Using deep learning to understand and mitigate the qubit noise environment
Understanding the spectrum of noise acting on a qubit can yield valuable
information about its environment, and crucially underpins the optimization of
dynamical decoupling protocols that can mitigate such noise. However,
extracting accurate noise spectra from typical time-dynamics measurements on
qubits is intractable using standard methods. Here, we propose to address this
challenge using deep learning algorithms, leveraging the remarkable progress
made in the field of image recognition, natural language processing, and more
recently, structured data. We demonstrate a neural network based methodology
that allows for extraction of the noise spectrum associated with any qubit
surrounded by an arbitrary bath, with significantly greater accuracy than the
current methods of choice. The technique requires only a two-pulse echo decay
curve as input data and can further be extended either for constructing
customized optimal dynamical decoupling protocols or for obtaining critical
qubit attributes such as its proximity to the sample surface. Our results can
be applied to a wide range of qubit platforms, and provide a framework for
improving qubit performance with applications not only in quantum computing and
nanoscale sensing but also in material characterization techniques such as

Rubidium in the Interstellar Medium
We present observations of interstellar rubidium toward o Per, zeta Per, AE
Aur, HD 147889, chi Oph, zeta Oph, and 20 Aql. Theory suggests that stable 85Rb
and long-lived 87Rb are produced predominantly by high-mass stars, through a
combination of the weak s- and r-processes. The 85Rb/87Rb ratio was determined
from measurements of the Rb I line at 7800 angstroms and was compared to the
solar system meteoritic ratio of 2.59. Within 1-sigma uncertainties all
directions except HD 147889 have Rb isotope ratios consistent with the solar
system value. The ratio toward HD 147889 is much lower than the meteoritic
value and similar to that toward rho Oph A (Federman et al. 2004); both lines
of sight probe the Rho Ophiuchus Molecular Cloud. The earlier result was
attributed to a deficit of r-processed 85Rb. Our larger sample suggests instead
that 87Rb is enhanced in these two lines of sight. When the total elemental
abundance of Rb is compared to the K elemental abundance, the interstellar Rb/K
ratio is significantly lower than the meteoritic ratio for all the sight lines
in this study. Available interstellar samples for other s- and r- process

A systematic review of mobility instruments and their measurement properties for older acute medical patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Independent mobility is a key factor in determining readiness for discharge for older patients following acute hospitalisation and has also been identified as a predictor of many important outcomes for this patient group. This review aimed to identify a physical performance instrument that is not disease specific that has the properties required to accurately measure and monitor the mobility of older medical patients in the acute hospital setting.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Databases initially searched were Medline, Cinahl, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials without language restriction or limits on year of publication until July 2005. After analysis of this yield, a second step was the systematic search of Medline, Cinahl and Embase until August 2005 for evidence of the clinical utility of each potentially suitable instrument. Reports were included in this review if instruments described had face validity for measuring from bed bound to independent levels of ambulation, the items were suitable for application in an acute hospital setting and the instrument required observation (rather than self-report) of physical performance. Evidence of the clinical utility of each potentially suitable instrument was considered if data on measurement properties were reported.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Three instruments, the Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS), Hierarchical Assessment of Balance and Mobility (HABAM) and the Physical Performance Mobility Examination (PPME) were identified as potentially relevant. Clinimetric evaluation indicated that the HABAM has the most desirable properties of these three instruments. However, the HABAM has the limitation of a ceiling effect in an older acute medical patient population and reliability and minimally clinically important difference (MCID) estimates have not been reported for the Rasch refined HABAM. These limitations support the proposal that a new mobility instrument is required for older acute medical patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>No existing instrument has the properties required to accurately measure and monitor mobility of older acute medical patients.</p

Planetary Candidates Observed by Kepler IV: Planet Sample from Q1-Q8 (22 Months)
We provide updates to the Kepler planet candidate sample based upon nearly two years of high-precision photometry (i.e., Q1-Q8). From an initial list of nearly 13,400 threshold crossing events, 480 new host stars are identified from their flux time series as consistent with hosting transiting planets. Potential transit signals are subjected to further analysis using the pixel-level data, which allows background eclipsing binaries to be identified through small image position shifts during transit. We also re-evaluate Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) 1-1609, which were identified early in the mission, using substantially more data to test for background false positives and to find additional multiple systems. Combining the new and previous KOI samples, we provide updated parameters for 2738 Kepler planet candidates distributed across 2017 host stars. From the combined Kepler planet candidates, 472 are new from the Q1-Q8 data examined in this study. The new Kepler planet candidates represent ~40% of the sample with R_P ~ 1 R_⊕ and represent ~40% of the low equilibrium temperature (T_(eq) < 300 K) sample.
