Buccinanops globulosus and Trophon geversianus are high and low sensitive to TBT. LD50 was 5.41 and 6.21 μgTBT.g-1bw for B. globulosus and T. geversianus respectively, denoting high resistance to TBT acute exposure. These results can be used for future imposex induction experiments.Buccinanops globulosus y Trophon geversianus son indicadores de alta y baja sensibilidad al TBT. Introducing adolescent livelihoods training in the slums of Allahabad, India

    Get PDF
While all adolescents in India face a rapidly changing economic environment, girls’ life choices are very different from boys’. Girls are much less likely to be engaged in economic activities, and when young women do participate in income-generating activities, it is often in unremunerated home-based work. Even when young women are paid for their labor, they may not retain control of their income. The Population Council and its partners are promoting a “livelihoods approach” that aims to expand the decision-making power of young women by building social networks and developing financial and income-generating capacities. This approach attempts to provide technical and life skills and to transform the ways girls view themselves and are perceived by the community. In 2001, the Council teamed with CARE-India to develop a pilot project for adolescent girls in the urban slums of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. The pilot integrated livelihoods activities for adolescent girls into CARE’s reproductive health program for slum dwellers. Optic radiation structure and anatomy in the normally developing brain determined using diffusion MRI and tractography

    Get PDF
The optic radiation (OR) is a component of the visual system known to be myelin mature very early in life. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and its unique ability to reconstruct the OR in vivo were used to study structural maturation through analysis of DTI metrics in a cohort of 90 children aged 5–18 years. As the OR is at risk of damage during epilepsy surgery, we measured its position relative to characteristic anatomical landmarks. Anatomical distances, DTI metrics and volume of the OR were investigated for age, gender and hemisphere effects. We observed changes in DTI metrics with age comparable to known trajectories in other white matter tracts. Left lateralization of DTI metrics was observed that showed a gender effect in lateralization. Sexual dimorphism of DTI metrics in the right hemisphere was also found. With respect to OR dimensions, volume was shown to be right lateralised and sexual dimorphism demonstrated for the extent of the left OR. The anatomical results presented for the OR have potentially important applications for neurosurgical planning

THE IMPACT OF BIG DATA ON THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL DICOURSE IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH

    Get PDF
The term Big Data is in the centre of many recent discussions in academia and practice. To date, the discussion is, to a large extent, driven by technological concepts and capabilities; however, a holistic understanding of the term is still missing. This panel intends to investigate the consequences and enabling prerequisites of Big Data. Next to economic and social impacts, the panel addresses questions that will raise issues that impact the academic discourse of Big Data itself

RXR Expression in Marine Gastropods with Different Sensitivity to Imposex Development

    Get PDF
The superposition of male sexual characteristics in female marine gastropods (imposex) represents one of the clearest ecological examples of organotin-mediated endocrine disruption. Recent evidences suggest that signaling pathways mediated by members of the nuclear receptor superfamily, RXR and PPARγ, are involved in the development of this pseudohermaphroditic condition. Here, we identified significant differences in RXR expression in two caenogastropod species from Nuevo Gulf, Argentina, Buccinanops globulosus and Trophon geversianus, which present clear contrast in imposex incidence. In addition, B. globulosus males from a polluted and an unpolluted area showed differences in RXR expression. Conversely, PPARγ levels were similar between both analyzed species. These findings indicate specie-specific RXR and PPARγ expression, suggesting a major role of RXR in the induction of imposex.Fil: Giulianelli, Sebastian Jesus. A Contribution of Beef to Human Health: A Review of the Role of the Animal Production Systems

    Get PDF
Meat and meat products constitute important source of protein, fat, and several functional compounds. Although beef consumption may implicate possible negative impacts on human health, its consumption can also contribute to human health. Quality traits of beef, as well as its nutritional properties, depend on animal genetics, feeding, livestock practices, and post mortem procedures. Available data show that emerging beef production systems are able to improve both, quality and nutritional traits of beef in a sustainable way. In this context, Argentina’s actions are aimed at maximising beef beneficial effects and minimising its negative impact on human health, in a way of contributing to global food security.Fil: Pighín, Darío Gabriel. The effect of a livelihoods intervention in an urban slum in India: Do vocational counseling and training alter the attitudes and behavior of adolescent girls?

    Get PDF
This Population Council working paper examines whether an experimental intervention for girls aged 14–19 that provided reproductive health information, vocational counseling and training, and assistance with opening savings accounts in slum areas of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, India had an effect on their attitudes and behaviors. Although the livelihoods program was acceptable to parents and feasible to implement, the project had only a minimal impact on the behavior and attitudes of adolescent girls in the experimental slums. The greatest changes between the baseline and the endline surveys were found in those outcomes that most closely reflected the content of the intervention. Girls exposed to the intervention were significantly more likely to have knowledge of safe spaces, be a member of a group, score higher on the social skills index, be informed about reproductive health, and spend time on leisure activities than were the matched control respondents. No effect was found on gender-role attitudes, mobility, self-esteem, work expectations, or on number of hours visiting friends, performing domestic chores, or engaging in labor-market work
