An ASP-Based Approach to Scheduling Pre-operative Assessment Clinic
The problem of scheduling Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic (PAC) consists of assigning patients to a day for the exams needed before a surgical procedure, taking into account patients with different priority levels, due dates, and operators availability. Realizing a satisfying schedule is of upmost importance for a clinic, since delay in PAC can cause delay in the subsequent phases, causing a decrease in patients’ satisfaction. In this paper, we divide the problem in two sub-problems: In the first sub-problem patients are assigned to a day taking into account a default list of exams; then, in the second sub-problem, having the actual list of exams needed by each patient, we use the results of the first sub-problem to assign a starting time to each exam. We first present a mathematical formulation for both problems. Then, we present solutions based on Answer Set Programming (ASP): The first solution is a genuine ASP encoding of the sub-problems, while the second introduces domain-specific optimizations. Experiments show that both solutions provide satisfying results in short time, while the second is able to prove optimality faster
An ASP-based Solution to the Chemotherapy Treatment Scheduling problem
The problem of scheduling chemotherapy treatments in oncology clinics is a complex problem, given that the solution has to satisfy (as much as possible) several requirements such as the cyclic nature of chemotherapy treatment plans, maintaining a constant number of patients, and the availability of resources, for example, treatment time, nurses, and drugs. At the same time, realizing a satisfying schedule is of upmost importance for obtaining the best health outcomes. In this paper we first consider a specific instance of the problem which is employed in the San Martino Hospital in Genova, Italy, and present a solution to the problem based on Answer Set Programming (ASP). Then, we enrich the problem and the related ASP encoding considering further features often employed in other hospitals, desirable also in S. Martino, and/or considered in related papers. Results of an experimental analysis, conducted on the real data provided by the San Martino Hospital, show that ASP is an effective solving methodology also for this important scheduling problem
Inhibitory feedback from the motor circuit gates mechanosensory processing in C. elegans
Animals must integrate sensory cues with their current behavioral context to
generate a suitable response. How this integration occurs is poorly understood.
Previously we developed high throughput methods to probe neural activity in
populations of Caenorhabditis elegans and discovered that the animal's
mechanosensory processing is rapidly modulated by the animal's locomotion.
Specifically we found that when the worm turns it suppresses its
mechanosensory-evoked reversal response. Here we report that C. elegans use
inhibitory feedback from turning-associated neurons to provide this rapid
modulation of mechanosensory processing. By performing high-throughput
optogenetic perturbations triggered on behavior, we show that turning
associated neurons SAA, RIV and/or SMB suppress mechanosensory-evoked reversals
during turns. We find that activation of the gentle-touch mechanosensory
neurons or of any of the interneurons AIZ, RIM, AIB and AVE during a turn is
less likely to evoke a reversal than activation during forward movement.
Inhibiting neurons SAA, RIV and SMB during a turn restores the likelihood with
which mechanosensory activation evokes reversals. Separately, activation of
premotor interneuron AVA evokes reversals regardless of whether the animal is
turning or moving forward. We therefore propose that inhibitory signals from
SAA, RIV and/or SMB gate mechanosensory signals upstream of neuron AVA. We
conclude that C. elegans rely on inhibitory feedback from the motor circuit to
modulate its response to sensory stimuli on fast timescales. This need for
motor signals in sensory processing may explain the ubiquity in many organisms
of motor-related neural activity patterns seen across the brain, including in
sensory processing areas
Assessment of Preload Loss after Cyclic Loading in the OT Bridge System in an “All-on-Four” Rehabilitation Model in the Absence of One and Two Prosthesis Screws
The aim of this study was to evaluate the stability of prosthetic screws after applying cyclic loadings in an “all-on-four” rehabilitation model with the OT Bridge system. The model was tested both with and without anterior screws. Four implant analogues following the “all-on-four” concept were inserted in an edentulous mandibular resin model. An OT Bridge system with a Cr–Co prosthetic framework was fabricated. Depending on the presence or absence of one or two anterior screws on the implant analogues, three groups were created, i.e., Gr.1: three tightening screws, Gr.2: two tightening screws, Control Group: four tightening screws. Each single group underwent subsequent 400,000 cyclic loads, simulating approximately a year of chewing by using a dynamometer machine. This cycle was repeated five times for each group, and preload loss values were evaluated on each prosthetic screw after each cycle. All the data obtained were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Student’s t-test. No statistically significant differences after intragroup analysis were found. A statistically significant difference within the Gr.1 between the screws in positions 33 and 36, equal to 15.2% (p-value = 0.0176), was found. The OT Bridge seems a useful system to maintain the retention of a prosthesis during mechanical stress conditions even in the absence of one screw in an “all-on-four” rehabilitation. This could represent a good solution to solve the esthetic problem of the screw buccal access hole for fixed solutions
GIANO-TNG spectroscopy of red supergiants in the young star cluster RSGC2
The inner disk of the Galaxy has a number of young star clusters dominated by
red supergiants that are heavily obscured by dust extinction and observable
only at infrared wavelengths. These clusters are important tracers of the
recent star formation and chemical enrichment history in the inner Galaxy.
