    Pseudogap and incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6. 6}

    Unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering is used to study the temperature and wave vector dependence of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility, χ′′(q,ω)\chi''(q,\omega), of a well characterized single crystal YBa2Cu3O6.6YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6} (Tc=62.7T_c=62.7 K). We find that a pseudogap opens in the spin fluctuation spectrum at temperatures well above TcT_c. We speculate that the appearance of the low frequency incommensurate fluctuations is associated with the opening of the pseudogap.     Application of the nonlinear vortex-lattice concept to aircraft-interference problems

    A discrete-vortex model was developed to account for the hazardous effects of the vortex trail issued from the edges of separation of a large leading wing on a small trailing wing. The model is divided into three main parts: the leading wing and its near wake, the near and far wakes of the leading wing, and the trailing wing and the portion of the far wake in its vicinity. The normal force, pitching moment, and rolling moment coefficients for the trailing wing are calculated. The circulation distribution in the vortex trail is calculated in the first part of the model where the leading wing is far upstream and hence is considered isolated. A numerical example is solved to demonstrate the feasibility of using this method to study interference between aircraft. The numerical results show the correct trends: The following wing experiences a loss in lift between the wing-tip vortex systems of the leading wing, a gain outside this region, and strong rolling moments which can change sign as the lateral relative position changes.     Unsteady flow past wings having sharp-edge separation

    A vortex-lattice technique is developed to model unsteady, incompressible flow past thin wings. This technique predicts the shape of the wake as a function of time; thus, it is not restricted by planform, aspect ratio, or angle of attack as long as vortex bursting does not occur and the flow does not separate from the wing surface. Moreover, the technique can be applied to wings of arbitrary curvature undergoing general motion; thus, it can treat rigid-body motion, arbitrary wing deformation, gusts in the freestream, and periodic motions. Numerical results are presented for low-aspect rectangular wings undergoing a constant-rate, rigid-body rotation about the trailing edge. The results for the unsteady motion are compared with those predicted by assuming quasi-steady motion. The present results exhibit hysteretic behavior

    Distribution of the aphid Hyalopterus pruni Geoffr. within and between habitats of Common Reed Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel as a result of migration and population growth

    AbstractThe aphid Hyalopterus pruni migrates to its secondary host Common Reed in late spring and early summer. Reed fields are known to be more heavily infested at the edges compared to the centre, as the migrants are attracted to the colour of the reed. There is also evidence that reeds growing at wet sites are more heavily infested than at dry sites. This paper shows that both proceses interact in determining the distribution of aphids in different habitats.The observations were carried out in the vast reed field of the Zuidelijk Flevoland polder (The Netherlands) during a number of years after its reclamation in 1968. In the period of migration flying aphids were caught with sticky traps situated in and around the reed field. The distribution of aphids on the reed was determined at different times during the season along transects through the centre of the polder. The existence early in the season (June) of a higher infestation at the edges than in the centre of the field was confirmed. The density of winged aphids in this early period was higher in wet than in dry habitats, which may have been a result of a preference of the settling migrants for reed standing in water. Later in the season (August) the dry habitat still had a relatively low infestation in the centre, but at the wet sites the infestation was high everywhere. This could be attributed to the much quicker population growth that was found in the wet habitat and subsequent short range movement of newly born winged aphids

    Observation of Magnetic Order in a YBa2Cu3O6.6{\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}} Superconductor

    Polarized beam neutron scattering measurements on a highly perfect crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.6{\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}} show a distinct magnetic transition with an onset at about 235K, the temperature expected for the pseudogap transition. The moment is found to be about 0.1 μB\mu_B for each sublattice and have a correlation length of at least 75 \AA. We found the critical exponent for the magnetic neutron intensity to be 2β\beta =0.37±\pm 0.12. This is the proper range for the class of transition that has no specific heat divergence possibly explaining why none is found at the pseudogap transition.Comment: 3 figure
