of normal apical polarity in epithelial cells. We synthesize here the known biochemical properties of this protein and the extensive literature concerning its involvement in the endocytic pathway. We stress the importance of AnxA2 as a platform for actin remodeling in the vicinity of dynamic cellular membranes, in the hope that this may shed light on the normal functions of the protein and its contribution to disease
Extending Immunity for Drug Overdoses
The Tennessee Code 63-1-156 provides immunity to those who suffer from a drug overdose that seek medical assistance, only for the first overdose. After the first overdose, individuals who seek medical assistance do not receive immunity and are subject to criminal charges. Over the past 5 years, drug overdose deaths have increased significantly and in 2021 3,814 Tennesseans died from a drug overdose. In addition, individuals incarcerated for drug-related offenses make up about 20% of the state’s prison population. The state of Tennessee has had a significant increase in drug abuse rates, leading to a rise in overdose deaths and incarceration rates. HB0075 and SB0256, sponsored by Representative William Lamberth and Senator Jack Johnson, extend criminal immunity for those suffering from drug overdose and seeking medical assistance, whether the first or any overdose. This legislation recognizes data indicating that people who have overdosed once are more likely to overdose again (CDC, 2022). These bills recognize the importance of providing individuals with the necessary protection to seek medical assistance without fear of legal repercussions for every overdose. By shifting the focus from criminalizing drug use to providing immunity and assistance for every overdose, HB0075 and SB0256 align with the NASW values social justice and dignity and worth of the person. The bills aim to protect individuals\u27 dignity by providing immunity to those who seek medical assistance for an overdose, and they promote social justice by recognizing drug use as a public health issue and providing support and assistance to individuals who suffer from drug overdose. This paper will explore these bills and their potential to have a positive impact on the social welfare issue of drug use
