The Position of Insider (Emic) and Outsider (Etic): A Review of Deborah Court and Randa Khair Abbas’ Insider-Outsider Research in Qualitative Inquiry: New Perspectives on Method and Meaning

    Get PDF
In their book, Insider-Outsider Research in Qualitative Inquiry: New Perspectives on Method and Meaning by Deborah Court and Randa Khair Abbas, they deconstruct the outdated or puzzling terminology associated with this type of research, examine ethical challenges, and recommend methodological approaches. This book also situates qualitative insider-outsider research, by its very nature, within the larger research ecology. The authors describe in full a researcher partnership—a relationship that is more personal and fruitful than a team and significantly more than the sum of its parts. Through their nearly two-decade-long research collaboration and study of the Israeli Druze, the authors have established mutual trust, which has led to a deeper understanding of cultural norms and the meanings they convey. Examples from their research with Israeli Druze will be used to illustrate this argument and their methodology. This book will be of interest to ethnographers, qualitative researchers, and graduate students of all experience levels

Phenomenology of production and decay of spinning extra-dimensional black holes at hadron colliders

    Get PDF
We present results of CHARYBDIS2, a new Monte Carlo simulation of black hole production and decay at hadron colliders in theories with large extra dimensions and TeV-scale gravity. The main new feature of CHARYBDIS2 is a full treatment of the spin-down phase of the decay process using the angular and energy distributions of the associated Hawking radiation. Also included are improved modelling of the loss of angular momentum and energy in the production process as well as a wider range of options for the Planck-scale termination of the decay. The new features allow us to study the effects of black hole spin and the feasibility of its observation in such theories

De proportionaliteitstoets ex art. 7:940 lid 3 BW.

Acacia mangium tannin as formaldehyde scavenger for low molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde resin in bonding tropical plywood

    Get PDF
One of the limitations in using low molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde (LmwPF) resin as a binder for wood-based panels is the amount of the free formaldehyde being emitted during soaking, pressing and sometimes during the earlier stage of application. Tannin from bark extracts is rich in phenolic compounds, and thus may be able to absorb this free formaldehyde and at the same time provide strength to the joint. In this study, tannin–phenol-formaldehyde adhesives were prepared by blending Acacia mangium bark extracts (40% solids) with low molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde (40% solids at 1:1 ratio). The tannin–LmwPF adhesive produced cured within 4 min at 130°C, reduced the free formaldehyde to level E1 of European norm EN-120. The 3-ply plywood had acceptable shear strength (>1.0 MPa) exceeding the minimum requirements of European norms EN-314-1 and EN-314-2:1993 for interior and exterior applications, respectively. The study has shown that Acacia mangium tannin can be used as formaldehyde scavenger in LmwPF resin without compromising the strength of the joints
