Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Biomarkers and Potential Therapeutic Targets

    Get PDF
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most frequent non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and carries with it a significant psychosocial and economic burden for both patients and health-care systems. Known risk factors for SCC include chronic ultraviolet (UV) exposure, chronic wounds and inflammation, exposure to certain chemicals and immunosuppression. The considerable risk of SCC recurrence and metastasis has driven the need for the discovery of new molecules that could explain the initiation and biological behavior of this type of NMSC. In this respect, proteomic research techniques have rapidly evolved and adapted in order to connect missing links and single out distinctive skin cancer biosignatures. Proteomic analysis of normal, dysplastic, and malignant keratinocytes appears to be promising in respect to SCC biomarker discovery, with the potential to aid in risk assessment, early detection, disease progression and development of novel targeted therapeutic agents. Identifying changes in the keratinocyte proteome pattern from normal to inflammatory and malignant cells will lead to the discovery of novel SCC biomarkers that could represent valuable tools for patient screening, diagnosis, management and follow-up

Structural Changes Associated with the Pseudoelastic Response of Fe-Based Shape Memory Alloys

The pseudoelastic responses of two types of iron base shape memory alloys (SMAs) were introduced and discussed. The former was based on Fe-Mn-Si system, obtained by classical (CM) and by powder metallurgy (PM) manufacturing. The latter was based on Fe-Ni-Co system being processed by a non conventional technology comprising melt spinning and heat treatment. In the case of FeMnSibased SMAs, CM specimens obviously experienced larger ductility and a more pronounced pseudoelastic response while PM specimens were stiffer and underwent larger work-hardening. On the other hand, melt spun FeNiCo-based SMAs revealed an outstanding superelasticity in the case of micro-indentation tests. By means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, a martensitic morphology was identified in FeMnSi-based SMAs while FeNiCo-based SMAs revealed an austenitic structure. The presence of both α’ and ε martensites was confirmed in FeMnSibased SMAs by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD). In fully austenitic melt-spun and aged FeNiCo-based SMAs, no martensite was indentified on XRD patterns. These results sustain the conclusion that FeMnSi-based SMAs, that contain pre-existing martensite, experienced a pseudoelastic behavior caused by crystallographic reorientation of martensite plate variants while austenitic FeNiCo-based SMAs experienced a reversible stress-induced martensitic transformation, at room temperature

Purpose – This paper considers the importance of external communication at the level of pre-university education institutions in Romania and aims to identify the aspects that disrupt the external communication process of educational institutions, on the one hand, and the aspects that have influenced the communication process during the pandemic and its consequences, on the other hand.

Methodology/Approach - The sampling method chosen was random sampling combined with purposive sampling for respondents from pre-university educational institutions. The questionnaire was applied to teachers in pre-university education.

Findings – The findings of this study revealed that the school formally establishes its communication relationship with its partners, but teachers are not specifically trained by the school through training programs. On the other hand, a problem of pressing topicality and complexity was not only the communication between the school and the higher institutions, but also that with the family or the community during the exceptional situation established in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research limitations/implications – The limitations of this research come from the fact that the answers collected are only from teachers whereas the family or community members' opinions are not captured.

Practical implications – These conclusions show that the school is the one that must reach an understanding of the different environments, experiences, values, cultures, religions and other factors that could affect the communication relationship with the family and the community. It is clear that the school staff also need communication skills for effective communication. The communication channel must be modern, efficient and as personal as possible.

Originality/value – The conclusions and recommendations may be used by representatives of educational institutions and could be part of the preparation for future potential crises and significantly contribute to improving management by developing effective communication skills.</p&gt
