This thesis explores the international spotlight's effect on Olympic host states and their bid promises to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the international community. Through an in-depth study of the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics, the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics, and the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, it becomes apparent that host states' bids to host the Summer Olympics are largely determined by the international appeal of hosting such an event. The result of this is that hosts often do not follow through on their cultural and social goals laid out to the International Olympic Committee during the bidding process, and if they do, they are not executed in a manner that truly reflects a genuine commitment to the issue at hand. Sydney, Athens, and Beijing all proposed unique ways to embody the universal ideals of the Olympic Charter, but once the international spotlight turned toward the host state, all commitments and promises fell second behind the host state's desire to present a distinct and constructed global image to the world
