The Man in the Moone: Godwin¿s Narrative Experiment and the Scientific Revolution

In his innovative voyage to the Moon, Bishop Godwin, contrary to his Aristotelian forma- tion, portrayed the revolutionary cosmology of his age taking into account the equally revolutionary tenets of the historiography practiced by Camden. I shall argue that this celestial journey constituted a coherent response to the new scientific procedures of learn- ing and knowing. Godwin carefully selected the narrative elements to achieve an impres- sion of authenticity and named his hero after Domenico Gundisalvo to indicate a new stage in the development of human knowledge. The story, loosely introduced as an “essay of fancy,” explored serious topics, such as Godwin’s anthropological ideas in relation to extra- terrestrial societies or to the man of science conceived as the new Adam. It inaugurated a singular type of writing, whose normal evolution was truncated by a number of circum- stances, including the fact that it was believed to be a Spanish story.En su novedoso viaje a la Luna, el Obispo Godwin, traicionando su formación aristotélica, representó la revolucionaria cosmología de su época teniendo en cuenta los principios igualmente revolucionarios de la historiografía utilizada por Camden. Intentaré demostrar que este viaje espacial constituyó una reacción coherente con los nuevos métodos científicos del conocimiento y el saber. Godwin seleccionó cuidadosamente los elementos narrativos para conseguir dar la impresión de autenticidad y bautizó a su héroe con el nombre de Domenico Gundisalvo para señalar una nueva etapa en el desarrollo del conocimiento humano. El relato, denominado con la vaga fórmula de “ensayo fantástico,” analizaba asuntos muy serios para la época, como las ideas antropológicas de Godwin sobre las sociedades extraterrestres o el hombre de ciencia concebido como el nuevo Adán. “Un aperitivo para vuestro paladar”: forma narrativa, historia y género en Eliana. A New Romance

Eliana. A New Romance (1661), atribuido a Samuel Pordage, no atrajo la atención de los lectores en el momento de su publicación y sigue siendo uno de los romances de la Restauración menos estudiados. En 2007, Amelia Zurcher rescató la obra del olvido al analizar la noción de ‘interés’ en dos historias del romance, el cual describió como “mucho más convencional que menos.” A fin de ofrecer una introducción más completa y, de camino, sugerir algunos de los elementos “menos convencionales,” este artículo estudiará, entre otros aspectos, las estructuras diegéticas y de lectura, las técnicas narrativas más fidedignas y objetivas ideadas tanto para las voces intradiegéticas como para el narrador extradiegético, la extraordinaria combinación de ficción e historia antigua, la variedad de relaciones masculinas dentro del espectro homosocial-homosexual, y la defensa de la amistad como prototipo ideal de amor. Este artículo mostrará algunas estrategias empleadas por el joven Pordage en su intento de actualizar el género narrativo.Eliana. In 2007, Amelia Zurcher rescued it from oblivion by exploring the notion of ‘interest’ in two stories within this “more rather than less conventional” romance. In order to introduce it further and, in the process, suggest some of its “less conventional” aspects, this essay will focus, among other issues, on the diegetic and readerly structures, the strategies to reinforce the reliability of both the intradiegetic narrators and the extradiegetic voice, the remarkable combination of fiction and ancient history, the male relationships in the homosocial-homosexual spectrum, and the extolling of friendship as the ideal prototype of love. This essay may ultimately show some of the ways in which young Pordage tried to modernise the art of fiction

Reconstrucción con colgajo fronto-nasal en mordedura humana

Introduction: for many centuries the face has represented the main focus of appearance. The middle facial third, which includes the nose, lower eyelids and the mid-corner area, is the most important area of the face and is therefore extremely vulnerable to posttraumatic facial deformities.Clinical case: a 44-year-old male patient with no known medical history, consults with the Emergency Department of the Dr. Leon Cuervo Rubio Hospital of Pinar del Río for human bite after aggression, resulting in loss of the right nasal wing, with cartilage involvement and without any treatment. We present clinical aspects related to this case, as well as the type of surgical treatment used for it.Conclusions: the frontal flap is considered a first-line reconstructive option in the treatment of extensive cutaneous nasal defects. Using tissues with similar characteristics of texture and color allows to offer a wide skin coverage, which makes the fronto-nasal flap especially useful in repairing the nasal wing lost by accident or tumor cause. Introducción: la cara por muchos siglos ha representado el principal centro de atención de la apariencia. El tercio medio facial, que incluye la nariz, los párpados inferiores y el área del canto medio, es el área más importante de la cara y es por lo tanto extremadamente vulnerable a las deformidades faciales postraumáticas.Caso clínico: paciente de 44 años, sexo masculino, sin antecedentes patológicos conocidos, consulta al servicio de urgencias del Hospital Provincial Clínico-Quirúrgico Docente Dr. León Cuervo Rubio de Pinar del Río por mordedura humana, tras agresión, que resultó en pérdida del ala nasal derecha, con compromiso del cartílago y sin haber recibido tratamiento alguno. Se exponen aspectos clínicos relacionados con este caso, así como la modalidad de tratamiento quirúrgico empleado para el mismo.Conclusiones: se considera el colgajo frontal, una opción reconstructiva de primera línea en el tratamiento de defectos nasales cutáneos extensos. Utilizar tejidos de similares características de textura y color permite ofrecer una cobertura cutánea amplia, lo que hace al colgajo fronto-nasal especialmente útil a la hora de reparar el ala nasal pérdida por accidente o de causa tumoral.REHABILITACIÓN; COLGAJO MIOCUTÁNEO; HERIDAS Y TRAUMATISMOS; MORDEDURAS HUMANAS

