    Optimum Partition Parameter of Divide-and-Conquer Algorithm for Solving Closest-Pair Problem

    Divide and Conquer is a well known algorithmic procedure for solving many kinds of problem. In this procedure, the problem is partitioned into two parts until the problem is trivially solvable. Finding the distance of the closest pair is an interesting topic in computer science. With divide and conquer algorithm we can solve closest pair problem. Here also the problem is partitioned into two parts until the problem is trivially solvable. But it is theoretically and practically observed that sometimes partitioning the problem space into more than two parts can give better performances. In this paper, a new proposal is given that dividing the problem space into (n) number of parts can give better result while divide and conquer algorithm is used for solving the closest pair of point's problem.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1010.590

    Does Women?s Status Matter for Food Security? Evidence from Bangladesh

    Using data from a survey of Bangladeshi households, this paper investigates the link between female status and food security. Employing three different indicators of female status ? husband?s and wife?s assets brought at marriage, female share of household income and a composite index of women empowerment, the paper finds evidence of women?s status influencing food security. By raising the level of food security for some disadvantaged women?s groups female status is also found to be instrumental in mitigating the extent of gender-based within-household discrimination.     Domestic Violence Against Women: Its Determinants and Implications for Gender Resource Allocation

    Using data from a survey of Bangladeshi households, this paper explores the determinants of domestic violence against women as well as its implications for the resources allocated to women. The findings reveal that higher education of women and that of their husbands, and better socioeconomic status of households are crucial in reducing the risk of violence, while, contrary to general perceptions, women?s involvement in income generating activities and participation in NGO programmes do not have any similar effects. When resources allocated to women with and without the experiences of domestic violence are compared, no statistically significant difference between the mean calories consumed by the two groups can be found. However, there is robust evidence of women subject to domestic violence receiving significantly lower calories from the preferred food items such as, fish, meat, eggs, drinks and dairy products. Furthermore, this group of women is allocated significantly lower amounts of household food and non-food expenses compared to their counterparts who do not report domestic violence against them.domestic violence, intra-household distribution, Bangladesh

    Synthesis of novel 5-substituted pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine antifolates as selective and potent anti-tumor agents

    In last few decades many folate analogs have been discovered and several compounds are successfully being used as anticancer agents. Methotrexate (MTX), pemetrexed (PMX), raltitrexed (RTX): are a few examples of classical antifolates that are currently in clinical use. Although these compounds are widely used, all of them show dose limiting toxicity due to their non-specific transport into normal cells as well as malignant cells. Currently, clinically used classical antifolates suffer from this disadvantage because there is no way to selectively transport them into malignant cells. Currently available antifolates are transported via reduced folate career (RFC) as well as Folate receptors (FRs) and/or Proton coupled folate transporter (PCFT). Because RFC is ubiquitous in the human body, the dose limiting toxicity is unavoidable for an antifolate if it is a substrate for RFC. To circumvent this challenge with antifolate chemotherapy, it is necessary to develop agents which are selective for the cancerous tissues. Exploiting the site specificity of FRs and/or the acidic pH specificity of PCFT, the goal of developing targeted antifolate agents could be achieved. This approach of selective transport into tumor cells via FRs and/or PCFT and over RFC targets inhibition of GARFTase dependent salvage pathway for purine biosynthesis inside the tumor. Based on this premise, five 5-substituted pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidines have been designed, synthesized and characterized. Among them four are novel compounds and one is a previously reported compound. The previously reported compound has never been tested for FR/PCFT-GARFTase selectivity before, and therefore was of interest and was synthesized. To investigate the role of side chain aromatic group in the folate analogs, phenyl, fluorophenyl and furan groups have been placed in the linker region. The compounds comprise of different aliphatic linker chain length from 2C to 5C. To test selectivity, FR and PCFT transport have been studied. and GARFTase inhibitory assay will be conducted

    An Analytical Approximation for the Excess Noise Factor of Avalanche Photodiodes with Dead Space

    Approximate analytical expressions are derived for the mean gain and the excess noise factor of avalanche photodiodes including the effect of dead space. The analysis is based on undertaking a characteristic-equation approach to obtain an approximate analytical solution to the existing system of recurrence equations which characterize the statistics of the random multiplication gain. The analytical expressions for the excess noise factor and the mean gain are shown to be in good agreement with the exact results obtained from numerical solutions of the recurrence equations for values of the dead space reaching up to 20% of the width of the multiplication region

    A Bibliometric Analysis and Visualization of the Scientific Publications of Universities: A Study of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences during 1992-2018

    The evaluation of universities from different perspectives is important for their scientific development. Analyzing the scientific papers of a university under the bibliometric approach is one main evaluative approach. The aim of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis and visualization of papers published by Hamadan University of Medical Science (HUMS), Iran, during 1992-2018. This study used bibliometric and visualization techniques. Scopus database was used for data collection. 3753 papers were retrieved by applying Affiliation Search in Scopus advanced search section. Excel and VOSviewer software packages were used for data analysis and bibliometric indicator extraction. An increasing trend was seen in the numbers of HUMS's published papers and received citations. The highest rate of collaboration in national level was with Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Internationally, HUMS's researchers had the highest collaboration with the authors from the United States, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, respectively. All highly-cited papers were published in high level Q1 journals. Term clustering demonstrated four main clusters: epidemiological studies, laboratory studies, pharmacological studies, and microbiological studies. The results of this study can be beneficial to the policy-makers of this university. In addition, researchers and bibliometricians can use this study as a pattern for studying and visualizing the bibliometric indicators of other universities and research institutions

    Instantly Decodable Network Coding for Real-Time Scalable Video Broadcast over Wireless Networks

    In this paper, we study a real-time scalable video broadcast over wireless networks in instantly decodable network coded (IDNC) systems. Such real-time scalable video has a hard deadline and imposes a decoding order on the video layers.We first derive the upper bound on the probability that the individual completion times of all receivers meet the deadline. Using this probability, we design two prioritized IDNC algorithms, namely the expanding window IDNC (EW-IDNC) algorithm and the non-overlapping window IDNC (NOW-IDNC) algorithm. These algorithms provide a high level of protection to the most important video layer before considering additional video layers in coding decisions. Moreover, in these algorithms, we select an appropriate packet combination over a given number of video layers so that these video layers are decoded by the maximum number of receivers before the deadline. We formulate this packet selection problem as a two-stage maximal clique selection problem over an IDNC graph. Simulation results over a real scalable video stream show that our proposed EW-IDNC and NOW-IDNC algorithms improve the received video quality compared to the existing IDNC algorithms

Despite the little complications and the reportedly acceptable efficacy of thermal ablation methods, quite few medical centers have sought the potential benefits of employing them. This paper provides an introduction to the literature, principles and advances of Percutaneous Laser Ablation therapy of thyroid benign nodules, as well as a discussion on its efficacy, complications and future. Several clinical research papers evaluating the thermal effect of laser on the alleviation of thyroid nodules have been reviewed to illuminate the important points. The results of this research can help researchers to advance the approach and medical centers to decide on investing in these novel therapies
