High accuracy results for the energy levels of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, up to J=2
We present a nonrelativistic calculation of the rotation-vibration levels of
the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+, relying on the diagonalization of the
exact three-body Hamiltonian. The J=2 levels are obtained with a very high
accuracy of 10^{-14} a.u. (for most levels) representing an improvement by five
orders of magnitude over previous calculations. The accuracy is also improved
for the J=1 levels of H2+ and D2+ with respect to earlier works. Moreover, we
have computed the sensitivities of the energy levels with respect to the mass
ratios, allowing these levels to be used for metrological purposes.Comment: 11 page
Investigation of the stall-induced shock wave (hammershock) at the inlet to the engine
The peak static pressures measured at the inlet to the engine during stall are presented for a turbojet and two turbofan engines. It is shown for one turbofan and the turbojet that the static pressure ratio across the hammershock does not exceed significantly the normal shock pressure ratio necessary to stop the flow. The second turbofan engine did not follow this rule. Possible reasons for the departure are discussed. For the two turbofan engines the influence of the stall method on the hammershock intensity was investigated. Data related to the spatial distribution of pressure in the hammershock are also presented
Cosmological Constraints on Dissipative Models of Inflation
(Abridged) We study dissipative inflation in the regime where the dissipative
term takes a specific form, \Gamma=\Gamma(\phi), analyzing two models in the
weak and strong dissipative regimes with a SUSY breaking potential. After
developing intuition about the predictions from these models through analytic
approximations, we compute the predicted cosmological observables through full
numerical evolution of the equations of motion, relating the mass scale and
scale of dissipation to the characteristic amplitude and shape of the
primordial power spectrum. We then use Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques to
constrain a subset of the models with cosmological data from the cosmic
microwave background (WMAP three-year data) and large scale structure (SDSS
Luminous Red Galaxy power spectrum). We find that the posterior distributions
of the dissipative parameters are highly non-Gaussian and their allowed ranges
agree well with the expectations obtained using analytic approximations. In the
weak regime, only the mass scale is tightly constrained; conversely, in the
strong regime, only the dissipative coefficient is tightly constrained. A lower
limit is seen on the inflation scale: a sub-Planckian inflaton is disfavoured
by the data. In both weak and strong regimes, we reconstruct the limits on the
primordial power spectrum and show that these models prefer a {\it red}
spectrum, with no significant running of the index. We calculate the reheat
temperature and show that the gravitino problem can be overcome with large
dissipation, which in turn leads to large levels of non-Gaussianity: if
dissipative inflation is to evade the gravitino problem, the predicted level of

Enhanced Pauli blocking of light scattering in a trapped Fermi gas
Pauli blocking of spontaneous emission by a single excited-state atom has
been predicted to be dramatic at low temperature when the Fermi energy
exceeds the recoil energy . The photon scattering
rate of a ground-state Fermi gas can also be suppressed by occupation of the
final states accessible to a recoiling atom, however suppression is diminished
by scattering events near the Fermi edge. We analyze two new approaches to
improve the visibility of Pauli blocking in a trapped Fermi gas. Focusing the
incident light to excite preferentially the high-density region of the cloud
can increase the blocking signature by 14%, and is most effective at
intermediate temperature. Spontaneous Raman scattering between imbalanced
internal states can be strongly suppressed at low temperature, and is
completely blocked for a final-state in the

The etiology and prevention of feeding intolerance paralytic ileus – revisiting an old concept
Gastro-intestinal (G-I) motility is impaired ("paralytic ileus") after abdominal surgery. Premature feeding attempts delay recovery by inducing "feeding intolerance," especially abdominal distention that compromises respiration. Controlled studies (e.g., from Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital) have lead to recommendations that patients not be fed soon after major abdominal surgery to avoid this complication
Noise induced oscillations in non-equilibrium steady state systems
We consider effect of stochastic sources upon self-organization process being
initiated with creation of the limit cycle. General expressions obtained are
applied to the stochastic Lorenz system to show that departure from equilibrium
steady state can destroy the limit cycle at certain relation between
characteristic scales of temporal variation of principle variables. Noise
induced resonance related to the limit cycle is found to appear if the fastest
variations displays a principle variable, which is coupled with two different

Physics of brain dynamics: Fokker-Planck analysis reveals changes in EEG delta-theta interactions in anaesthesia
We use drift and diffusion coefficients to reveal interactions between different oscillatory processes underlying a complex signal and apply the method to EEG delta and theta frequencies in the brain. By analysis of data recorded from rats during anaesthesia, we consider the stability and basins of attraction of fixed points in the phase portrait of the deterministic part of the retrieved stochastic process. We show that different classes of dynamics are associated with deep and light anaesthesia, and we demonstrate that the predominant directionality of the interaction is such that theta drives delt
Precision cosmology defeats void models for acceleration
The suggestion that we occupy a privileged position near the centre of a
large, nonlinear, and nearly spherical void has recently attracted much
attention as an alternative to dark energy. Putting aside the philosophical
problems with this scenario, we perform the most complete and up-to-date
comparison with cosmological data. We use supernovae and the full cosmic
microwave background spectrum as the basis of our analysis. We also include
constraints from radial baryonic acoustic oscillations, the local Hubble rate,
age, big bang nucleosynthesis, the Compton y-distortion, and for the first time
include the local amplitude of matter fluctuations, \sigma_8. These all paint a
consistent picture in which voids are in severe tension with the data. In
particular, void models predict a very low local Hubble rate, suffer from an

"Be active!" Revisiting the South African Food Based Dietary Guidelines for activity
The objective of this paper was to review current evidence on physical activity for health in order to support the foodbased dietary guideline (FBDG) “Be active!”. Physical activity, defined as at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per day for adults, and 60 minutes for children and adolescents, is advised in the FBDG because of the role it plays in maintaining energy balance, improving body composition and promoting general health and wellbeing. The reviewed outcome measures are changes in physical activity patterns and the reported prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in South Africa. Despite the previous set of FBDGs, no improvements in physical activity, obesity or NCDs have been reported in South Africa. Recent literature emphasises the beneficial effects of physical activity on the reduction of risk factors associated with the prevalence of NCDs. Physical activity has a positive effect on appetite and weight control, insulin sensitivity, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, stress relief and burnout. Barriers that prevent children and adults from participating in regular physical activity have been identified, and recommendations how to overcome these have been made. It has been concluded that South Africans are not sufficiently physically active for their general health status to be improved. It is recommended that methods to promote physical activity at national, provincial, district and local level need to be developed, implemented and sustained
