    Cooperative Access in Cognitive Radio Networks: Stable Throughput and Delay Tradeoffs

    In this paper, we study and analyze fundamental throughput-delay tradeoffs in cooperative multiple access for cognitive radio systems. We focus on the class of randomized cooperative policies, whereby the secondary user (SU) serves either the queue of its own data or the queue of the primary user (PU) relayed data with certain service probabilities. The proposed policy opens room for trading the PU delay for enhanced SU delay. Towards this objective, stability conditions for the queues involved in the system are derived. Furthermore, a moment generating function approach is employed to derive closed-form expressions for the average delay encountered by the packets of both users. Results reveal that cooperation expands the stable throughput region of the system and significantly reduces the delay at both users. Moreover, we quantify the gain obtained in terms of the SU delay under the proposed policy, over conventional relaying that gives strict priority to the relay queue.Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE 12th Intl.     Documenting and Analyzing the Harmful Impacts of The Seasonal Floods in Upper Egypt on Qena-Safaga Railway Track Infrastructure

    In light of the world's current severe climatic changes, it has been observed that the frequency of flash floods and torrents is increasing at an accelerating rate in numerous areas, exposing civil infrastructure and property to significant damage and losses. Recently, there have been many cases of torrents attacking some railway tracks in Egypt, especially in the east of the country, including the Qena-Safaga railway track, which is the main objective of this study to minimize the expected negative impacts. Torrents, or flash floods, are one of the most destructive natural hazards, especially in arid regions. Seasonally, these regions are exposed to heavy rains that cause serious flash floods with great negative impacts. In such conditions, the railway track needs maintenance, insurance, and protection against the risks of monsoon floods that hit those areas from time to time. The present study includes the most popular flash floods that attacked railway infrastructures all over the world and how they were protected, allowing them to successfully deal with these exceptional circumstances to maintain the integrity of the railway tracks and the efficiency of their performance. The study will present a classification of flash floods that occurred in Egypt and some other places in the last few decades based on multiple criteria, including severity, lifetime, direction, impacts, and the types of harmful effects on infrastructure. The goal of the study is to introduce a practical manual and procedure for how to deal successfully with flash floods that may attack the under-study railway track

    Modified technique for sacrospinous-sacrotuberous ligament complex colpopexy in apical prolapse: preliminary results of a pilot randomized study

    Background: Apical prolapse is frequently encountered following vaginal hysterectomy either or as a primary finding in patients with pelvic organ prolapse. This pilot comparative study introduces a modified sacrospinous sacrotuberous ligament fixation with biologic mesh augmentation which necessitates no special kits to be performed.Methods: This study was conducted at Department of Obstetrics and gynecology, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, and Department of Women Health of Bethanien Hospital, Iserlöhn, Germany from March 2018 to May 2020. 40 women with either utero-vaginal or vaginal vault prolapse were randomized to either; group (A): 20 women scheduled for modified sacrospinous-sacrotuberous fixation procedure, or group (B): 20 women scheduled for conventional sacrospinous-sacrotuberous fixation procedure.Results: Improvement of the Pelvic organ prolapse quantification system (POP-Q) stage from the base line pre-operative stage was 1 stage higher in the modified SS/ST-F group compared to the conventional SSF group (3 stage improvement from baseline in SS/ST-F group versus 2 stage improvement only in conventional SSF group).Conclusions: This pilot study provides a modified sacrospinous sacrotuberous ligament colpopexy technique which is easier to be performed and mastered, does not need the use of special devices, provides better improvement of grade of prolapse and less complications compared to the conventional technique.

    Flavonoids Biosynthesis in Plants as a Defense Mechanism: Role and Function Concerning Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetic Properties

    Flavonoids are a major class of secondary metabolites that comprises more than 6000 compounds that have been identified. They are biosynthesized via the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway that involves groups of enzymes such as isomerases, hydroxylases, and reductases that greatly affect the determination of the flavonoid skeleton. For example, transferase enzymes responsible for the modification of sugar result in changes in the physiological activity of the flavonoids and changes in their physical properties, such as solubility, reactivity, and interaction with cellular target molecules, which affect their pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic properties. In addition, flavonoids have diverse biological activities such as antioxidants, anticancer, and antiviral in managing Alzheimer’s disease. However, most marine flavonoids are still incompletely discovered because marine flavonoid biosynthesis is produced and possesses unique substitutions that are not commonly found in terrestrial bioactive compounds.     Physical pegylation enhances the cytotoxicity of 5-fluorouracil-loaded PLGA And PCL nanoparticles.

