Conquering the Virtual Public': Jean-Paul Sartre's La tribune des temps modernes and the Radio in France

    Get PDF
On the evening of Monday, 21 October 1947, La Tribune de Paris – a daily radio programme that provided a forum for discussion and analysis of current events – gave over its nightly news review, from 8:30 to 8:50, to ‘Jean-Paul Sartre et ses collaborateurs’. This new programme, scheduled to run weekly on Monday evenings, was La tribune des temps modernes. Sartre’s ‘collaborateurs’ were a rotating group of fellow editors of his journal, Les temps modernes, for which the radio programme was named. They included Simone de Beauvoir and Maurice Merleau-Ponty as regulars, alongside important contributions from Jean Pouillon, Jean-Bertrand Pontalis and Alain Bonafé. Structured as a semiscripted discussion, La tribune des temps modernes ran in the regular weekly slot for six weeks, before being abruptly cancelled in December, following a controversial run and – probably crucially – a change of government

Diffraction from visible lattice points and k-th power free integers

    Get PDF
We prove that the set of visible points of any lattice of dimension at least 2 has pure point diffraction spectrum, and we determine the diffraction spectrum explicitly. This settles previous speculation on the exact nature of the diffraction in this situation, see math-ph/9903046 and references therein. Using similar methods we show the same result for the 1-dimensional set of k-th power free integers with k at least 2. Of special interest is the fact that neither of these sets is a Delone set --- each has holes of unbounded inradius. We provide a careful formulation of the mathematical ideas underlying the study of diffraction from infinite point sets.Comment: 45 pages, with minor corrections and improvements; dedicated to Ludwig Danzer on the occasion of his 70th birthda

Extending Continuum Models for Atom Probe Simulation

This work describes extensions to existing level-set algorithms developed for application within the field of Atom Probe Tomography (APT). We present a new simulation tool for the simulation of 3D tomographic volumes, using advanced level set methods. By combining narrow-band, B-Tree and particle-tracing approaches from level-set methods, we demonstrate a practical tool for simulating shape changes to APT samples under applied electrostatic fields, in three dimensions. This work builds upon our previous studies by allowing for non-axially symmetric solutions, with minimal loss in computational speed, whilst retaining numerical accuracy

The Constitution and the One-Sex College

These cases bring into sharp focus the question whether the Constitution permits government-sponsored institutions of higher learning on the basis of sex. Such institutions have a lengthy history in this country and, during the early years of the Republic, were the rule rather than the exception. Tradition, however, is not the test of constitutional permissibility

A Plan Of Work For The Neches-Sabine Soil Conservation District

At the present, the increased destruction of uncontrolled erosion far exceeds the rate of establishing corrective conservation measures. It exceeds it to such a degree as to require some sober thinking and planning on the subject. In the Neches-Sabine Soil Conservation District, we now have all of the land we will ever have. Every acre destroyed by erosion, every farm abandoned because soil fertility has been destroyed by erosion, means families cheated of a fair opportunity to make an American Standard of Living. The area was settled in 1840 when pioneers began to clear away the timber and bring the clearings under cultivation. No thought was given to erosion or its consequences. Erosion has progressively increased each year since the first settlers. The day of reckoning has come. We now find that out of approximately two billion acres representing the total area of the country, exclusive of urban and water territory, only about a quarter of this area has escaped erosion of some kind. It will take the coordinated effort of all to solve and overcome the erosion problem. It is a challenge which must be met. purpose. It is the purpose of this study to : 1. To determine the extent and damage caused by erosion in the district. 2. To create an awarness or felt need on the part of farmers to adapt good farm land management. Statement of the Problem. There exists in the Neches-Sabine Soil Conservation District a general misuse of the land. The farms are not being tilled according to their needs and adaptabilities. There is a definite need for erosion control and improved farming practices. Other familiar Studies. The writer was able to find very little literature dealing directly with the problem, however, a limited amount of research material was found and reviewed. Scope. Sources, and Methods of Obtaining Data. 1. This study covers all of Smith County and a portion of Van Zandt County. 2. The basic data for this study were obtained from soil survey reports, reports of the United States Weather Bureau, local experiment station, agronomy handbooks, and my personal experience as an employee in the Soil Conservation Service. 3. Field data were obtained by personal contact

Refining Triage Documentation Practices in a Metropolitan Emergency Department

    Get PDF
Problem California ranks ninth nationwide for its lengthy emergency department wait times, presenting a pressing challenge for healthcare facilities. Context This quality improvement project, set in the emergency department of a large urban hospital in the Bay Area, aimed to address this issue by targeting workflow efficiency through the reduction of triage times. Intervention The intervention centered on implementing changes to the triage documentation, informed by staff feedback obtained through an opinion survey. Proposed modifications included the elimination of redundant questions, consolidation of related categories, and a logical reorganization of triage topics. Measures Key measures utilized in the project included triage times and pre- and post-intervention nursing opinion surveys. Results Despite encountering time constraints and other limitations, the intervention was not fully implemented, and post-intervention data collection did not occur. However, pre-implementation surveys revealed strong staff support for the proposed changes, indicating the potential efficacy of the intervention. Conclusion Future recommendations for this project include prioritizing the implementation of the intervention and conducting post-implementation data collection to facilitate meaningful comparisons and further inform improvement efforts
