β-agonist Regulate Skeletal Actin Gene Expression Post-transcriptionally

Previously reported studies have provided evidence that ractopamine regulates the expression of skeletal α- actin, but the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects are poorly understood. This was the first study to look specifically at the effects of ractopamine on the transcriptional regulation of a contractile protein in myotube cultures. Our model was sufficient to evaluate the anabolic effects of ractopamine in porcine skeletal muscle. However, we were unable to identify a cis-acting DNA element within the cloned porcine skeletal α-actin promoter that conferred transcriptional responsiveness to ractopamine in porcine skeletal muscle. Thus, it appears that ractopamine promotes the accumulation of skeletal α- actin mRNA in porcine skeletal muscle via a posttranscriptional mechanism. Elucidation of the mechanism whereby ractopamine increase skeletal muscle growth will aid in the development of new strategies, both genetic and pharmacological, to improve lean tissue deposition in livestock species

    Microcrack Initiation and Growth

A Monte Carlo simulation technique to predict the mean and scatter in fatigue lifetime of certain 2000 and 7000 series aluminum alloys is described. The method is based upon models of surface microcrack nucleation and early growth, which comprise the initiation phase of the fatigue failure process. The experimental basis for the models is discussed, and examples of predicted numbers and lengths of microcracks developed during fatigue of Al 2219-T851 are compared with experiments. Scatter in lifetime and mean lifetime predictions are also discussed. These are obtained from repeated running of the fatigue simulation, for which scatter in lifetime results from the effect of local microscopic variations in alloy microstructure on the time of crack initiation. The association of the method with a retirement for cause philosophy is noted

Testosterone, Social Class, and Antisocial Behavior in a Sample of 4,462 Men

Two hypotheses have been offered to explain the relation between testosterone and antisocial behavior in delinquent and criminal populations. One is that testosterone leads directly to antisocial behavior. The other is that a constellation of dominance, competitiveness, and sensation seeking associated with testosterone leads to either antisocial or prosocial behavior, depending upon an individual\u27s resources and background. Analysis of archival data from 4,462 U.S military veterans supported the first hypothesis: Testosterone was correlated with a variety of antisocial behaviors among all individuals, however, socioeconomic status (SES) Proved to be a moderating variable, with weaker Testosterone-behavior relationships among high SES subjects
