Latching overcurrent circuit breaker
Circuit breaker consists of a preset current amplitude sensor, and a lamp-photo-resistor combination in a feedback arrangement which energizes a power switching relay. The ac input power is removed from the load at predetermined current amplitudes
Universality classes of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation
We re-examine mode-coupling theory for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation
in the strong coupling limit and show that there exists two branches of
solutions. One branch (or universality class) only exists for dimensionalities
and is similar to that found by a variety of analytic approaches,
including replica symmetry breaking and Flory-Imry-Ma arguments. The second
branch exists up to and gives values for the dynamical exponent
similar to those of numerical studies for .Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, published versio
Reinforcement Learning: A Survey
This paper surveys the field of reinforcement learning from a
computer-science perspective. It is written to be accessible to researchers
familiar with machine learning. Both the historical basis of the field and a
broad selection of current work are summarized. Reinforcement learning is the
problem faced by an agent that learns behavior through trial-and-error
interactions with a dynamic environment. The work described here has a
resemblance to work in psychology, but differs considerably in the details and
in the use of the word ``reinforcement.'' The paper discusses central issues of
reinforcement learning, including trading off exploration and exploitation,
establishing the foundations of the field via Markov decision theory, learning
from delayed reinforcement, constructing empirical models to accelerate
learning, making use of generalization and hierarchy, and coping with hidden
state. It concludes with a survey of some implemented systems and an assessment
of the practical utility of current methods for reinforcement learning.Comment: See http://www.jair.org/ for any accompanying file
The ultraviolet excess of quasars 3: The highly polarized quasars PKS 0736+017 and PKS 1510-089
Ultraviolet/optical/infrared spectrophotometry of the highly-polarized quasars (HPQ's) PKS 0736+017 and PKS 1510-089 is analyzed. A blazar continuum component like that in BL Lac objects (e.g. with violent variability, high polarization, and a steep power-law shape) contributes about half the visual light of 1510-089, and at least three-quarters of that in 0736+017. The remaining light has the same spectrum as normal (low-polarization) quasars, including an ultraviolet excess or blue bump, which is easily detected in the IUE spectra of 1510-089, and weakly detected in 0736+017. The line fluxes do vary, but not as much as the continuum. The ratios of the broad emission lines, and the Balmer continuum are normal in both quasars
Electroweak Baryogenesis with dimension-6 Higgs interactions
We present the computation of the baryon asymmetry in the SM amplified by
dimension-6 Higgs interactions using the WKB approximation. Analyzing the
one-loop potential it turns out that the phase transition is strongly first
order in a wide range of the parameters. It is ensured not to wash out the net
baryon number gained previously even for Higgs masses up to at least 170 GeV.
In addition dimension-6 operators induce new sources of CP violation. Novel
source terms which enhance the generated baryon asymmetry emerge in the
transport equations. This model predicts a baryon to entropy ratio close to the
observed value for a large part of the parameter space.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Talk given at the 8th International Moscow

The impact of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games on employment and wages in Georgia
Using the standard differences-in-differences (DD) technique and a modified DD technique in the slopes, this paper determines that hosting the 1996 Summer Olympic Games boosted employment by 17% in the counties of Georgia affiliated with and close to Olympic activity, relative to employment increases in other counties in Georgia (the rate of growth increased by 0.002 percentage points per quarter). Estimation of a random-growth model confirms a positive impact of the Olympics on employment. In addition, the employment impact is shown not to be merely a "metropolitan statistical area (MSA) effect"; employment in the northern Olympic venue areas was found to increase 11% more post- versus pre-Olympics than it did in other, similar southern MSAs. The evidence of an Olympic impact on wages is weak
Advanced cogeneration research study: Executive summary
This study provides a broad based overview of selected areas relevant to the development of a comprehensive Southern California Edison (SCE) advanced cogeneration project. The areas studied are: (1) Cogeneration potential in the SCE service territory; (2) Advanced cogeneration technologies; and (3) Existing cogeneration computer models. An estimated 3700 MW sub E could potentially be generated from existing industries in the Southern California Edison service territory using cogeneration technology. Of this total, current technology could provide 2600 MW sub E and advanced technology could provide 1100 MW sub E. The manufacturing sector (SIC Codes 20-39) was found to have the highest average potential for current cogeneration technology. The mining sector (SIC Codes 10-14) was found to have the highest potential for advanced technology
