Coset Character Identities in Superstring Compactifications

We apply the coset character identities (generalization of Jacobi's abstruse identity) to compact and noncompact Gepner models. In the both cases, we prove that the partition function actually vanishes due to the spacetime supersymmetry. In the case of the compact models and discrete parts of the noncompact models, the partition function includes the expected vanishing factor. But the character identities used to the continuous part of the noncompact models suggest that these models have twice as many supersymmetry as expected. This fact is an evidence for the conjecture that the holographically dual of the string theory on an actually singular Calabi-Yau manifold is a super CONFORMAL field theory. The extra SUSY charges are interpreted as the superconformal S generators.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, no figure. v2:corrected typos, added detailed calculations, added references. v3:corrected typo

    BPS Saturation from Null Reduction

    Get PDF
We show that any dd-dimensional strictly stationary, asymptotically Minkowskian solution (d≥4)(d\ge 4) of a null reduction of d+1d+1-dimensional pure gravity must saturate the BPS bound provided that the KK vector field can be identified appropriately. We also argue that it is consistent with the field equations.Comment: 10 page

    LaCo2B2: A Co-based layered superconductor with a ThCr2Si2-type structure

LaCo2B2 with a ThCr2Si2-type structure composed of alternately stacked La and CoB layers exhibits metallic electrical conductivity and Pauli paramagnetic behavior down to 2K. Bulk superconductivity with a Tc of ~4K emerges upon substitution with dopant elements; i.e., isovalent substitution to form (La1-xYx)Co2B2, or aliovalent substitution to form La(Co1-xFex)2B2. Highly covalent bonding between Co 3d and B 2p levels in the CoB layers, which is caused by the B 2p level being shallower than the Fermi level, removes magnetic ordering from Co 3d electrons even in the undoped samples.Comment: 3 figure

Families of Roles: A new theory of occurrent-dependent roles

    Get PDF
PublishedRoles are important both theoretically and practically for modelling the world around us. Although many theories of roles have been proposed, there remain aspects which are little understood. In this paper we investigate roles and their contexts from a temporal point of view.We introduce the idea of a family of occurrent-dependent roles as a means to organise prospective and retrospective derived roles around an original role from which they are derived. By this means we account for the existence of groups of similar roles which are difficult to distinguish without a careful analysis of the temporal aspects. Following detailed informal discussion, we present a preliminary formalisation of the key concepts and relations.Air Force Research Laborator

Spin configuration in a frustrated ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic thin film system

We have studied the magnetic configuration in ultrathin antiferromagnetic Mn films grown around monoatomic steps on an Fe(001) surface by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and ab-initio-parametrized self-consistent real-space tight binding calculations in which the spin quantization axis is independent for each site thus allowing noncollinear magnetism. Mn grown on Fe(001) presents a layered antiferromagnetic structure. In the regions where the Mn films overgrows Fe steps the magnetization of the surface layer is reversed across the steps. Around these defects a frustration of the antiferromagnetic order occurs. Due to the weakened magnetic coupling at the central Mn layers, the amount of frustration is smaller than in Cr and the width of the wall induced by the step does not change with the thickness, at least for coverages up to seven monolayers.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Optical Flow on Evolving Surfaces with an Application to the Analysis of 4D Microscopy Data

We extend the concept of optical flow to a dynamic non-Euclidean setting. Optical flow is traditionally computed from a sequence of flat images. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce variational motion estimation for images that are defined on an evolving surface. Volumetric microscopy images depicting a live zebrafish embryo serve as both biological motivation and test data.Comment: The final publication is available at link.springer.co
