Occurrence and management of oak in southern Swedish forests

This article describes the current proportions of forest types with oak (Quercus robur and Q. petraea) in southern Sweden, provides an overview of oak distribution over time and reviews literature about oak regeneration relevant for the region. Further we discuss silvicultural possibilities to maintain and promote oak in Scandinavia. In Götaland pure oak forest covers 1% of the forest area and mixed forest types with > 10% oak proportion cover approximately 10% of the area. Common types of mixture are spruce-oak and pine-oak forest. Both mixtures are frequent in mature forest, especially pine-oak. Additionally, about one third of spruce-oak mixtures can be found in medium-aged forest. Intensive management would be necessary to promote single oak trees in old pine stands or spruce plantations, but the proportion of oak in coniferous forest provides some potential to maintain additional oak trees. The distribution of acorns by Jays, enhanced measures against browsing, and the release of single oak trees from competing tree species could help to maintain more oak trees for nature conservation. However, regarding management of oak for timber production, conventional methods are recommended. Planting after clear cutting of coniferous forest, or short shelter periods after mast years in oak stands, are established methods to regenerate pure oak stands. Another possibility to develop mature oak forest are mixed oak-spruce plantations, as traditionally practised in a small region in southern Sweden. Performance and parasitosis in heifers grazing mixed with sows

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of mixed grazing with first season heifers and pregnant sows on animal performance, gastro-intestinal helminths, pasture quality and sward structure during three grazing seasons. This presentation will focus on results from 1999, primarily regarding performance and parasitosis in heifers. There have been no earlier reports on such mixed grazing systems. Three grazing systems were studied in replicate: 1) Heifers grazing alone; 2) sows grazing alone; 3) heifers grazing together with sows. The heifers were inoculated with low doses of infective O.ostertagi larvae at turn-out. Continuous grazing was practised in paddocks regulated in size according to herbage allowance. Individual weight gain, faecal egg output and serum pepsinogen concentrations - as indicator of O.ostertagi infection - were measured fortnightly. The sward structure and quality were greatly influenced by the applied grazing system. The average daily gain of the heifers was significantly higher (P=0.0006) when grazing together with sows (1,121±45 g/day, n=16) than when grazing alone (869±48 g/day, n=14). The mean pepsinogen concentrations were elevated in the heifers grazing alone. Copepods dominate the mesozooplankton spring-summer community in a South Norwegian fjord

Master's thesis in Coastal ecology (BIO501)In this study the seasonality of the mesozooplankton community in spring and summer of 2019 at Midtfjordsskjær (MFS), South Norway, was investigated. Zooplankton samples were collected using a fine mesh sized plankton net (60 μm) and zooplankton were identified by microscopy based on 5 ml subsamples. Total zooplankton abundance ranged from 754 –1620 ind. m-3and peak abundance was found in May.
