Scoping study of the feasibility of developing a software tool to assist designers of pedestrian crossing places
This report is the outcome of a scoping study of how guidance can be provided for practising highway engineers in designing informal pedestrian crossing facilities. The main component of this report is an analysis by an IT consultant of a range of mechanisms for delivery of this. The study was informed by the opinions of a group of practitioners who have a direct interest in the provision of pedestrian facilities.

Re-examining Strategic Flexibility: A Meta-Analysis of its Antecedents, Consequences and Contingencies
Strategic flexibility (SF) is a concept that has evolved from strategy through other disciplines, including management, marketing, innovation, entrepreneurship and operations. However, despite attempts to consolidate the domain of SF, there remain theoretical and empirical tensions underlying its antecedents, the consequences and contingencies of SF. Based on 106 independent samples reported in 98 different studies (n = 26,940 firms), we provide a meta-analytical examination of these tensions. We highlight and resolve several disagreements regarding the enablers, inhibitors and triggers of SF, and we reveal an adjusted mean performance effect of 0.24. We further find that the measurement of SF, as well as some, but not all, dimensions of the environment, moderate the performance effect. Finally, an explorative analysis reveals that innovation outcomes and market outcomes mediate the positive relationship between SF and financial outcomes, in addition to a negative direct effect. These insights provide a comprehensive and coherent understanding of the nomological network of SF and a stronger basis for further theorising and conducting empirical research. Moreover, our findings help firms to refine their strategy by implementing the right enablers that drive SF and to understand how and when their investment in SF pays off

Constructions of generalized complex structures in dimension four
Four-manifold theory is employed to study the existence of (twisted)
generalized complex structures. It is shown that there exist (twisted)
generalized complex structures that have more than one type change loci. In an
example-driven fashion, (twisted) generalized complex structures are
constructed on a myriad of four-manifolds, both simply and non-simply
connected, which are neither complex nor symplectic
Superconductors with Magnetic Impurities: Instantons and Sub-gap States
When subject to a weak magnetic impurity potential, the order parameter and
quasi-particle energy gap of a bulk singlet superconductor are suppressed.
According to the conventional mean-field theory of Abrikosov and Gor'kov, the
integrity of the energy gap is maintained up to a critical concentration of
magnetic impurities. In this paper, a field theoretic approach is developed to
critically analyze the validity of the mean field theory. Using the
supersymmetry technique we find a spatially homogeneous saddle-point that
reproduces the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, and identify instanton contributions
to the density of states that render the quasi-particle energy gap soft at any
non-zero magnetic impurity concentration. The sub-gap states are associated
with supersymmetry broken field configurations of the action. An analysis of
fluctuations around these configurations shows how the underlying supersymmetry
of the action is restored by zero modes. An estimate of the density of states
is given for all dimensionalities. To illustrate the universality of the
present scheme we apply the same method to study `gap fluctuations' in a normal
quantum dot coupled to a superconducting terminal. Using the same instanton
approach, we recover the universal result recently proposed by Vavilov et al.
Finally, we emphasize the universality of the present scheme for the
description of gap fluctuations in d-dimensional superconducting/normal

Vortex Pinball Under Crossed AC Drives in Superconductors with Periodic Pinning Arrays
Vortices driven with both a transverse and a longitudinal AC drive which are
out of phase are shown to exhibit a novel commensuration-incommensuration
effect when interacting with periodic substrates. For different AC driving
parameters, the motion of the vortices forms commensurate orbits with the
periodicity of the pinning array. When the commensurate orbits are present,
there is a finite DC critical depinning threshold, while for the incommensurate
phases the vortices are delocalized and the DC depinning threshold is absent.Comment: 4 pages, 4 postscript figure