    Purpose : The main goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of physical incorporation of polyethylene glycol (PEG) into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-loaded polymeric nanoparticles (NPs). METHODS: The 5-FU-loaded NPs were prepared utilizing a simple double emulsion method using polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) with or without PEG 6000. The surface charge, particle size, and shape of NPs were evaluated by standard procedures. Both Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction spectra of the 5-FU loaded NPs were compared against the pure 5-FU. The in vitro release profile of 5-FU from the NPs was monitored by the dialysis tubing method. Cell death and apoptosis induction in response to 5-FU NP exposure were measured by MTT and Annexin-V/7-amino-actinomycin D (7-AAD) assays, respectively, in Daoy, HepG2, and HT-29 cancer cell lines. RESULTS: The 5-FU loaded NPs were found to be spherical in shape with size ranging between 176±6.7 and 253.9±8.6 nm. The zeta potential varied between -7.13± 0.13 and -27.06±3.18 mV, and the entrapment efficiency was between 31.96% and 74.09%. The in vitro release of the drug followed a two-phase mode characterized by rapid release in the first 8 hrs followed by a period of slow release up to 72 hrs with composition-based variable extents. Cells exposed to NPs demonstrated a significant cell death which correlated with the ratio of PEG in the formulations in Daoy and HepG2 cells but not in HT-29 cells. Formulations (F1-F3) significantly induced early apoptosis in HT-29 cell lines. CONCLUSION: The physical PEGylation significantly enhanced the entrapment and loading efficiencies of 5-FU into NPs formulated with PLGA and PCL. It also fostered the in vitro cytotoxicity of 5-FU-loaded NPs in both Daoy and HepG2 cells. Induction of early apoptosis was confirmed for some of the formulations

    Production of Biodiesel from Locally Available Spent Vegetable Oils

    The depletion of fossil fuels prompted considerable research to find alternative fuels. Due its environmental benefits and renewable nature the production of biodiesel has acquired increasing importance with a view to optimizing the production procedure and the sources of feedstock. Millions of liters of waste frying oil are produced from local restaurants and houses every year, most are discarded into sewage systems causing damage to the networks.  This study is intended to consider aspects related to the feasibility of the production of biodiesel from waste frying oils which will solve the problem of waste frying oil pollution and reduce the cost of biodiesel production.This research studies the conversion of locally available spent vegetable oils of different origins and with different chemical compositions into an environmentally friendly fuel. The biodiesel production requirements by base catalyzed trans-esterification process for the different feed stocks are determined according to the measured physical properties. The quality of the produced biodiesel is compared to petro diesel in terms of established standard specifications

    Water-pipe smoking and serum testosterone levels in adult males in Qatar.

    Water-pipe (WP) smoking is the most common method of tobacco consumption in the Middle-East and is rapidly spreading on a global scale. Although, water-pipe smoking is linked to various diseases, such as emphysema and various types of cancers, its effect on testosterone levels has yet to be investigated. This study explores the effect of water-pipe smoking on serum testosterone levels in males in Qatar. In this cross-sectional sample within a cohort study, we retrieved data for a total of 1000 male volunteers from the Qatar BioBank (QBB) project. A self-reported questionnaire was used to determine the water-pipe smoking status of participants. Moreover, participants were stratified based on the frequency of smoking. Total testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were measured clinically, whereas free testosterone and bioavailable testosterone were calculated using Vermeulen's equation. Hormone values of 541 males (277 water-pipe smokers and 264 non-smokers) were compared using multiple regression analysis based on water-pipe smoking status after adjusting for confounding factors. No statistically significant difference was observed between WP smokers and non-water-pipe smokers in the likelihood of having lower or higher total testosterone, after adjustment for confounding factors. Similar results were found in free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, and sex hormone binding globulin (all p>0.05). When compared with the reference group, both light and heavy water-pipe smokers had a similar likelihood of circulating low total testosterone levels (OR=0.83, 95% CI: 0.46-1.49; and OR=0.80, 95% CI: 0.43-1.49; respectively). Our results reveal, for the first time, that there is no significant change in total testosterone, free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin in waterpipe smokers compared to non-water-pipe smokers. Therefore, we believe that further studies are needed to confirm the effect of water-pipe smoking on testosterone in different populations.This work was supported by the College of Medicine of Qatar University and grant QUST-2-CMED-2018-1 from Qatar University

    Evaluation of Downdrag Loads on Bridge Pile Foundations in Inundated Collapsible Soils

    69A3551947137This report and the accompanying computer code (Software, Drag_Pile) describe the mobilized response analysis of piles under axial loads with the consideration of downdrag forces caused by the settlement of inundated collapsible soil layer(s). Pile foundations in collapsible soils may experience a sudden increase in the axial load (i.e., negative skin friction) due to the inundation of the surrounding soils, which may lead to significant reduction in the pile capacity and excessive pile settlement. A soil-pile model is developed to determine the downdrag force (negative skin friction) acting on the pile and pile settlement due to the inundation of the collapsible soil layer(s) in the vicinity of the pile foundations