During the technical commissioning and as a first science verification of the
GIANO spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we secured
high-resolution (R~50,000) near-infrared spectra of three red supergiants in
the young Scutum cluster RSGC2. Taking advantage of the full YJHK spectral
coverage of GIANO in a single exposure, we were able to identify several tens
of atomic and molecular lines suitable for chemical abundance determinations.
By means of spectral synthesis and line equivalent width measurements, we
obtained abundances of Fe and other iron-peak elements such as V, Cr, Ni, of
alpha (O, Mg, Si, Ca and Ti) and other light elements (C, N, Na, Al, K, Sc),
and of some s-process elements (Y, Sr). We found iron abundances between half
and one third solar and solar-scaled [X/Fe] abundance patterns of iron-peak,
alpha and most of the light elements, consistent with a thin-disk chemistry. We
found a depletion of [C/Fe] and enhancement of [N/Fe], consistent with CN
burning, and low 12C/13C abundance ratios (between 9 and 11), requiring
extra-mixing processes in the stellar interiors during the post-main sequence
evolution. Finally, we found a slight [Sr/Fe] enhancement and a slight [Y/Fe]
depletion (by a factor of <=2), with respect to solar.Comment: Paper accepted on A&
ALS-related FUS mutations alter axon growth in motoneurons and affect HuD/ELAVL4 and FMRP activity
Mutations in the RNA-binding protein (RBP) FUS have been genetically associated with the motoneuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Using both human induced pluripotent stem cells and mouse models, we found that FUS-ALS causative mutations affect the activity of two relevant RBPs with important roles in neuronal RNA metabolism: HuD/ELAVL4 and FMRP. Mechanistically, mutant FUS leads to upregulation of HuD protein levels through competition with FMRP for HuD mRNA 3’UTR binding. In turn, increased HuD levels overly stabilize the transcript levels of its targets, NRN1 and GAP43. As a consequence, mutant FUS motoneurons show increased axon branching and growth upon injury, which could be rescued by dampening NRN1 levels. Since similar phenotypes have been previously described in SOD1 and TDP-43 mutant models, increased axonal growth and branching might represent broad early events in the pathogenesis of ALS
In vitro efficacy of Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato against unfed Amblyomma parvum (Acari: Ixodidae).
Amblyomma parvum Aragão (Acari: Ixodidae) is a tick species found with wide distribution in the Neotropical region. Even though it is a wildlife-related tick, it is also a frequent parasite of domestic animals, is aggressive to human beings and may harbor pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, it is a target species for control on domestic animals, particularly those at the rural?wildlife interface. Herein, the efficacy of two isolates (E9 and IBCB 425) of an entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato, already evaluated for ticks that parasitize domestic animals, was tested against unfed A. parvum adults. Both isolates displayed high acaricidal efficacy after immersion in fungal conidial suspensions for 5 min. Isolate E9 killed all ticks by the 7th day post-treatment, and isolate IBCB 425 did so by the 11th day. Tick mortality of 80 and 90% was achieved as early as the 3rd and 4th days, respectively, with both treatments. Thus, if a commercial M. anisopliae s.l. acaricide against domestic animal ticks is developed, it would also be effective against A. parvum

Thorough characterization of a EUV mask
We reported that we were successful in our 45nm technology node device demonstration in February 2008 and 22nm node technology node device patterning in February 2009 using ASML's Alpha Demo Tool (ADT). In order to insert extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography at the 15nm technology node and beyond, we have thoroughly characterized one EUV mask, a so-called NOVACD mask. In this paper, we report on three topics, The first topic is an analysis of line edge roughness (LER) using a mask Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and the Actinic Inspection Tool (AIT) to compare resist images printed with the ASML ADT. The results of the analysis show a good correlation between the mask AFM and the mask SEM measurements, However, the resist printing results for the isolated space patterns are slightly different. The cause ofthis discrepancy may be resist blur, image log slope and SEM image quality and so on. The second topic is an analysis of mask topography using an AFM and relative reflectivity of mirror and absorber surface using the AIT, The AFM data show 6 and 7 angstrom rms roughness for mirror and absorber, respectively. The reflectivity measurements show that the mirror reflects EUV light about 20 times higher than absorber. The last topic is an analysis of a 32nm technology node SRAM cell which includes a comparison of mask SEM image, AIT image, resist image and simulation results. The ADT images of the SRAM pattern were of high quality even though the mask patters were not corrected for OPC or any EUV-specific effects. Image simulation results were in good agreement with the printing results
Pensando un rediseño de agroecosistemas campesinos del Chaco Semiárido argentino: el caso de la asociación campesinos del Valle del Conlara (San Luis, Argentina)
La expansión del modelo de agricultura industrial en la región chaqueña ha generado fuertes cambios ambientales y sociales (desmontes masivos, pérdida de biodiversidad, expulsión de campesinos). Desde 2009, estudiantes, docentes e investigadores de la Universidad de Buenos Aires trabajan junto a campesinos y técnicos locales de la Asociación Campesinos del Valle del Conlara (San Luis, Argentina; ACVC), en pensar cómo mejorar la cantidad, calidad y estabilidad de la oferta forrajera del monte nativo. Partimos de una caracterización preliminar de los agroecosistemas campesinos, publicada en SOCLA (2013). Aquí, nos proponemos compartir las reflexiones sobre alternativas de rediseño y manejo agroecológico, así como los trabajos que se realizaron en la ACVC en este sentido.
