    Get PDF

A novel gram-positive, aerobic, actinobacterial strain, CMAA 1362T, was isolated from marine sponge Scopalina ruetzleri collected in the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago. São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago (former Saint Paul`s Rocks) liaison the São Paulo Fracture Zone, 1,010 km northeast from Brazilian mainland in the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Brazil (0°54’57”N; 29°20\'41\"W). It is one of the smallest and most isolated archipelagos in the world, with 420 m across, 18 m height and 1.7 ha. The archipelago is under the influence of the South Equatorial Current, driving surface water from east to west, and the Equatorial Undercurrent, moving water in the opposite direction between 40-150 m depth. Tissue samples of the marine sponge Scopalina ruetzleri were collected by SCUBA between 20 and 30 m depth at the East Face of São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago in August, 2013. This is the first report of marine species of the genera Geodermatophilus. The isolate grew in a temperature range between 15-30°C and pH 6.0-10.0, showed high halotolerance 5-12.5% NaCl (w/v) and black-dry and circular colonies on cultures media. Chemotaxonomic and molecular characteristics of the isolate match those described for members of the genus Geodermatophilus. The DNA G + C content of the genome strain was 69.41 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids were found to be the branched-chain satured acid iso-C16:0 and iso-C15:0, as well as C17:1?8c and C18:1?9c. Molecular analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence showed 97.2 - 98.4% of pairwise sequence identity with members of the genus Geodermatophilus: Geodermatophilus obscurus (98.4%), Geodermatophilus siccatus (98.3%), Geodermatophilus africanus (98%), Geodermatophilus ruber (97.3%) and Geodermatophilus tzadiensis (97.1%). Based on the results of this polyphasic taxonomic description, the strain type CMAA 1362 represents a novel species, for which the name Geodermatophilus marinus sp. nov. is proposed

Effect of resistant and susceptible soybean cultivars on the nymphal development, fecundity and mortality of Euschistus heros (Hemiptera:pentatomidae).

The association of resistant varieties and biological control has great interest and potential to be used for pest management. lhe aims of this work were to evaluate the effect of cultivars Silvânia (susceptible to stink bug attack), Dowling e IACI00 (resistant) on E. heras nymph development and to investigate the influence of the flavonoids on the resistance [1]. Nymphs of stink bug were placed in Petri dishes on a diet of soybean pods and observed daily. After adult emergence, they were weight and then put in pairs for mating. lhe nymph mortality, the adult longevity, fecundity and the eggs fertility were evaluated for each cultivar. To quantify the flavonoid compounds, extracts of immature seeds (cv Silvânia and Dowling) undamaged and damage by herbivory, were analysed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). lhe nymphs reared on cv Dowling did not complete their biological cycle. Survivorship curves of immatures in cv. Sylvania and IAClOO, analysed by Kaplan-Meier Survival Distribution, did not show significant difference. lhe medium weight of adults on others cultivars was not different. lhe medium male longevity on cv IAClOOwas 11.0 days, while on cv Silvânia was 35.8 days; for females was 13.4 days on cv IAClOOand 40.6 days on cv Silvânia. lhe female fecundity (105.7 eggs/female) and egg fertility (66.3 nymphs) on cv Silvânia were higher than on cv IACI00 (10.2 eggs/female e 5.8 nymphs). Total amount of flavonoids compounds was higher in cv Silvânia than in cv Dowling, but did not differ when compared between herbivory damage and undamaged plants in the same cultivar. These results suggest that the cv IACI00 and Dowling present direct defense (constitutive) against E. heras, and that the herbivory damage did not induce flavonoids production

Electrostatic self-force in (2+1)-dimensional cosmological gravity

    Get PDF
Point sources in (2+1)-dimensional gravity are conical singularities that modify the global curvature of the space giving rise to self-interaction effects on classical fields. In this work we study the electrostatic self-interaction of a point charge in the presence of point masses in (2+1)-dimensional gravity with a cosmological constant.Comment: 9 pages, Late
