Dynamical instability in kicked Bose-Einstein condensates: Bogoliubov resonances

Bose-Einstein condensates subject to short pulses (`kicks') from standing waves of light represent a nonlinear analogue of the well-known chaos paradigm, the quantum kicked rotor. Previous studies of the onset of dynamical instability (ie exponential proliferation of non-condensate particles) suggested that the transition to instability might be associated with a transition to chaos. Here we conclude instead that instability is due to resonant driving of Bogoliubov modes. We investigate the excitation of Bogoliubov modes for both the quantum kicked rotor (QKR) and a variant, the double kicked rotor (QKR-2). We present an analytical model, valid in the limit of weak impulses which correctly gives the scaling properties of the resonances and yields good agreement with mean-field numerics.Comment: 8 page

Mitochondria: role in ischemia, reperfusion and cell death

    Get PDF
Recent advances in the knowledge of the biochemical basis of myocardial ischemia have enabled a better understanding of the complex sequence of events occurring in ischemic cardiomyopathy, whatever its manifestations. This has clearly highlighted the important role played by cardiac mitochondria in these events. At first only associated with energy production, mitochondria have been clearly shown to have other important functions, like the maintenance of calcium homeostasis, as well as ischemic and non-ischemic preconditioning, and also modulation of cellular life and death. The aims of this review are twofold: firstly, to review the current knowledge on mitochondrial morphology and structure, and how these can be affected by ischemia and ischemia-reperfusion; and secondly, to summarize the role of cardiac mitochondria in cardioprotection and modulation of cell death mechanisms

BitTorrent based transmission of real-time scalable video over P2P networks

The number of software applications available on the Internet for distributing video streams in real time over P2P networks has grown quickly in the last two years. Typical this kind of distribution is made by television channel broadcasters which try to make their content globally available, using viewer's resources to support a large scale distribution of video without incurring in incremental costs. However, the lack of adaptation in video quality, combined with the lack of a standard protocol for this kind of multimedia distribution has driven content providers to basically ignore it as a solution for video delivery over the Internet. While the scalable extension of the H.264 encoding (H.264/SVC) can be used to support terminal and network heterogeneity, it is not clear how it can be integrated in a P2P overlay to form a large scale and real time distribution. In this paper, we start by defining a solution that combines the most popular P2P file-sharing protocol, the Bit Torrent, with the H.264/SVC encoding for a real-time video content delivery. Using this solution we then evaluate the effect of several parameters in the quality received by peers

Prognostic value of CA125 in advanced heart failure patients

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Serum levels of CA125 are often high in advanced heart failure (AHF) patients. AIM: To determine the predictive value of CA125 in forecasting the occurrence of death or cardiac transplantation in an AHF population. METHODS: 88 AHF patients referred for heart transplantation were divided into 2 groups based on CA125 levels: normal (CA125/=38 U/mL). Events (death or heart transplant) were monitored over a period of 13+/-7 months after CA125 determination. RESULTS: Patients with elevated CA125 (n=65) had significantly lower blood pressure, body mass index, serum sodium and peak exercise oxygen consumption, while B-type natriuretic peptide levels were significantly higher. The combined primary endpoint (death or heart transplant) rate was 39.4% and 62.3% in normal and elevated CA125 groups, respectively (p=0.029). Multivariate regression analysis showed that CA125 and sodium levels were the only independent predictors of the combined endpoint. CONCLUSION: In AHF patients, plasma CA125 was an effective prognostic marker. Its determination may contribute to better risk stratification in this population

    Semiclassical description of resonant tunneling

We derive a semiclassical formula for the tunneling current of electrons trapped in a potential well which can tunnel into and across a wide quantum well. The calculations idealize an experimental situation where a strong magnetic field tilted with respect to an electric field is used. The resulting semiclassical expression is written as the sum over special periodic orbits which hit both walls of the quantum well and are perpendicular to the first wall.Comment: LaTeX, 8 page
