    Egyptian priests in Ptolemaic Tebtunis: Administration, associations, and economy

    This thesis provides an overview and interpretation of the available documentary evidence and its material context concerning the temple of Soknebtunis in Tebtunis during the Ptolemaic period. This study comes at a time when new excavations and new projects for major collections are on the verge of considerably multiplying the amount of evidence. While the accumulation of data is welcome, it is also necessary to re-evaluate the Tebtunis papyri housed in the Cairo Museum, which have been largely neglected since they were catalogued in 1908. Based primarily on this evidence, the thesis outlines the temple personnel, including their administrative and professional duties, while attempting to illustrate the social and economic relationships of the temple of Soknebtunis with local cult associations and with a prominent family in the village. The first chapter addresses the relationship of the Tebtunis papyri to their archaeological context through an overview of excavations and of projects to publish texts. The second chapter sketches some basic features of temple organization by analyzing priestly titles and the activities of their holders. The third chapter tries to establish the role of formal associations for social and cult gatherings in the temple community. The fourth chapter attempts to determine the social status and economic basis of a family of priests over the second and first centuries BC. Although the publication of new data may necessitate future revisions, this study provides a framework for the organization of the temple of Soknebtunis in the Ptolemaic period

    Freezing line of the Lennard-Jones fluid: a Phase Switch Monte Carlo study

    We report a Phase Switch Monte Carlo (PSMC) method study of the freezing line of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid. Our work generalizes to soft potentials the original application of the method to hard sphere freezing, and builds on a previous PSMC study of the LJ system by Errington (J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 120}, 3130 (2004)). The latter work is extended by tracing a large section of the Lennard-Jones freezing curve, the results for which we compare to a previous Gibbs-Duhem integration study. Additionally we provide new background regarding the statistical mechanical basis of the PSMC method and extensive implementation details.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Modeling spontaneous formation of precursor nanoparticles in clear-solution zeolite synthesis

    We present a lattice model describing the formation of silica nanoparticles in the early stages of the clear-solution templated synthesis of silicalite-1 zeolite. Silica condensation/hydrolysis is modeled by a nearest-neighbor attraction, while the electrostatics are represented by an orientation-dependent, short-range interaction. Using this simplified model, we show excellent qualitative agreement with published experimental observations. The nanoparticles are identified as a metastable state, stabilized by electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged silica surface and a layer of organic cations. Nanoparticle size is controlled mainly by the solution pH, through nanoparticle surface charge. The size and concentration of the charge-balancing cation are found to have a negligible effect on nanoparticle size. Increasing the temperature allows for further particle growth by Ostwald ripening. We suggest that this mechanism may play a role in the growth of zeolite crystals

    Regular Incidence Complexes, Polytopes, and C-Groups

    Regular incidence complexes are combinatorial incidence structures generalizing regular convex polytopes, regular complex polytopes, various types of incidence geometries, and many other highly symmetric objects. The special case of abstract regular polytopes has been well-studied. The paper describes the combinatorial structure of a regular incidence complex in terms of a system of distinguished generating subgroups of its automorphism group or a flag-transitive subgroup. Then the groups admitting a flag-transitive action on an incidence complex are characterized as generalized string C-groups. Further, extensions of regular incidence complexes are studied, and certain incidence complexes particularly close to abstract polytopes, called abstract polytope complexes, are investigated.Comment: 24 pages; to appear in "Discrete Geometry and Symmetry", M.     Phase coexistence of cluster crystals: beyond the Gibbs phase rule

    We report a study of the phase behavior of multiple-occupancy crystals through simulation. We argue that in order to reproduce the equilibrium behavior of such crystals it is essential to treat the number of lattice sites as a constraining thermodynamic variable. The resulting free-energy calculations thus differ considerably from schemes used for single-occupancy lattices. Using our approach, we obtain the phase diagram and the bulk modulus for a generalized exponential model that forms cluster crystals at high densities. We compare the simulation results with existing theoretical predictions. We also identify two types of density fluctuations that can lead to two sound modes and evaluate the corresponding elastic constants.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Randomized controlled trial of patient-controlled sedation for colonoscopy: Entonox vs modified patient-maintained target-controlled propofol

