Effect of White Spruce Release on Subsequent Defoliation by the Yellowheaded Spruce Sawfly, Pikonema Alaskensis (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae)
Hand release of 22 5-year-old white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, dramatically increased the amount of defoliation by the yellowheaded spruce sawfly, Pikonema alaskens is . The percent defoliation of the released trees was six times the defoliation in the control trees. A light overstory for young white spruce is suggested as a silvicultural method of reducing defoliation by this sawfly
Simple one-dimensional quantum-mechanical model for a particle attached to a surface
We present a simple one-dimensional quantum-mechanical model for a particle
attached to a surface. We solve the Schr\"odinger equation in terms of Weber
functions and discuss the behavior of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. We
derive the virial theorem and other exact relationships as well as the
asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues. We calculate the zero-point energy for
model parameters corresponding to H adsorbed on Pd(100) and also outline the
application of the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method
Investigations on T violation and CPT symmetry in the neutral kaon system -- a pedagogical approach --
During the recent years experiments with neutral kaons have yielded
remarkably sensitive results which are pertinent to such fundamental phenomena
as CPT invariance (protecting causality), time-reversal invariance violation,
coherence of wave functions, and entanglement of kaons in pair states. We
describe the phenomenological developments and the theoretical conclusions
drawn from the experimental material. An outlook to future experimentation is
indicated.Comment: 41 pages, 9 figures. See arXiv:hep-ph/0603075 for an enlarged versio
Temporal Ordering in Quantum Mechanics
We examine the measurability of the temporal ordering of two events, as well
as event coincidences. In classical mechanics, a measurement of the
order-of-arrival of two particles is shown to be equivalent to a measurement
involving only one particle (in higher dimensions). In quantum mechanics, we
find that diffraction effects introduce a minimum inaccuracy to which the
temporal order-of-arrival can be determined unambiguously. The minimum
inaccuracy of the measurement is given by dt=1/E where E is the total kinetic
energy of the two particles. Similar restrictions apply to the case of
coincidence measurements. We show that these limitations are much weaker than
limitations on measuring the time-of-arrival of a particle to a fixed location.Comment: New section added, arguing that order-of-arrival can be measured more
accurately than time-of-arrival. To appear in Journal of Physics
Screening of charged spheroidal colloidal particles
We study the effective screened electrostatic potential created by a
spheroidal colloidal particle immersed in an electrolyte, within the mean field
approximation, using Poisson--Botzmann equation in its linear and nonlinear
forms, and also beyond the mean field by means of Monte Carlo computer
simulation. The anisotropic shape of the particle has a strong effect on the
screened potential, even at large distances (compared to the Debye length) from
it. To quantify this anisotropy effect, we focus our study on the dependence of
the potential on the position of the observation point with respect with the
orientation of the spheroidal particle. For several different boundary
conditions (constant potential, or constant surface charge) we find that, at
large distance, the potential is higher in the direction of the large axis of
the spheroidal particle
The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice: topological excitations
We study the topological defects in the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet
in two dimensions on a triangular lattice (HAFT). While the topological
analysis of the order parameter space indicates that the defects are of
type, consideration of the energy leads us to a description of the low--energy
stationary points of the action in terms of vortices, as in the planar XY
model. Starting with the continuum description of the HAFT, we show
analytically that its partition function can be reduced to that of a
2--dimensional Coulomb gas with logarithmic interaction. Thus, at low
temperatures, the correlation length is determined by the spinwaves, while at
higher temperatures we expect a crossover to a Kosterlitz--Thouless type
behaviour. The results of recent Monte Carlo calculations of the correlation
length are consistent with such a crossover.Comment: 9 pages, revtex, preprint: ITP-UH 03/9
Gravitational Instantons, Confocal Quadrics and Separability of the Schr\"odinger and Hamilton-Jacobi equations
A hyperk\"ahler 4-metric with a triholomorphic SU(2) action gives rise to a
family of confocal quadrics in Euclidean 3-space when cast in the canonical
form of a hyperk\"ahler 4-metric metric with a triholomorphic circle action.
Moreover, at least in the case of geodesics orthogonal to the U(1) fibres, both
the covariant Schr\"odinger and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is separable and
the system integrable.Comment: 10 pages Late
