Physical properties of single-crystalline fibers of the colossal-magnetoresistance manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3

We have grown high-quality single crystals of the colossal-magnetoresistance (CMR) material La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 by using the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method. Samples were grown as fibers of different diameters, and with lengths of the order of centimeters. Their composition and structure were verified through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microcopy with EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis) and by Rietveld analysis. The quality of the crystalline fibers was confirmed by Laue and EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) patterns. Rocking curves performed along the fiber axis revealed a half-height width of 0.073 degrees. The CMR behavior was confirmed by electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements as a function of temperature.Comment: 11 pages (including 3 figures); to appear in Appl. Phys. Let

Caracterização morfológica de germoplasma de inhame.

O cultivo do inhame (Discorea sp.) vem crescendo nos últimos anos e ganhando produções expressivas no Brasil e no mundo. No cenário mundial, a Nigéria está em primeiro lugar, com a produção em 2010, de 29 milhões de toneladas. A produção e área plantada no Brasil em 2010 foram de aproximadamente 232 mil toneladas e 25 mil hectares, respectivamente (FAOSTAT, 2012). A cultura concentra-se principalmente na Região Nordeste. Embora o inhame represente a fonte de renda de várias famílias brasileiras, pouco se conhece a respeito da variabilidade genética nessa cultura. Portanto, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade genética de 39 acessos de inhame pertencentes ao germoplasma da UFRB por meio de características morfológicas. A análise da diversidade utilizando características qualitativas evidenciou variabilidade entre os acessos avaliados, com distâncias genética que variaram de 0 a 4.22%. Essas informações servirão de base para auxiliar as estratégias de melhoramento genético da espécie; que visa à obtenção de variedades de inhame mais produtivas e resistentes aos principais fatores bióticos e abióticos

Quantum information entropy of a particle trapped by the Aharonov-Bohm-type effect

In this research article, we use the Shannon's formalism to investigate the quantum information entropy of a particle trapped by the Aharonov-Bohm-type effect. For quantum information study, it is necessary to investigate the eigenstates of the quantum system, i. e., the wave functions and energies of the quantum states. We assumed that the particle is in principle, confined in a cylindrical box in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm-type effect due to dislocation defect. Analysis of the quantum information entropy, reveals that the dislocation influences the eigenstates and, consequently, the quantum information of the system.Comment: 15 pages, 2 captioned figures.