    Aim Propofol sedation is often associated with deep sedation and decreased manoeuvrability. Patient-maintained sedation has been used in such patients with minimal side-effects. We aimed to compare novel modified patient-maintained target-controlled infusion (TCI) of propofol with patient-controlled Entonox inhalation for colonoscopy in terms of analgesic efficacy (primary outcome), depth of sedation, manoeuvrability and patient and endoscopist satisfaction (secondary outcomes). Method One hundred patients undergoing elective colonoscopy were randomized to receive either TCI propofol or Entonox. Patients in the propofol group were administered propofol initially to achieve a target concentration of 1.2 μ g/ml and then allowed to self-administer a bolus of propofol (200 μ g/kg/ml) using a patient-controlled analgesia pump with a handset. Entonox group patients inhaled the gas through a mouthpiece until caecum was reached and then as required. Sedation was initially given by an anaesthetist to achieve a score of 4 (Modified Observer's Assessment of Alertness and Sedation Scale), and colonoscopy was then started. Patients completed an anxiety score (Hospital Anxiety and Depression questionnaire), a baseline letter cancellation test and a pain score on a 100-mm visual analogue scale before and after the procedure. All patients completed a satisfaction survey at discharge and 24 h postprocedure. Results The median dose of propofol was 174 mg, and the median number of propofol boluses was four. There was no difference between the two groups in terms of pain recorded (95% confidence interval of the difference -0.809, 5.02) and patient/endoscopist satisfaction. There was no difference between the two groups in either depth of sedation or manoeuvrability. Conclusion Both Entonox and the modified TCI propofol provide equally effective sedation and pain relief, simultaneously allowing patients to be easily manoeuvred during the procedures. © 2010 The Authors.     Molecular genetic and physical analysis of gas vesicles in buoyant enterobacteria.

    Different modes of bacterial taxis play important roles in environmental adaptation, survival, colonization and dissemination of disease. One mode of taxis is flotation due to the production of gas vesicles. Gas vesicles are proteinaceous intracellular organelles, permeable only to gas, that enable flotation in aquatic niches. Gene clusters for gas vesicle biosynthesis are partially conserved in various archaea, cyanobacteria, and some proteobacteria, such as the enterobacterium, Serratia sp. ATCC 39006 (S39006). Here we present the first systematic analysis of the genes required to produce gas vesicles in S39006, identifying how this differs from the archaeon Halobacterium salinarum. We define 11 proteins essential for gas vesicle production. Mutation of gvpN or gvpV produced small bicone gas vesicles, suggesting that the cognate proteins are involved in the morphogenetic assembly pathway from bicones to mature cylindrical forms. Using volumetric compression, gas vesicles were shown to comprise 17% of S39006 cells, whereas in Escherichia coli heterologously expressing the gas vesicle cluster in a deregulated environment, gas vesicles can occupy around half of cellular volume. Gas vesicle production in S39006 and E. coli was exploited to calculate the instantaneous turgor pressure within cultured bacterial cells; the first time this has been performed in either strain.The authors would like to thank Professor Tony Walsby (Emeritus, Bristol university) for advice, technical help and donation of the pressure nephelometry and volumetric calculation apparatus.     Using sonic anemometer temperature to measure sensible heat flux in strong winds

    Sonic anemometers simultaneously measure the turbulent fluctuations of vertical wind (<i>w</i>') and sonic temperature (<i>T</i><sub>s</sub>'), and are commonly used to measure sensible heat flux (<i>H</i>). Our study examines 30-min heat fluxes measured with a Campbell Scientific CSAT3 sonic anemometer above a subalpine forest. We compared <i>H</i> calculated with <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> to <i>H</i> calculated with a co-located thermocouple and found that, for horizontal wind speed (<i>U</i>) less than 8 m s<sup>−1</sup>, the agreement was around ±30 W m<sup>−2</sup>. However, for <i>U</i> ≈ 8 m s<sup>−1</sup>, the CSAT <i>H</i> had a generally positive deviation from <i>H</i> calculated with the thermocouple, reaching a maximum difference of ≈250 W m<sup>−2</sup> at <i>U</i> ≈ 18 m s<sup>−1</sup>. With version 4 of the CSAT firmware, we found significant underestimation of the speed of sound and thus <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> in high winds (due to a delayed detection of the sonic pulse), which resulted in the large CSAT heat flux errors. Although this <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> error is qualitatively similar to the well-known fundamental correction for the crosswind component, it is quantitatively different and directly related to the firmware estimation of the pulse arrival time. For a CSAT running version 3 of the firmware, there does not appear to be a significant underestimation of <i>T</i><sub>s</sub>; however, a <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> error similar to that of version 4 may occur if the CSAT is sufficiently out of calibration. An empirical correction to the CSAT heat flux that is consistent with our conceptual understanding of the <i>T</i><sub>s</sub> error is presented. Within a broader context, the surface energy balance is used to evaluate the heat flux measurements, and the usefulness of side-by-side instrument comparisons is discussed