La formación de recursos humanos de la salud en la provincia a través de la universalización de la enseñanza / Formation of the Human Resources in the Health Branches in Pinar del Rio province trough the Universalization of Learning

El presente trabajo consiste en dar a conocer todo lo relacionado con la estructura organizativa, matrícula de estudiantes, número de profesores, fuentes de ingreso, modelo pedagógico vigente y especificidad de la provincia de Pinar del Río. Se expresa el reto principal, las proyecciones futuras y los retos y las perspectivas de nuestra Universidad Médica con respecto a la Universalización de la Educación Superior. En él se emplean veintiuna (21) referencias. Enfatizamos en que la elevación de los niveles de vida exige perfeccionar la formación académica de cada uno de los miembros de la sociedad. Ello puede lograrse solamente mediante programas de educación de masas. Esta experiencia única en Cuba, cada día constata resultados superiores. Palabras clave: Educación, Salud, Universalización ABSTRACTThis study was aimed at showing all the aspects related to the organization and structure of the universalization of learning, registration, and numbers of professors, sources of access, current pedagogical model and specificities in Pinar del Rio province. The main challenge, future expectations and perspectives of the Medical University related to the Universalization of Learning in Higher Education were also analyzed. Twenty one bibliographic references were considered, emphasizing that the elevation of the levels of life demands to perfect the academic formation of each of the members in the society, being only possible through a popular education. Factors associated with primary multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in patients from Callao, Peru

Introducción: En el Perú, Lima y Callao constituyen regiones con riesgo alto de transmisión activa de tuberculosis. La tuberculosis multidrogorresistente se presenta en el 5,54% de los casos nuevos de tuberculosis pulmonar (TB MDR primaria) en Lima y Callao. Sus factores de riesgo no han sido estudiados en pacientes del Callao. Objetivos: Determinar los factores de riesgo para TB MDR primaria en pacientes atendidos en centros de salud de Callao, durante los años 2009- 2010. Diseño: Estudio caso control. Lugar: Centros de Salud de Callao. Participantes: Participaron 29 pacientes con TB MDR primaria y 37 con tuberculosis sensible, según los registros del Programa de Control de Tuberculosis y las historias clínicas ubicadas en los centros de salud. Intervenciones: Toda la información fue obtenida de fuentes secundarias. En el análisis bivariado se calculó el OR de cada covariable. Para el cálculo de los OR multivariados se utilizó modelos de regresión logística. Principales medidas de resultados: Factores de riesgo para TB MDR. Resultados: En el análisis bivariado, el haber tenido contacto con pacientes TB MDR o XDR fue un factor de riesgo significativo (OR: 5,56; IC95%: 1,05 a 29,27); lo mismo se demostró en el análisis multivariado (OR: 14,56; IC95%: 1,52 a 139,54). Además, en el análisis multivariado, la variable edad ≥ 40 años mostró ser un factor protector significativo (OR: 0,94; IC95%: 0,90 a 0,99). Conclusiones: El tener contacto con pacientes TB MDR/XDR fue factor de riesgo y una edad menor a 40 años un factor protector para contraer TB MDR primaria en los pacientes del Callao estudiados.Introduction: Lima and Callao are high risk areas for tuberculosis active transmission in Peru. Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis represents 5.54% of the new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (primary MDR-TB) in Lima and Callao. Involved risk factors have not been studied in patients from Callao. Objectives: To determine risk factors for primary MDR-TB in patients attending health care facilities in Callao during 2009-2010. Design: Case-control study. Setting: Health care facilities from Callao. Participants: Twenty nine primary MDR-TB patients and 37 drug-sensitive TB patients were studied through assessment of the Tuberculosis Control Program Registries and healthcare facilities’ clinical records. Interventions: Information was obtained from secondary sources. Odds-ratios were calculated by bivariate analysis. Logistic regression models were used to calculate multivariate odd-ratios. Main outcome measures: Risk factors for primary MDR-TB. Results: Prior contact with a MDR-TB or XDR-TB patient was a significant risk factor (OR: 5.56; 95%CI: 1.05-29.27) in bivariate analysis; the same was found in multivariate analysis (OR: 14.56; 95%CI: 1.52–139.54). Being 40 or more years old was a significant protective factor in multivariate analysis (OR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.90–0.99). Conclusions: Previous contact with a MDR-TB or XDR-TB patient was a risk factor, and being 40 or more years old was a protective factor for primary MDR-TB in Callao patients studied
