The literature concerning the influences on career and psychosocial functions of mentoring are inconsistent concerning formality (formal vs. informal initiation of the mentoring relationship), inconsistent concerning gender composition of the dyad, non-existent concerning the effect of the mentor and protégé being in the same or different organisations, but consistent concerning the effect of supervisory status, namely that mentors who supervise their protégés provide more career assistance than non-supervisory mentors. In order to see if the level of career and/or psychosocial assistance was different depending on formality of the mentoring relationship, gender composition of the mentoring relationship, and organisational distance between the mentor and protégé, a 198-item questionnaire was sent to 954 senior and executive New Zealand business people. Twenty seven percent returned questionnaires reporting on developmental relationships either as a mentor, a protégé, or other relationships. No female mentors with male protégés were analysed because of their paucity. In the analysis of data from 115 mentors it was found that career assistance was rated as more important than psychosocial assistance in determining impact on a protégé's career. It was found that the overall level of career assistance was affected by (a) the gender composition of the mentoring relationship and (b) whether the mentor was in the same organisation as the protégé. The overall level of psychosocial assistance was affected by (a) the gender composition of the mentoring relationship. The level of career and psychosocial assistance was not affected by (a) whether the mentor was a protégé's supervisor or not, or (b) whether the relationship was formal or informal in its initiation. Results suggest that (a) both male and female protégés should select (b) male mentors from (c) the same organisation for maximal (d) career and (e) psychosocial assistance. That nine covariates were used can account for the discrepancy in results with previous studies. A hypothesis for Protégé Influence is formulated and found to be superior to previous hypotheses of Mentor Power and Mentor Risk in accounting for differences in career-and psychosocial-assistance behaviour of mentors

The Challenge Program: A Quantitative Analysis of Strategies Designed to Eliminate the Achievement Gap

The achievement gap is one of the most daunting challenges educators face in U.S. schools today. Researchers have identified many factors that contribute to the persistence of this gap in public schools. Family backgrounds, cultural environment, and socioeconomic status appear to be the main environmental factors perpetuating the achievement gap. A review of literature also revealed poor quality teachers, ineffective school leadership, course tracking in high schools, and a lack of parental involvement were the main school factors identified. This quantitative study examined one public high school’s effort to reduce the achievement gap between African American students and Caucasian students. This high school created a voluntary program known as the Challenge Program. African American students in grades 9 through 12 actively worked with administrators, teachers and parents to reduce the existing gap. Multiple strategies within this program were implemented to support ongoing academic success among the Challenge students. Quantitative analysis of cumulative GPA, End of Course (EOC) exam scores in English II and American History, and ACT scores between Challenge students, Caucasian students, and non-Challenge African American students in the graduating class of 2012 were completed to determine if the program was effective in reducing the achievement gap. Data analysis confirmed Caucasian students attending this high school continued to have higher achievement. While multiple tests provided mixed results, ztests for differences in means and t-tests for differences in means assuming unequal variances revealed Challenge students had higher achievement levels compared to non- Challenge African American students when analyzing cumulative GPA and EOC exam iii scores in English II. These results indicate the Challenge Program has made some progress in reducing the achievement gap at this high school. This research involved an analysis of measurable achievement data for the students in the graduating class of 2012 at this high school. Continued analysis of performance data and a qualitative study of student and staff perceptions of the Challenge Program would be important to fully evaluate the program’s success

Trickster chases the tale of education

The research story is a narrative woven of [the author's] own self reflections, the voice of the co-researchers, and traditional Mi'kmaw story characters. The story follows a group of community members from Wildcat First Nation and staff members from the North Queens School as we collaborate and learn initially through a salmon project based in the community and then through the implementation of a native studies course in the school. Both initiatives reflect our efforts to center and legitimate Mi'kmaw knowledge in the school. As the work progressed, we were repairing and strengthening the threads of interconnectivity between people involved in the project and between people and other life of the land

Making A Difference: Year Two Report of the Pennsylvania High School Coaching Initiative

    Get PDF
This report examines the implementation of the second year of three for the Pennsylvania High School Coaching Initiative (PAHSCI). Funded by the Annenberg Foundation, this initiative focuses on literacy and math coaches providing support to teachers from across the major subject areas to create literacy-rich classrooms in which students actively engage in learning tasks that deepen their content knowledge and strengthen their abilities to think critically and communicate well. This report presents findings from the first two years of research. It includes survey research as well as in-depth qualitative research in participating schools and districts and provides recommendations for PAHSCI stakeholders as they refine the program and for other education reformers as they consider the benefits of instructional coaching as a strategy for improving high schools and student achievement
