Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization Foreground Removal with the SKA
The exceptional sensitivity of the SKA will allow observations of the Cosmic
Dawn and Epoch of Reionization (CD/EoR) in unprecedented detail, both
spectrally and spatially. This wealth of information is buried under Galactic
and extragalactic foregrounds, which must be removed accurately and precisely
in order to reveal the cosmological signal. This problem has been addressed
already for the previous generation of radio telescopes, but the application to
SKA is different in many aspects.
In this chapter we summarise the contributions to the field of foreground
removal in the context of high redshift and high sensitivity 21-cm
measurements. We use a state-of-the-art simulation of the SKA Phase 1
observations complete with cosmological signal, foregrounds and
frequency-dependent instrumental effects to test both parametric and
non-parametric foreground removal methods. We compare the recovered
cosmological signal using several different statistics and explore one of the
most exciting possibilities with the SKA --- imaging of the ionized bubbles.
We find that with current methods it is possible to remove the foregrounds
with great accuracy and to get impressive power spectra and images of the
cosmological signal. The frequency-dependent PSF of the instrument complicates
this recovery, so we resort to splitting the observation bandwidth into smaller
segments, each of a common resolution.
If the foregrounds are allowed a random variation from the smooth power law
along the line of sight, methods exploiting the smoothness of foregrounds or a
parametrization of their behaviour are challenged much more than non-parametric
ones. However, we show that correction techniques can be implemented to restore
the performances of parametric approaches, as long as the first-order

The aerodynamic performance of several flow control devices for internal flow systems
An experimental reseach and development program was undertaken to develop and document new flow-control devices for use in the major modifications to the 40 by 80 Foot wind tunnel at Ames Research Center. These devices, which are applicable to other facilities as well, included grid-type and quasi-two-dimensional flow straighteners, louver panels for valving, and turning-vane cascades with net turning angles from 0 deg to 90 deg. The tests were conducted at model scale over a Reynolds number range from 2 x 100,000 to 17 x 100,000, based on chord. The results showed quantitatively the performance benefits of faired, low-blockage, smooth-surface straightener systems, and the advantages of curved turning-vanes with hinge-line gaps sealed and a preferred chord-to-gap ratio between 2.5 and 3.0 for 45 deg or 90 deg turns
A GPU-based survey for millisecond radio transients using ARTEMIS
Astrophysical radio transients are excellent probes of extreme physical
processes originating from compact sources within our Galaxy and beyond. Radio
frequency signals emitted from these objects provide a means to study the
intervening medium through which they travel. Next generation radio telescopes
are designed to explore the vast unexplored parameter space of high time
resolution astronomy, but require High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions to
process the enormous volumes of data that are produced by these telescopes. We
have developed a combined software /hardware solution (code named ARTEMIS) for
real-time searches for millisecond radio transients, which uses GPU technology
to remove interstellar dispersion and detect millisecond radio bursts from
astronomical sources in real-time. Here we present an introduction to ARTEMIS.
We give a brief overview of the software pipeline, then focus specifically on
the intricacies of performing incoherent de-dispersion. We present results from
two brute-force algorithms. The first is a GPU based algorithm, designed to
exploit the L1 cache of the NVIDIA Fermi GPU. Our second algorithm is CPU based

Quantum Lattice Fluctuations and Luminescence in C_60
We consider luminescence in photo-excited neutral C_60 using the
Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model applied to a single C_60 molecule. To calculate the
luminescence we use a collective coordinate method where our collective
coordinate resembles the displacement of the carbon atoms of the Hg(8) phonon
mode and extrapolates between the ground state "dimerisation" and the exciton
polaron. There is good agreement for the existing luminescence peak spacing and
fair agreement for the relative intensity. We predict the existence of further

Suited for Success? : Suits, Status, and Hybrid Masculinity

Each of these men varied in their subject positions—body shape, ethnicity, age, and gender identity—which allowed us to look at the influence of men’s intersectional identities on their relationship with their suits. The men in our research all understood the suit according to its most common representation in popular culture: a symbol of hegemonic masculinity. While they wore the suit to embody hegemonic masculine configurations of practice—power, status, and rationality—most of these men were simultaneously marginalized by the gender hierarchy. We explain this disjuncture by using the concept of hybrid masculinity and illustrate that changes in the style of hegemonic masculinity leave its substance intact. Our findings expand thinking about hybrid masculinity by revealing the ways subordinated masculinities appropriate and reinforce hegemonic masculinity.Peer reviewe

An audit of the use of hydroxychloroquine in rheumatology clinics
Objectives To audit the use, indications, complications and patient information regarding hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment in rheumatology clinics in a tertiary referral centre. Methods During a 9-month period, we identified all patients prescribed HCQ and attending rheumatology clinics in one hospital. We established: (1) the indication for HCQ (2) the prevalence of HCQ overdosing based on absolute body weight (ABW) (3) documentation of warning of risk of retinal toxicity (4) systemic and ocular co-morbidities (5) ocular symptoms during treatment (6) reasons for stopping HCQ. Results We identified 427 patients (104 male, 323 female). The cumulative dose of HCQ was lower in rheumatoid arthritis (RA; median 365 g; range 6-1752 g) compared to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE; 450 g; 66-1788 g) (p = 0.105). The median duration of HCQ therapy was four years (range 0.1-13); 28% of patients with RA and 29% with SLE continued HCQ beyond five years. After adjusting for ABW and renal function, 10% (31/312) had been prescribed doses exceeding recommendations. Formal documentation of counselling on ocular complications was only found in one third of patients. Three cases of HCQ retinopathy were identified (all of whom had RA). Conclusion HCQ therapy is being used for more than five years in 29% of patients with rheumatic diseases, with higher than recommended doses in approximately 10% of patients. We recommend more rigorous scrutiny of the use of HCQ to reduce the risk of retinopathy
