Power Generation, Employee And Societal Well-Being

This research was conducted to explore the employees’ perceptions of clean coal technology (CCT) and the effect of CCT on the state-owned electricity supplier in South Africa (Eskom) and society. A sample of 125 employees from Eskom were surveyed using Google Forms. It was found that CCT is acceptable, appropriate and feasible for Eskom and the effects of CCT on Eskom were found to be positive, although statistically insignificant. The results further suggest that CCT has a negligible relationship with society and the environment, except for general health. The relationship between CCT and corporate governance and CCT and social responsibility was also not significant.  Thus, it became apparent that the implementation of CCT will improve the general health of people who are affected by emissions from coal-fired power plants and will support the South African government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. However, the feasibility of implementing CCT requires more comprehensive research among different stakeholders using reliable indicators of the effects of CCT on Eskom and society at large

A research report submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Commerce specialising in Taxation. Johannesburg, August 2016.The impact of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Standard on Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information in Tax Matters has a significant impact on Financial Institutions globally. This paper aims to critically evaluate the current South African legislation and the obligations it places on financial institutions. The research also highlights the challenges faced by a financial institutions in interpreting and implementing the often complex requirements of the regulations with a particular focus on the following areas namely customer on-boarding and enhanced due diligence procedures, monitoring of accounts, remediation of the existing customer base, system development, and reporting to the South African Revenue Service. The research also looks into the readiness of developing countries in implementing the Automatic Exchange of Information. The research concludes with a discussion into the appropriateness of South Africa’s decision to agree to be one of the early adopters of this legislation despite the challenges identified above. Key Words: OECD, Standard on Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information for Tax purposes, Common Reporting Standard, Financial Institutions.GR201

Creativity and Organic Songwriting: A Deconstruction of Original Songs

    Get PDF
Creativity and organic songwriting define uniqueness and are the building blocks of artistic self-expression. This paper consists of a deconstruction of eight original song recordings including the organic songwriting methods and creative ideas which led to the end result. The formulation of each recording is discussed in chronological order and in detail as well as influential ideas and songwriting styles of well-known contemporary artists such as Damien Rice, Passenger and Bon Iver. Along with individual and psychological approaches to songwriting, production elements are mentioned which indicate how the digital world influenced the final version of each song. This area relied on collaboration and experimentation while working with an audio engineer both inside and outside a studio setting. Essential musical and ideological components which help make the song stand out creatively and organically such as production, processing, performance and arrangement are included. The information presented alludes to the value of a songwriter’s individuality, creativity, discovery of their unique voice, and understanding of their personal growth to progress in a way that feels right

THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS OF TAKRA (BUTTERMILK) FOR HUMAN HEALTH

    Get PDF
In Ayurveda it is considered that the basis of both the health and the diseases is Ahara (food). Ahara is considered as Prana (basis of life). Acharya Kashyap had clearly stated that Ahara is the best medicine. Takra (buttermilk) is one of the Aharadravya described in Ayurved with lots of medicinal properties. Use of Takra is indicated as single drug or Anupan (vehicle) or as Pathya (wholesome) in various diseases like Grahni (sprue), piles, diarrhea etc.. Presence of MFGM, sphingolipids, casiens, lactoferrins, various vitamins etc. has been detected in buttermilk. These constituents somewhat explain the mechanism of action of buttermilk. In Bhavprakash Nighantu, it is clearly stated that a person who consumes Takra never suffers from any disease and where Takra (buttermilk) is used as medicine for a disease then there is never relapse of that disease. Takra is easily palatable and can be used both for prevention and treatment of diseases

Transcriptional Regulation of Metabolic Genes by the Basic Leucine Zipper Transcription Factor Hac1ip and Nutrient Stimuli

Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells respond to nutrients in their environment by altering their metabolic and transcriptional state in order to optimise the use of available nutrients and decide which of the several developmental pathways to pursue. In the yeast S. cerevisiae, meiosis and pseudohyphal growth are two major differentiation outcomes in response to nitrogen starvation. A central component of unfolded protein response pathway, the bZIP transcription factor Hac1ip, negatively regulates meiosis and pseudohyphal growth. The present study investigates this negative regulatory mechanism at early meiotic genes by Hac1ip in nitrogen-rich conditions. Regulation of transcription by Ume6p transcriptional regulator, Rpd3p-Sin3p histone deacetylase complex and Isw2p-Itc1p chromatin remodelling complex at URS1 was also investigated here. We also tested for induction of pseudohyphal growth in diploids from SK1 genetic background in response to nitrogen starvation conditions known to induce meiosis. I constructed destabilised Îē-galactosidase reporters expressed from URS1- CYC1-Ub-X-lacZ reporters to analyze transcriptional activity at URS1 site of early meiotic genes in nutrient rich conditions. The data presented here successfully demonstrates Hac1ip-mediated repression at URS1 sites in nitrogen-rich conditions. URS1-CYC1-Ub-X-lacZ reporters were expressed in mitotic repression machinery mutants (ume6Δ, rpd3Δ, sin3Δ, isw2Δ and itc1Δ) under nitrogen rich conditions. The data presented here from these experiments not only corroborates their known role in repression at URS1 but also suggested regulation at additional sites in the minimal CYC1 promoter. Deletion of Sin3p suggested independent repression function separable from Rpd3p. Isw2p also acts independently of Itc1p at sites other than URS1. We also show that pseudohyphal growth was stimulated by non-fermentable carbon sources in sporulation efficient SK1 genetic background. The data also indicates that stimulation of pseudohyphal growth by non-fermentable carbon sources does not require respiration function or functional mitochondrial RTG pathway
