    Impacts of Job Standardisation on Restaurant Frontline Employees: Mediating Effect of Emotional Labour

    Managers of food service operations standardise various aspects of operations to sustain consistent service quality. Frontline employees in these operations are expected to carry out tasks as per standards. Standards demand that frontline employees regulate their behaviours and emotions to complete their duties. Therefore, referring to the organisational role theory and the emotion regulation theory as the directing basis, this study examined the impact of job standardisation on emotional labour, as well as the effect of emotional labour on emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction of frontline employees in the hospitality sector. This study also examined the mediating effect of emotional labour on the relation between job standardisation, on one hand, and emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction on the other hand. The data collection was carried out in food service operations in Lebanon. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to assess the relations. The results showed that job standardisation negatively affected emotional labour and that emotional labour had a positive effect on emotional exhaustion and a negative effect on job satisfaction. Furthermore, emotional labour mediated the relation between job standardisation and emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. Practical and theoretical implications and directions for future research are also provided

    Observer-Based Suboptimal Controller Design for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors: State-Dependent Riccati Equation Controller and Impulsive Observer Approaches

    Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) with high energy efficiency, reliable performance, and a relatively simple structure are widely utilised in various applications. In this paper, a suboptimal controller is proposed for PMSMs without sensors based on the state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) technique combined with customised impulsive observers (IOs). Here, the SDRE technique facilitates a pseudo-linearised display of the motor with state-dependent coefficients (SDCs) while preserving all its nonlinear features. Considering the risk of non-available/non-measurable states in the motor due to sensor and instrumentation costs, the SDRE is combined with IOs to estimate the PMSM speed and position states. Customised IOs are proven to be capable of obtaining quality, continuous estimates of the motor states despite the discrete format of the output signals. The simulation results in this work illustrate an accurate state estimation and control mechanism for the speed of the PMSM in the presence of load torque disturbances and reference speed changes. It is clearly shown that the SDRE-IO design is superior compared to the most popular existing regulators in the literature for sensorless speed control

    Expression, Purification and Functional Assessment of Smallest Isoform of Human Interleukin-24 in Escherichia coli

    ABSTRACT Interleukin-24 (IL-24) is a novel tumor-suppressor gene that has different alternative splice isoforms. It has been shown that new smallest isoform of human IL-24 gene, lacking three exons, induces higher levels of cytotoxicity than all the isoforms, indicating shortest isoform of IL-24 may be a new promising anti-cancer agent. In this study, we aimed to provide a reproducible method for recombinant production of the smallest isoform of IL-24 (sIL-24). The Structure of sIL-24 was analyzed using bioinformatics tools (I-TASSER, Prosa, RAMPAGE and SPDBV version 4.1). The DNA sequence encoding sIL-24 was chemically synthesized and sub-cloned into the pET-32a (+) vector for further protein expression in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) strain. Upon IPTG induction, sIL-24 peptide was expressed as a thioredoxin fusion protein. The recombinant sIL-24 was released from the fusion by TEV protease cleavage followed by nickel affinity chromatography. The yield of the purified sIL-24 was estimated about 380 渭g/ml. MTT assay showed that sIL-24 peptide inhibited the proliferation of PC-3 cancer cells more effectively than full length IL-24 protein, while none affect the survival of MRC-5 normal cells. These results indicate that the presented expression system is an efficient system for the production of small functional recombinant sIL-24 peptide.This functional peptide may have cancer therapeutic application
