Micro-optics technology and sensor systems applications
The current generation of electro-optical sensors utilizing refractive and reflective optical elements require sophisticated, complex, and expensive designs. Advanced-technology-based electro-optical sensors of minimum size and weight require miniaturization of optical, electrical, and mechanical devices with an increasing trend toward integration of various components. Micro-optics technology has the potential in a number of areas to simplify optical design with improved performance. This includes internally cooled apertures, hybrid optical design, microlenses, dispersive multicolor microlenses, active dither, electronically controlled optical beam steer, and microscopic integration of micro-optics, detectors, and signal processing layers. This paper describes our approach to the development of micro-optics technology with our main emphasis for sensors applications
The 2010 AOP Workshop Summary Report
The rationale behind the current workshop, which was hosted by Biospherical Instruments Inc. (BSI), was to update the community and get community input with respect to the following: topics not addressed during the first workshop, specifically the processing of above-water apparent optical property (AOP data) within the Processing of Radiometric Observations of Seawater using Information Technologies (PROSIT) architecture; PROSIT data processing issues that have developed or tasks that have been completed, since the first workshop; and NASA instrumentation developments, both above- and in-water, that are relevant to both workshops and next generation mission planning. The workshop emphasized presentations on new AOP instrumentation, desired and required features for processing above-water measurements of the AOPs of seawater, working group discussions, and a community update for the in-water data processing already present in PROSIT. The six working groups were organized as follows: a) data ingest and data products; b) required and desired features for optically shallow and optically deep waters; c) contamination rejection (clouds), corrections, and data filtering; d) sun photometry and polarimetry; e) instrumentation networks; and f) hyperspectral versus fixed-wavelength sensors. The instrumentation networks working group was intended to provide more detailed information about desired and required features of autonomous sampling systems. Plenary discussions produced a number of recommendations for evolving and documenting PROSIT

Estates in Fee Tail - Quite generally estates in fee tail under the STATUTE DE DONIS were recognized by the states as a part of the common law. Statutory provisions in the way of modification and abolishment of such estates, however, are very common. The nature and scope of the statutory provisions have varied. See the states classified according to the character of the legislation in BREWSTER, CONVEYANCING, § § 142, 143
Adsorption and two-body recombination of atomic hydrogen on He-He mixture films
We present the first systematic measurement of the binding energy of
hydrogen atoms to the surface of saturated He-He mixture films.
is found to decrease almost linearly from 1.14(1) K down to 0.39(1) K, when the
population of the ground surface state of He grows from zero to
cm, yielding the value K cm
for the mean-field parameter of H-He interaction in 2D. The experiments
were carried out with overall He concentrations ranging from 0.1 ppm to 5 %
as well as with commercial and isotopically purified He at temperatures
70...400 mK. Measuring by ESR the rate constants and for
second-order recombination of hydrogen atoms in hyperfine states and we
find the ratio to be independent of the He content and to
grow with temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, all zipped in a sigle file. Submitted to Phys.

Dissipation and spontaneous symmetry breaking in brain dynamics
We compare the predictions of the dissipative quantum model of brain with
neurophysiological data collected from electroencephalograms resulting from
high-density arrays fixed on the surfaces of primary sensory and limbic areas
of trained rabbits and cats. Functional brain imaging in relation to behavior
reveals the formation of coherent domains of synchronized neuronal oscillatory
activity and phase transitions predicted by the dissipative model.Comment: Restyled, slight changes in title and abstract, updated bibliography,

Elastic p-3He and n-3H scattering with two- and three-body forces
We report on a microscopic calculation of n-3H and p-3He scattering employing
the Argonne v_{18} and v_8' nucleon-nucleon potentials with and without
additional three-nucleon force. An R-matrix analysis of the p-3He and n-3H
scattering data is presented. Comparisons are made for the phase shifts and a
selection of measurements in both scattering systems. Differences between our
calculation and the R-matrix results or the experimental data can be attributed
to only two partial waves (3P0 and 3P2). We find the effect of the Urbana IX
and the Texas-Los Alamos three-nucleon forces on the phase shifts to be
negligible.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Advances in Measuring the Apparent Optical Properties (AOPs) of Optically Complex Waters
This report documents new technology used to measure the apparent optical properties (AOPs) of optically complex waters. The principal objective is to be prepared for the launch of next-generation ocean color satellites with the most capable commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) instrumentation. An enhanced COTS radiometer was the starting point for designing and testing the new sensors. The follow-on steps were to apply the lessons learned towards a new in-water profiler based on a kite-shaped backplane for mounting the light sensors. The next level of sophistication involved evaluating new radiometers emerging from a development activity based on so-called microradiometers. The exploitation of microradiometers resulted in an in-water profiling system, which includes a sensor networking capability to control ancillary sensors like a shadowband or global positioning system (GPS) device. A principal advantage of microradiometers is their flexibility in producing, interconnecting, and maintaining instruments. The full problem set for collecting sea-truth data--whether in coastal waters or the open ocean-- involves other aspects of data collection that were improved for instruments measuring both AOPs and inherent optical properties (IOPs), if the uncertainty budget is to be minimized. New capabilities associated with deploying solar references were developed as well as a compact solution for recovering in-water instrument systems from small boats
Anomalous electric conductions in KSbO3-type metallic rhenium oxides
Single crystals of KSbO3-type rhenium oxides, La4Re6Orho(T)=\rho_{0}+AT^{n}(n \approx 1.6)$ in
a wide temperature range between 5 K and 300 K, which is extraordinary for
three-dimensional metals without strong electron correlations. The resistivity
of Bi3Re3O11 shows an anomaly around at 50 K, where the magnetic susceptibility
also detects a deviation from ordinary Pauli paramagnetism.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. J. Phys. Soc. Japan, in pres

Guideline for bolted joint design and analysis : version 1.0.
This document provides general guidance for the design and analysis of bolted joint connections. An overview of the current methods used to analyze bolted joint connections is given. Several methods for the design and analysis of bolted joint connections are presented. Guidance is provided for general bolted joint design, computation of preload uncertainty and preload loss, and the calculation of the bolted joint factor of safety. Axial loads, shear loads, thermal loads, and thread tear out are used in factor of safety calculations. Additionally, limited guidance is provided for fatigue considerations. An overview of an associated Mathcad{copyright} Worksheet containing all bolted joint design formulae presented is also provided
