    The attractive nonlinear delta-function potential

    We solve the continuous one-dimensional Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the case of an inverted {\em nonlinear} delta-function potential located at the origin, obtaining the bound state in closed form as a function of the nonlinear exponent. The bound state probability profile decays exponentially away from the origin, with a profile width that increases monotonically with the nonlinear exponent, becoming an almost completely extended state when this approaches two. At an exponent value of two, the bound state suffers a discontinuous change to a delta-like profile. Further increase of the exponent increases again the width of the probability profile, although the bound state is proven to be stable only for exponents below two. The transmission of plane waves across the nonlinear delta potential increases monotonically with the nonlinearity exponent and is insensitive to the sign of its opacity.Comment: submitted to Am.     Inter- and intra-layer excitons in MoS2_2/WS2_2 and MoSe2_2/WSe2_2 heterobilayers

    Accurately described excitonic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers (HBLs) are crucial to comprehend the optical response and the charge carrier dynamics of them. Excitons in multilayer systems posses inter or intralayer character whose spectral positions depend on their binding energy and the band alignment of the constituent single-layers. In this study, we report the electronic structure and the absorption spectra of MoS2_2/WS2_2 and MoSe2_2/WSe2_2 HBLs from first-principles calculations. We explore the spectral positions, binding energies and the origins of inter and intralayer excitons and compare our results with experimental observations. The absorption spectra of the systems are obtained by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of a G0_0W0_0 calculation which corrects the independent particle eigenvalues obtained from density functional theory calculations. Our calculations reveal that the lowest energy exciton in both HBLs possesses interlayer character which is decisive regarding their possible device applications. Due to the spatially separated nature of the charge carriers, the binding energy of inter-layer excitons might be expected to be considerably smaller than that of intra-layer ones. However, according to our calculations the binding energy of lowest energy interlayer excitons is only \sim 20\% lower due to the weaker screening of the Coulomb interaction between layers of the HBLs. Therefore, it can be deduced that the spectral positions of the interlayer excitons with respect to intralayer ones are mostly determined by the band offset of the constituent single-layers. By comparing oscillator strengths and thermal occupation factors, we show that in luminescence at low temperature, the interlayer exciton peak becomes dominant, while in absorption it is almost invisible.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Embedding method for the scattering phase in strongly correlated quantum dots

    The embedding method for the calculation of the conductance through interacting systems connected to single channel leads is generalized to obtain the full complex transmission amplitude that completely characterizes the effective scattering matrix of the system at the Fermi energy. We calculate the transmission amplitude as a function of the gate potential for simple diamond-shaped lattice models of quantum dots with nearest neighbor interactions. In our simple models we do not generally observe an interaction dependent change in the number of zeroes or phase lapses that depend only on the symmetry properties of the underlying lattice. Strong correlations separate and reduce the widths of the resonant peaks while preserving the qualitative properites of the scattering phase.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures.     Entomological characterization of malaria in northern Colombia through vector and parasite species identification, and analyses of spatial distribution and infection rates

    Background: Malaria remains a worldwide public health concern and, in Colombia, despite the efforts to stop malaria transmission, the incidence of cases has increased over the last few years. In this context, it is necessary to evaluate vector diversity, infection rates, and spatial distribution, to better understand disease transmission dynamics. This information may contribute to the planning and development of vector control strategies. Results: A total of 778 Anopheles mosquitoes were collected in fifteen localities of Córdoba from August 2015 to October 2016. Six species were identified and overall, Anopheles albimanus was the most widespread and abundant species (83%). Other species of the Nyssorhynchus subgenus were collected, including Anopheles triannulatus (13%), Anopheles nuneztovari (1%), Anopheles argyritarsis (< 1%) and two species belonging to the Anopheles subgenus: Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (3%) and Anopheles neomaculipalpus (< 1%). Four species were found naturally infected with two Plasmodium species: Anopheles nuneztovari was detected naturally infected with Plasmodium falciparum and Anopheles pseudopunctipennis with Plasmodium vivax, whereas An. albimanus and An. triannulatus were found infected with both parasite species and confirmed by nested PCR. Conclusions: In general, the obtained results were contrasting with previous studies in terms of the most abundant and widespread collected species, and regarding infection rates, which were higher than those previously reported. A positive relationship between mosquito local abundance at the locality level and human infection at the municipality level was found. Mosquito local abundance and the number of houses with mosquitoes in each village are factors explaining malaria human cases in these villages. The obtained results suggest that other factors related to the apparent variation in malaria eco-epidemiology in northern Colombia, must be identified, to provide health authorities with better decision tools aiming to design control and prevention strategies

    Late time tails of the massive vector field in a black hole background

    We investigate the late-time behavior of the massive vector field in the background of the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes. For Schwarzschild black hole, at intermediately late times the massive vector field is represented by three functions with different decay law Ψ0t(+3/2)sinmt\Psi_{0} \sim t^{-(\ell + 3/2)} \sin{m t}, Ψ1t(+5/2)sinmt\Psi_{1} \sim t^{-(\ell + 5/2)} \sin{m t}, Ψ2t(+1/2)sinmt\Psi_{2} \sim t^{-(\ell + 1/2)} \sin{m t}, while at asymptotically late times the decay law Ψt5/6sin(mt)\Psi \sim t^{-5/6} \sin{(m t)} is universal, and does not depend on the multipole number \ell. Together with previous study of massive scalar and Dirac fields where the same asymptotically late-time decay law was found, it means, that the asymptotically late-time decay law t5/6sin(mt)\sim t^{-5/6} \sin{(m t)} \emph{does not depend} also \emph{on the spin} of the field under consideration. For Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes it is observed two different regimes in the late-time decay of perturbations: non-oscillatory exponential damping for small values of mm and oscillatory quasinormal mode decay for high enough mm.     Transcriptomic analysis of the hepatic response to stress in the red cusk-eel (Genypterus chilensis): Insights into lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and liver steatosis

    Indexación: Scopus.Teleosts exhibit a broad divergence in their adaptive response to stress, depending on the magnitude, duration, and frequency of stressors and the species receiving the stimulus. We have previously reported that the red cusk-eel (Genypterus chilensis), an important marine farmed fish, shows a physiological response to stress that results in increased skeletal muscle atrophy mediated by over-expression of components of the ubiquitin proteasome and autophagy-lysosomal systems. To better understand the systemic effects of stress on the red cusk-eel metabolism, the present study assessed the transcriptomic hepatic response to repetitive handling-stress. Using high-Throughput RNA-seq, 259 up-regulated transcripts were found, mostly associated with angiogenesis, gluconeogenesis, and triacylglyceride catabolism. Conversely, 293 transcripts were down-regulated, associated to cholesterol biosynthesis, PPARα signaling, fatty acid biosynthesis, and glycolysis. This gene signature was concordant with hepatic metabolite levels and hepatic oxidative damage. Moreover, the increased plasmatic levels of AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AP (alkaline phosphatase), as well as liver histology suggest stress-induced liver steatosis. This study offers an integrative molecular and biochemical analysis of the hepatic response to handling-stress, and reveals unknown aspects of lipid metabolism in a non-model teleost.http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.017644
