Joint Majorization in Continuous Matrix Algebras

Various notions of joint majorization are examined in continuous matrix algebras. The relative strengths of these notions are established via proofs and examples. In addition, the closed convex hulls of joint unitary orbits are completely characterized in continuous matrix algebras via notions of joint majorization. Some of these characterizations are extended to subhomogeneous C∗^*-algebras

Intramolecular Nitrogen Delivery for the Synthesis of C-Glycosphingolipids. Application to the C-Glycoside of the Immunostimulant KRN7000

The key reaction in this approach to C-glycosphingolipids is the stereoselective iodocyclization of a sugar-linked homoallylic carbonimidothioate. E and Z reaction substrates were assembled in a convergent fashion via an alkene metathesis strategy and exhibited the same alkene facial selectivity in the iodocyclization irrespective of alkene geometry, although the E alkene was found to be less reactive

Can Authority Affect False Memories?: A Study of Misinformation

The aim for our research was to distinguish whether there was a connection between authority and the amount of misinformation retained. By identifying any vulnerabilities, ideally we can find a way to prepare for it and prevent it.https://first.fanshawec.ca/cri_ridposters/1006/thumbnail.jp

PALABRAS CLAVES: Erythropodium caribaeorum, eritrólido, octocoral ABSTRACT The secondary metabolites of Erythropodium caribaeorum ( order Gorgonacea, subclass Octocorallia) have been previously isolated. However, since we know that the chemical composition of octocorals may vary with place of collection, time of year, etc., we decided to have another loo k at the metabolites of E. caribaeorum collected off Tobago. By using conventional chromatography techniques, we were able to isolate six known briarane diterpenes from the ethyl acetate fraction of this species. They were identified as erythrolides A, B, E, F, 1 and J through the combined use of IR, UV, [aJ0 and NMR data. Erythrolide 1 had not previously been reported in specimens from Tobago, but has been found in E. caribaeorum from the U.S. Virgin Islands and Jamaica. Key words: Erythropodium caribaeorum, Erythrolide, Octocoral

    2,3,4,6-Tetra-O-benzoyl-4-nitrophenyl-1-thio-α-d-mannopyranoside–dichloromethane–diethyl ether mixed solvate (1/0.53/0.38)

The title compound, C40H31NO11S·0.53CH2Cl2·0.38C4H10O, was synthesized in two steps from mannose pentaacetate and single crystals were grown by slow evaporation. The structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the α-configuration of the anomeric thioaryl substituent. The asymmetric unit contains two crystallographically distinct molecules of the carbohydrate. The central pyranose rings of these are geometrically similar, but there are differences in the orientations of the benzoate substituents

Knowledge Levels, Attitude and Beliefs of Men towards the Digital Rectal Examinations (DRE): A study in Trinidad

Background: Trinidad and Tobago have been ranked as having one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the Caribbean. Prostate cancer was identified as the most common cancer in men, with a higher mortality than any other cancer. At least 1 in 9 men in Trinidad and Tobago will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine knowledge levels, attitudes, and beliefs of men aged 40 years and over regarding digital rectal examination (DRE). The investigators considered this crucial following the scourge of prostate cancer in Trinidad and Tobago and an apparent lack of the use of the DRE, a noted method of screening for the condition for early detection. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was undertaken using 216 men who were at least 40 years old and who gave their informed consent; these men were attending a central mall in Trinidad in the month of April 2018 when the data was collected. Data was collected using the researchers’ designed, self-administered questionnaire and analysed using SPSS version 20. Result: Results indicate that most men (95.8%) are knowledgeable/very knowledgeable about DRE. Similarly, most (64.6%) of the men have favourable/very favourable attitudes towards DRE while 59.3% of them indicated that their beliefs have little or major influence regarding their participation in DRE. It also showed that the men’s beliefs are associated with their ethnicity (pDiscussion/Recommendation/Conclusion: The findings suggest that perhaps the attitudes and beliefs of men aged 40 years and over attending this mall are better predictors of intentions than their knowledge. This needs to be explored further given the need to curb the prevalence of prostate cancer amongst men in Trinidad and Tobago

The title compound, C21H26O10S, was synthesized in a single step from mannose pentaacetate. The molecular structure confirms the α configuration of the anomeric thioaryl substituent. Spectroscopic and melting-point data obtained for the title compound are in disagreement with those previously reported, indicating the previously reported synthesis [Durette & Shen (1980 ▶). Carbohydr. Res. 81, 261–274] to be erroneous. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds

Border skirmishes and the question of belonging: An authoethnographic account of everyday exclusion in multicultural society

    Get PDF
Transnational migration has transformed most European countries, making the problem of how to 'integrate' an increasingly popular topic in public debates and social policy. It is assumed that as long as the newcomer learns the language, adapts to the local customs and finds work, s/he will be integrated and welcomed with open arms as a full-fledged member of society. Based on an autoethnography of our experiences as US-born, long-term and fully 'integrated' residents of the Netherlands, one of Europe's most multicultural societies, we have explored some of the subtle, well-intentioned practices of distancing and exclusion that are part of the fabric of everyday life. We will show how, contrary to the official discourse of integration, 'Dutch-ness' as a white/ethnic national identity is continuously constructed as a 'we', which excludes all 'others'. And, indeed, we have discovered that, paradoxically, the closer the 'other' comes to being completely assimilated into Dutch society, the more the symbolic borders of national belonging may need to be policed and tightened. © The Author(s) 2011
