The evolution of a national research plan for computers in education in The Netherlands

    Get PDF
This paper describes the evolution of a national research plan for computers and education in The Netherlands. This approach was initiated in 1983 and includes two phases: one from 1984 until 1988 and one from 1989 until 1992. The paper describes the research plans for the second phase, based upon the experiences of the first, and draws some general conclusions about the development of national research plans for computers in education

The influence of polydispersity and inhomogeneity on EXAFS of bimetallic catalysts

The effect of polydispersity and inhomogeneity of supported bimetallic catalysts on the EXAFS analysis is investigated with some simple model calculations. These show that EXAFS is very insensitive to polydispersity. Polydispersity and inhomogeneous distribution of the metals over the particles however have only limited influence on the ability to distinguish between core-shell particles and particles with random distribution of both metals

Utility based cross-layer collaboration for speech enhancement in wireless acoustic sensor networks

A wireless acoustic sensor network is considered that is used to estimate a desired speech signal that has been corrupted by noise. The application layer of the WASN derives an optimal filter in a linear MMSE sense. A utility function is then used in conjunction with the MMSE estimate in order to evaluate the most significant signal components from each node in the system. The utility values are used as a cross-layer link between the application layer and the network layer so the nodes transmit the signal components that are deemed most relevant to the estimate while adhering to the power constraints of the system. The simulation results show that a high signal-to-error and signal-to-noise ratio is still achievable while transmitting a subset of signal components

A Continuous-Discontinuous Approach to Simulate Heat Transfer in Fractured Media

    Get PDF
A macroscopic framework to model heat transfer in materials and composites, subjected to physical degradation, is proposed. The framework employs the partition of unity concept and captures the change from conduction-dominated transfer in the initial continuum state to convection and radiation-dominated transfer in the damaged state. The underlying model can be directly linked to a mechanical cohesive zone model, governing the initiation and subsequent growth and coalescence of micro-cracks. The methodology proved to be applicable for quasi-static, periodic, and transient problem
