On the MHD load and the MHD metage

In analogy with the load and the metage in hydrodynamics, we define magnetohydrodynamic load and magnetohydrodynamic metage in the case of magnetofluids. They can be used to write the magnetic field in MHD in Clebsch's form. We show how these two concepts can be utilised to derive the magnetic analogue of the Ertel's theorem and also, how in the presence of non-trivial topology of the magnetic field in the magnetofluid one may associate the linking number of the magnetic field lines with the invariant MHD loads. Contribution sur Pierre-Daniel Huet, Commentarius de rebus ad eum pertinentibus (1718)

Écrit en latin par Pierre-Daniel Huet (1630-1721), le Commentarius de rebus ad eum pertinentibus (1718) relève du genre des mémoires. Son titre, volontairement daté, le relie à la double tradition du commentaire : il relève en effet du genre qu’illustra César, désigné au XVIe siècle sous l’appellation de commentarius simplex, qui se rapporte à l’expérience d’un individu. Mais l’oeuvre de ce polymathe, qui fut sous-précepteur du Dauphin et tardif homme d’Église, par ses contenus, entretient aussi des liens avec le commentarius in aliud, qui porte sur les ouvrages d’un autre écrivain : fervent connaisseur des textes antiques, Huet publia en particulier une traduction accompagnée de nombreuses observations des commentaires d’Origène sur saint Matthieu. Le Commentarius a pour objet essentiel Huet lui-même. En forgeant pour lui la figure d’un savant, l’auteur montre la transformation des pratiques culturelles de son époque et l’écart qui se creuse dans la connaissance des textes anciens entre les savants et le public cultivé des mondains : son rôle dans l’élaboration de la collection Ad usum Delphini traduit cette nécessité de prendre en compte ce changement. Pour justifier son entreprise autobiographique, l’auteur lui donne in fine une assise théorique par une enquête historique et comparative sur le genre des mémoires qui le légitime. Témoin face à la postérité, Huet met un point final aux différends qu’il a pu connaître avec d’autres et rend compte d’une évolution personnelle où le contact tardif avec le religieux lui a permis, dans ce monde transformé, de retrouver une véritable cohérence en légitimant son appétit des savoirs.Pierre-Daniel Huet (1630-1721) chose Latin to write his Commentarius de rebus ad eum pertinentibus (1718), a work akin to memoirs. Its purposefully dated title, however, ties it to the dual tradition behind comments. Indeed, it echoes Caesar’s commentarius simplex – a 16th century denomination – dealing with events affecting the individual. Huet’s work also evokes the commentarius in aliud, dealing with the writings of another. Huet was a polymath who tutored the heir to the throne of France and became ordained late in life. He was also quite knowledgeable about ancient texts and he published a well-annotated translation of Origen’s comments on Saint Matthew. The Commentarius focuses essentially on Huet himself, depicting him as a scholar. In so doing, the author illustrates the evolving cultural practices of his days and the widening chasm between learned men and educated socialites over ancient writings. His role in the elaboration of the Ad usum Delphini collection highlights the need to account for this change. In the end, Huet justifies his autobiographical endeavour – and gains legitimacy – by giving it a theoretical grounding through a historical and comparative exploration of memoirs as a genre. A witness standing before posterity, Huet puts an end to the squabbles that pitted him against others. He also unfurls a personal transformation during which his late encounter with the sacred allowed him to regain true coherence in a changed world by legitimising his quest for knowledge
