    Affine extension of noncrystallographic Coxeter groups and quasicrystals

    Unique affine extensions H^{\aff}_2, H^{\aff}_3 and H^{\aff}_4 are determined for the noncrystallographic Coxeter groups H2H_2, H3H_3 and H4H_4. They are used for the construction of new mathematical models for quasicrystal fragments with 10-fold symmetry. The case of H^{\aff}_2 corresponding to planar point sets is discussed in detail. In contrast to the cut-and-project scheme we obtain by construction finite point sets, which grow with a model specific growth parameter.Comment: (27 pages, to appear in J. Phys. A

    Strangeness Suppression of q(q)over-bar Creation Observed in Exclusive Reactions

    We measured the ratios of electroproduction cross sections from a proton target for three exclusive meson-baryon final states: AK(+), p pi(0), and n pi(+), with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. Using a simplemodel of quark hadronization, we extract q (q) over bar creation probabilities for the first time in exclusive two-body production, in which only a single q (q) over bar pair is created. We observe a sizable suppression of strange quark-antiquark pairs compared to nonstrange pairs, similar to that seen in high-energy production

    Titanium is commonly added to nickel superalloys but has a well-documented detrimental effect on oxidation resistance. The present work constitutes the first atomistic-scale quantitative measurements of grain boundary and bulk compositions in the oxide scale of a current generation polycrystalline nickel superalloy performed through atom probe tomography. Titanium was found to be particularly detrimental to oxide scale growth through grain boundary diffusion

    Possible contractions of quantum orthogonal groups which correspond to different choices of primitive elements of Hopf algebra are considered and all allowed contractions in Cayley--Klein scheme are obtained.     The crystal structure of Pneumolysin at 2.0 Ă… resolution reveals the molecular packing of the pre-pore complex

    Pneumolysin is a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin (CDC) and virulence factor of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It kills cells by forming pores assembled from oligomeric rings in cholesterol-containing membranes. Cryo-EM has revealed the structures of the membrane-surface bound pre-pore and inserted-pore oligomers, however the molecular contacts that mediate these oligomers are unknown because high-resolution information is not available. Here we have determined the crystal structure of full-length pneumolysin at 1.98 Å resolution. In the structure, crystal contacts demonstrate the likely interactions that enable polymerisation on the cell membrane and the molecular packing of the pre-pore complex. The hemolytic activity is abrogated in mutants that disrupt these intermolecular contacts, highlighting their importance during pore formation. An additional crystal structure of the membrane-binding domain alone suggests that changes in the conformation of a tryptophan rich-loop at the base of the toxin promote monomer-monomer interactions upon membrane binding by creating new contacts. Notably, residues at the interface are conserved in other members of the CDC family, suggesting a common mechanism for pore and pre-pore assembly

    I will prove a recurrence theorem which says that any HsH^s (s>2s>2) solution to the 2D inviscid channel flow returns repeatedly to an arbitrarily small H0H^0 neighborhood. Periodic boundary condition is imposed along the stream-wise direction. The result is an extension of an early result of the author [Li, 09] on 2D Euler equation under periodic boundary conditions along both directions

    Effective Field Theory Program for Conformal Quantum Anomalies

    The emergence of conformal states is established for any problem involving a domain of scales where the long-range, SO(2,1) conformally invariant interaction is applicable. Whenever a clear-cut separation of ultraviolet and infrared cutoffs is in place, this renormalization mechanism produces binding in the strong-coupling regime.
