Revisiting W gamma production at RHIC
We discuss W gamma production in polarized p p collisions at RHIC energy. We
point out that the RHIC collider has two advantages over other hadron colliders
to measure the characteristic feature of W gamma production: (1) the RHIC
energy is not so high and (2) the polarized beams are available. We calculate
the tree level cross section for W gamma production using a generic spin basis
for W and discuss both the angular dependence and spin correlation.Comment: 14 pages, 15 Postscript figure
An aerogel Cherenkov detector for multi-GeV photon detection with low sensitivity to neutrons
We describe a novel photon detector which operates under an intense flux of
neutrons. It is composed of lead-aerogel sandwich counter modules. Its salient
features are high photon detection efficiency and blindness to neutrons. As a
result of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, the efficiency for photons with the
energy larger than 1 GeV is expected to be higher than 99.5% and that for 2
GeV/ neutrons less than 1%. The performance on the photon detection under
such a large flux of neutrons was measured for a part of the detector. It was
confirmed that the efficiency to photons with the energy 1 GeV was
consistent with the MC expectation within 8.2% uncertainty.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, submitted to Prog. Theor. Exp. Phy
High stability design for new centrifugal compressor
It is essential that high-performance centrifugal compressors be free of subsynchronous vibrations. A new high-performance centrifugal compressor has been developed by applying the latest rotordynamics knowledge and design techniques: (1) To improve the system damping, a specially designed oil film seal was developed. This seal attained a damping ratio three times that of the conventional design. The oil film seal contains a special damper ring in the seal cartridge. (2) To reduce the destabilizing effect of the labyrinth seal, a special swirl canceler (anti-swirl nozzle) was applied to the balance piston seal. (3) To confirm the system damping margin, the dynamic simulation rotor model test and the full load test applied the vibration exciting test in actual load conditions
Atmospheres and Spectra of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars -- III. Partially Ionized Hydrogen Models
We construct partially ionized hydrogen atmosphere models for magnetized
neutron stars in radiative equilibrium with surface fields B=10^12-5 \times
10^14 G and effective temperatures T_eff \sim a few \times 10^5-10^6 K. These
models are based on the latest equation of state and opacity results for
magnetized, partially ionized hydrogen plasmas that take into account various
magnetic and dense medium effects. The atmospheres directly determine the
characteristics of thermal emission from isolated neutron stars. For the models
with B=10^12-10^13 G, the spectral features due to neutral atoms lie at extreme
UV and very soft X-ray energy bands and therefore are difficult to observe.
However, the continuum flux is also different from the fully ionized case,
especially at lower energies. For the superstrong field models (B\ga 10^14 G),
we show that the vacuum polarization effect not only suppresses the proton
cyclotron line as shown previously, but also suppresses spectral features due
to bound species; therefore spectral lines or features in thermal radiation are
more difficult to observe when the neutron star magnetic field is \ga 10^14 G.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures; ApJ, accepted (v599: Dec 20, 2003
Experimental study of the decay
The first dedicated search for the rare neutral-kaon decay
has been carried out in the E391a experiment at the
KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. The final upper limit of 2.6 at
the 90% confidence level was set on the branching ratio for the decay.Comment: 23 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication as a regular article

Annealing Effect for Supersolid Fraction in He
We report on experimental confirmation of the non-classical rotational
inertia (NCRI) in solid helium samples originally reported by Kim and Chan. The
onset of NCRI was observed at temperatures below ~400 mK. The ac velocity for
initiation of the NCRI suppression is estimated to be ~10 m/sec. After an
additional annealing of the sample at K for 12 hours, ~ 10% relative
increase of NCRI fraction was observed. Then after repeated annealing with the
same conditions, the NCRI fraction was saturated. It differs from Reppy's
observation on a low pressure solid sample.Comment: to be published in J. of Low Temp. Phys. (QFS2006 proceedings
Magnetars as cooling neutron stars with internal heating
We study thermal structure and evolution of magnetars as cooling neutron
stars with a phenomenological heat source in a spherical internal layer. We
explore the location of this layer as well as the heating rate that could
explain high observable thermal luminosities of magnetars and would be
consistent with the energy budget of neutron stars. We conclude that the heat
source should be located in an outer magnetar's crust, at densities rho < 5e11
g/cm^3, and should have the heat intensity of the order of 1e20 erg/s/cm^3.
Otherwise the heat energy is mainly emitted by neutrinos and cannot warm up the
surface.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRA
