    PERCEPTIONS OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF MISPRONUNCIATIONS OF ENGLISH SPEECH SOUNDS

    The present study attempts to investigate Indonesian EFL teachers' and native English speakers' perceptions of mispronunciations of English sounds by Indonesian EFL learners. For this purpose, a paper-form questionnaire consisting of 32 target mispronunciations was distributed to Indonesian secondary school teachers of English and also to native English speakers. An analysis of the respondents' perceptions has discovered that 14 out of the 32 target mispronunciations are pedagogically significant in pronunciation instruction. A further analysis of the reasons for these major mispronunciations has reconfirmed the prevalence of interference of learners native language in their English pronunciation as a major cause of mispronunciations. It has also revealed Indonesian EFL teachers' tendency to overestimate the seriousness of their learners' pronunciations. Based on these findings, the study makes suggestions for better English pronunciation teaching in Indonesia or other EFL countries

    Factors Determining Global Intelligibility of EFL Learners in Asian Contexts

    Assuming that global intelligibility should be the goal of pronunciation instruction at EFL classrooms, this study aimed at investigating its contributing factors. To reach the aim, this study involved five Japanese and six Indonesian senior high school students as the providers of EFL utterances, and five English native speakers and five ESL speakers as the assessors who were required to evaluate the EFL speakers’ utterances. The collected data were then submitted to a step-wise multiple regression to examine the potential contribution of the investigated factors to global intelligibility. First, the results have disclosed that there was a significant difference in the assessment of the contributing factors between the ENL speakers and the ESL speakers, either for Japanese EFL learners or for Indonesian EFL learners.     Determinants of Sustainable Supply Chain Performance: The role of Corporate Entrepreneurship in Indecision Textile Companies

    This study examined various factors which may enhance the sustainable supply chain activities in Indonesian textile companies. Due to the lack in supply chain operations, the business performance of Indonesian textile companies was not up to the mark. A survey was carried out to collect the primary data. For survey purpose, total 300 questionnaires were distributed among the employees of Indonesian textile companies. By using the Smart PLS 3.0, five hypotheses were tested. During this study, it was revealed that management support and sufficient project time has important role in sustainable supply chain. Supportive organization culture has important role to enhance the positive effect of management support and sufficient project time on sustainable supply chain. It is recommended to the Indonesian textile companies to focus on management support, sufficient project time and organization culture to support sustainable supply chain performance. Therefore, this study is important for the practitioners to enhance textile company’s performance by promoting sustainable supply chain activities

    What makes EFL speakers’ utterances more intelligible in the context of global intelligibility?

    In this globalisation era, native-like pronunciation has no longer become the goal of pronunciation teaching in EFL classrooms. Instead, intelligibility, more specifically, global intelligibility, has become a legitimate goal of pronunciation teaching (Moedjito, 2009). However, researchers and practitioners have not reached to the final conclusion of what makes EFL speakers’ utterances more intelligible. This paper is to report a study investigating factors which made EFL speakers’ utterances more intelligible in the context of global intelligibility. In order to achieve the goal, the present researchers used three instruments to collect data: a questionnaire, an in-depth interview, and an assessment of EFL speakers’ utterances from the in-depth interview. The quantitative data from the questionnaire and assessment of EFL speakers’ utterances were submitted to a Pearson’s Product Moment test to assess the correlation coefficient of each independent variable to intelligibility and to a multiple regression test to examine the predictive power of the independent variables to intelligibility as the dependent variable. Meanwhile, the data of the in-depth interview were qualitatively scrutinised. The results of the data analysis revealed that word pronunciation accuracy might become the most influencing factor which made EFL speakers’ utterances more intelligible. In addition to the accurate pronunciation, meaningful vocabulary might crucially account for intelligibility of EFL speakers’ utterances. These findings were positively confirmed by the results of the in-depth interview analysis. The major pedagogical implication of the study is that in English pronunciation classes, there should be more focus on word pronunciation accuracy in EFL classrooms

    Persistent proteinuria as an indicator of renal disease in HIV-infected children

    Background Persistent proteinuria (microalbuminuria) has been reported to be a precursor of HIV-related renal disease. Screening allows for early management in order to prevent the progression of renal disease and decrease morbidity and mortality associated with chronic kidney disease in HIV. Several studies have been done on renal manifestation in HIV-infected children from American and African regions, but similar studies from Asia are lacking. Objective To determine the prevalence of persistent proteinuria in HIV-positive children on antiretroviral therapy (ARV) in Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Methods A cross-sectional study on children with HIV and treated with  highly active antiretroviral therapy (HARRT) was done from August 2014 to February 2015. Microalbuminuria was measured by the ratio of urine albumin to creatinine (ACR), while proteinuria was measured by dipstick. Measurements were performed 3 times in 4-8 weeks. All subjects underwent complete evaluation of blood tests, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), CD4 counts, and urinalysis. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and logistic regression tests. Results Of 38 children on HARRT enrolled in this study, 2 subjects developed acute kidney injury (AKI), 4 subjects were suspected to have urinary tract infection (UTI), and 1 subject was suspected to have urinary tract stones. The prevalence of persistent microalbuminuria was 2.6%. There was no correlation between immunological status, WHO clinical stage, or duration of ARV and the incidence of persistent proteinuria (P>0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of persistent proteinuria is  lower in younger HIV-infected children at a non-advanced stage and HIV-infected children with normal immunological status who are on HAART. We provide baseline data on the renal conditions of HIV-infected children in the era of HAART, before tenovofir is  increasingly used as an antiretroviral therapy regimen in Indonesia

    Impact of a three-dose diphtheria outbreak response immunization in East Java, Indonesia, 6 months after completion

    Several outbreaks of diphtheria have occured in the East Java Province of Indonesia since 2011. The last effort to stop the outbreak in the province was a three round outbreak response immunization (ORI) in 2018.The aim of the this study was to evaluate the impact of the 2018 ORI in East Java province – 6 months following the completion of the program. Surveillance data was collected for 6 month period, from January to June 2019. The source of data was the district health offices, hospitals, community health centers, and private physician and paramedic practices. The data included demographic characteristics, involved health facilities, patient immunization history, clinical signs and symptoms, some laboratory test results and other additional examinations. All cases were evaluated by the East Java Provincial Diphtheria Expert Committee and not based on the individual physician decision. During the 6 month period, there were 97 diphtheria cases which approved by the Diphtheria Expert Committee. The reports came from 36 of 38 districts. One patient died, denoting a case fatality rate of 1%. The majority were 19 years of age or less, with uncomplete immunization. Patients above 19 years were 24%. Compared with 2017 (438 cases) and 2018 (310), 2019 saw a significant reduction in the number of reported cases. Only 4 positive culture results were collected (positivity rate 4,13%). Two patients had Mitis subtype and the other two had Gravis subtype. Diphtheria ORI in East Java had a significant impact during the first 6 months of 2019

    THE ANTIDIPHTHERIA ANTIBODIES OF SEROEPIDEMIOLOGY SURVEY AMONG ADOLESCENTS IN BANGKALAN AND KEDIRI DISTRICTS

    Background: An increase in diphtheria cases has occurred in East Java Province since 2011. The resistance level to diphtheria is considered as the most important cause. Purpose: The study aims analyzed the immunity level immunity to diphtheria in adolescents aged 16-18 years old in Bangkalan and Kediri Districts. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study, conducted on students in eleven grade of senior high schools (SMAN) from both districts. The inclusion criteria included being 16-18 years old and students in eleven grades of senior high schools in Bangkalan and Kediri. This study was approved by their parents/guardians. The exclusion criteria included immunocompromised students and those who have a history of diphtheria infection. The data were obtained from 204 samples, 89 samples in Bangkalan, and 115 samples in Kediri. The antidiphtheria antibodies examination was carried out by the Vero cell method. The antibodies levels were grouped according to WHO standard, consist of vulnerable, basic, full, and long-term. Further analysis was done with 2 tiers of immunity, consist of immune and vulnerable. Results: The immunization coverage for basic and booster diphtheria vaccine is better in Kediri than in Bangkalan. In contrast, levels of antibodies samples in Bangkalan District is better. The participants who were immune in Bangkalan were higher than those in Kediri (91% vs. 44.3%). Conclusion: The immunity adolescents of Bangkalan is higher than in adolescent Kediri District. The adolescents in Kediri have a greater risk to get infected by the diseas
