On the Theory of Superfluidity in Two Dimensions
The superfluid phase transition of the general vortex gas, in which the
circulations may be any non-zero integer, is studied. When the net circulation
of the system is not zero the absence of a superfluid phase is shown. When the
net circulation of the vortices vanishes, the presence of off-diagonal long
range order is demonstrated and the existence of an order parameter is
proposed. The transition temperature for the general vortex gas is shown to be
the Kosterlitz---Thouless temperature. An upper bound for the average vortex
number density is established for the general vortex gas and an exact

Effective transport barriers in nontwist systems
In fluids and plasmas with zonal flow reversed shear, a peculiar kind of transport barrier appears in the shearless region, one that is associated with a proper route of transition to chaos. These barriers have been identified in symplectic nontwist maps that model such zonal flows. We use the so-called standard nontwist map, a paradigmatic example of nontwist systems, to analyze the parameter dependence of the transport through a broken shearless barrier. On varying a proper control parameter, we identify the onset of structures with high stickiness that give rise to an effective barrier near the broken shearless curve. Moreover, we show how these stickiness structures, and the concomitant transport reduction in the shearless region, are determined by a homoclinic tangle of the remaining dominant twin island chains. We use the finite-time rotation number, a recently proposed diagnostic, to identify transport barriers that separate different regions of stickiness. A community pharmacy weight management programme: an evaluation of effectiveness
<p>Background: Community pharmacies may offer an accessible way of delivering weight-management programmes but there have been few trials that use clinically significant weight loss outcomes, objective measures of weight and follow-up to 12Â months. We aimed to evaluate weight change among patients who used the Counterweight weight management programme delivered by community pharmacies.</p>
<p>Methods: The Counterweight Programme was introduced into community pharmacies in Fife, Scotland in 2009 for patients with a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 or a BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 with a co-morbidity in localities in which Counterweight was not available at GP practices. The aim was to achieve an energy deficit of 500-600 kcal per day. Counterweight specialist dietitians delivered training, support and patient information materials to community pharmacies. Patient weight was measured by pharmacy staff at each weight management session. Weight data recorded at each weight management session were used to estimate weight change and attendance at 3, 6 and 12 months.</p>
<p>Results: Between March 2009 and July 2012, 458 patients were enrolled by the community pharmacies. Three-quarters of patients were women, mean age was 54 (SD 7.4) years and mean BMI 36.1 (SD 5.9) kg/m2. Of 314 patients enrolled for at least 12 months, 32 (10.2% on an intention to treat basis) had achieved the target weight loss of ≥5%; this was 41.6% of those who attended at 12 months representing a mean weight loss of 4.1 kg. Using Last Observation Carried Forward, 15.9% achieved the target weight loss within 12 months of enrolling. There was no significant effect of sex, baseline BMI or age on weight loss.</p>
<p>Conclusions: The Counterweight pharmacy programme has a similar effectiveness to other primary care based weight management programmes and should be considered as part of a range of services available to a community to manage overweight and obesity.</p>
Hamiltonian approach to hybrid plasma models
The Hamiltonian structures of several hybrid kinetic-fluid models are
identified explicitly, upon considering collisionless Vlasov dynamics for the
hot particles interacting with a bulk fluid. After presenting different
pressure-coupling schemes for an ordinary fluid interacting with a hot gas, the
paper extends the treatment to account for a fluid plasma interacting with an
energetic ion species. Both current-coupling and pressure-coupling MHD schemes
are treated extensively. In particular, pressure-coupling schemes are shown to
require a transport-like term in the Vlasov kinetic equation, in order for the
Hamiltonian structure to be preserved. The last part of the paper is devoted to
studying the more general case of an energetic ion species interacting with a
neutralizing electron background (hybrid Hall-MHD). Circulation laws and

Undamped electrostatic plasma waves
Electrostatic waves in a collision-free unmagnetized plasma of electrons with
fixed ions are investigated for electron equilibrium velocity distribution
functions that deviate slightly from Maxwellian. Of interest are undamped waves
that are the small amplitude limit of nonlinear excitations, such as electron
acoustic waves (EAWs). A deviation consisting of a small plateau, a region with
zero velocity derivative over a width that is a very small fraction of the
electron thermal speed, is shown to give rise to new undamped modes, which here
are named {\it corner modes}. The presence of the plateau turns off Landau
damping and allows oscillations with phase speeds within the plateau. These
undamped waves are obtained in a wide region of the plane
( being the real part of the wave frequency and the
wavenumber), away from the well-known `thumb curve' for Langmuir waves and EAWs
based on the Maxwellian. Results of nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson simulations that
corroborate the existence of these modes are described. It is also shown that
deviations caused by fattening the tail of the distribution shift roots off of
the thumb curve toward lower -values and chopping the tail shifts them
toward higher -values. In addition, a rule of thumb is obtained for
assessing how the existence of a plateau shifts roots off of the thumb curve.
Suggestions are made for interpreting experimental observations of
electrostatic waves, such as recent ones in nonneutral plasmas.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
CIR Modulation of the X-ray Flux from the O7.5 III(n)((f)) Star xi Persei?
We analyze a 162 ks HETG Chandra observation of the O7.5 III(n)((f)) star xi
Per, together with contemporaneous H alpha observations. The X-ray spectrum of
this star is similar to other single O stars, and not pathological in any way.
Its UV wind lines are known to display cyclical time variability, with a period
of 2.086 days, which is thought to be associated with co-rotating interaction
regions (CIRs). We examine the Chandra and H alpha data for variability on this
time scale. We find that the X-rays vary by about 15% over the course of the
observations and that this variability is out of phase with variable absorption
on the blue wing of the H alpha profiles (assumed to be a surrogate for the UV
absorption associated with CIRs). While not conclusive, both sets of data are
consistent with models where the CIRs are either a source of X-rays or modulate
