Nas condições de armazenamento de sementes, a temperatura do ar é um fator fundamental para a manutenção da qualidade fisiológica das mesmas (TONIN & PEREZ, 2006). Porém, quanto mais elevada a temperatura, maior a taxa metabólica das sementes ocasionando perda de qualidade, em decorrência desse aumento, sendo este, um dos maiores problemas enfrentados pelos agricultores, principalmente nas regiões tropicais, onde as temperaturas e a umidade do ar são bastante elevadas (BILIA et al., 1994).Após o período de armazenamento, para que ocorra a germinação das sementes vários fatores externos e intrínsecos a elas são necessários para gerar condições favoráveis para que o processo se inicie e permita a retomada do crescimento do embrião. Entre os fatores externos mais importantes, destacam- se a água, a temperatura e o oxigênio e entre os internos, que a semente esteja viva e não dormente (CARVALHO & NAKAGAWA, 2000).Dos fatores que podem afetar a germinação e consequentemente a emergência das plântulas, a temperatura pode ser a mais importante, uma vez que nem sempre o produtor tem o total controle sobre este fator. Cada espécie apresenta temperatura mínima, máxima e ótima para a germinação das sementes e dentro desta, podem existir diferenças marcantes entre as cultivares quanto à germinação (NASCIMENTO, 2000).Temperaturas muito baixas ou muito altas poderão alterar tanto a velocidade quanto a porcentagem final de germinação. Geralmente, temperaturas baixas reduzem a velocidade de germinação, enquanto temperaturas altas aumentam (NASCIMENTO, 2000).A redução na qualidade é, em geral, traduzida pelo decréscimo na percentagem de germinação, aumento de plântulas anormais e redução no vigor das plântulas (TOLEDO et al., 2009). De acordo com Demito & Afonso (2009), a redução da temperatura é uma técnica economicamente viável para preservar qualidade de sementes armazenadas.Para atender à logística de produção e comercialização de alimentos, a armazenagem dos produtos agrícolas é uma excelente alternativa. Desta forma, informações a respeito do comportamento das sementes diante das prováveis condições climáticas que ocorrem durante o armazenamento, podem auxiliar na tomada de decisão sobre o armazenamento do produto com base na relação custo- benefício, decorrente de possíveis perdas de qualidade na estocagem. A temperatura e a umidade relativa são fatores determinantes no processo de perda de viabilidade de sementes durante o armazenamento e alterações na qualidade do produto e, em contrapartida, dos subprodutos (KONG, 2008; MALAKER, 2008).O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de milho submetidas a armazenamento em câmara fria ± 5oC e em temperatura ambiente durante vários períodos, (de setembro de 2019 a agosto de 2020.
