IMPACT OF FARM SIZE AND TYPE ON COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

    Get PDF
This study examined sustained competitive advantage for a sample of Kansas farms. Whole-farm data for 224 farms with continuous data from 1982-2001 were used. Overall efficiency was computed for each farm and year. Sixty farms exhibited a sustained competitive advantage. Seventy-six farms exhibited a sustained competitive disadvantage. Farms with a competitive advantage were relatively larger, received more of their gross farm income from dairy and swine production, had significantly lower expense ratios, and had significantly higher profit margins.Farm Management,

Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph Parallel Observations of the Planetary Nebula M94-20

The planetary nebula M94--20 in the Large Magellanic Cloud was serendipitously observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the Hubble Space Telescope Archival Pure Parallel Program. We present spatially resolved imaging and spectral data of the nebula and compare them with ground based data, including detection of several emission lines from the nebula and the detection of the central star. We find the total H alpha + [NII] flux = 7.3e-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 and we estimate the magnitude of the central star to be m_V = 26.0 +/- 0.2. Many other H alpha sources have been found in M31, M33 and NGC 205 as well. We discuss the use of the parallel observations as a versatile tool for planetary nebula surveys and for other fields of astronomical research.Comment: Latex, 14 pages, 2 JPEG figures, 2 tables. Gypsy moths and American dog ticks: Space partners

    Get PDF
An experiment intended for the space shuttle and designed to investigate the effects of weightlessness and total darkness on gypsy moth eggs and engorged American dog ticks is described. The objectives are: (1) to reevaluate the effects of zero gravity on the termination of diapause/hibernation of embryonated gypsy moth eggs, (2) to determine the effect of zero gravity on the ovipositions and subsequent hatch from engorged female American dog ticks that have been induced to diapause in the laboratory, and (3) to determine whether morphological or biochemical changes occur in the insects under examination. Results will be compared with those from a similar experiment conducted on Skylab 4

SUPERMARKET PATRONAGE: AN ANALYSIS OF CUSTOMER COUNTS AMONG OUTLETS WITHIN A GEOGRAPHIC AREA

    Get PDF
As new supermarket management tools are introduced, the need for an improved understanding of store patronage is growing. Weekly customer counts for five supermarkets located in a Southeastern metropolitan area covering 261 weeks are analyzed. Descriptive statistics indicate that food shopper patterns vary by outlet. Regression equations are estimated for each location. Results point to store specific relationships. They indicate that evaluation of television and radio ads and double couponing can be quite involved.Consumer/Household Economics,
