    Role of lipid profile in proven premature coronary artery disease and its first degree relatives- a tertiary care hospital based study in South-Eastern region of Rajasthan, India

    Background: Cardiovascular diseases have become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in adult population of Indian sub-continent. Aim of the study was to compare the serum lipid patterns in patients with proven premature CAD and its first degree relative in a tertiary care hospital of South-eastern region of Rajasthan, India.Methods: 200 patients with the primary diagnosis of premature coronary artery disease were enrolled. These patients and their 643 first-degree relatives, who were in the coronary age group 25 years and above also enrolled for the purpose of the study. Fasting lipid profile was estimated.Results: 36.5% of the males and 4.5% female patients were having abnormal cholesterol levels. 30.5 % of male of premature CAD were having high LDL levels as compared to only 2.5% of the females (p<0.05). High LDL level was 33.0%. Low HDL cholesterol in CAD patients were in 36.0% of males and 4.0% of the females (p<0.05). High Triglyceride levels (53.5%) in the CAD patients were 46.5% males and 6.5% females. (p<0.05). Irrespective of sex, majority of relatives  (70.7%) were having desirable total cholesterol levels while high total cholesterol was there in only 10.1% of the relatives.21.4% of male relatives of CAD patients were having abnormal LDL levels as compared to 7.4% of the females (p<0.05).Conclusions: For hyper cholestolaemia, routine screening of all adults older than 20 years is recommended. Therapeutic targets for lipid levels are recommended depending on overall risk for patients with CAD or a CAD risk equivalent such as diabetes or peripheral arterial disease.

    Large scale deployment of Micro Grids besides the advanced metering, demand response, reliable communications infrastructure set up has been incorporated into the technological road map of the future smart power grid. To congregate the operation and control needs of distributed energy resources in Micro-Grids the Multi-Agent System (MAS) seem to have splendid features. MAS is an emerging sub-field of Distributed Artificial Intelligence that has the potential to manage the changing face of electric power grid by inculcating intelligent agents into Micro-Grids. To create agents and implement MAS a framework, a platform is obligatory where in the agents reside and operate from. There is a wide range of Multi-agent platforms available on the web like Aglet, Grasshopper, DESIRE, Jadex, ZEUS, JADE etc. Each agent platform has to be evaluated according to the some criteria that have been mentioned in this endeavor. A brief relative appraisal of an assortment of agent platforms has been provided. According to various noteworthy researches the most used platform in micro-grid applications is JADE.     Evaluation of serum lipid profile in cases of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia

    Background: According to the current knowledge, rise in the serum triglyceride level is a major contributor in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and eclampsia. The present study was designed to compare the changes in lipid profile in normal pregnancy, pre-eclampsia & eclampsia cases.Methods: A case control study was done consisting of total 100 study subjects, 75 already diagnosed pre-eclamptic & eclamptic women and 25 normotensive pregnant women. Age range was 18-35 years, gestational age 28 weeks to term were included. Serum Total Cholesterol (TC), triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol by enzymatic colorimetric method were done.Results: Results showed that level of serum triglycerides in mild pre-eclampsia (156.22 ± 66.5 mg/dl), severe pre-eclampsia (168.30 ± 68.1 mg/dl) & eclampsia (224.89 ± 84.40 mg/dl) as compared to normal pregnant women (130.95 ± 44.64 mg/dl) was increased significantly (P <0.05). Other parameters TC, HDL-C, LDL-C were not changed significantly.Conclusions: The findings of the present study are consistent with previous studies, suggesting increased levels of serum triglyceride as an important factor in the pathological process of preeclampsia & eclampsia. This may help in developing strategies for prevention or early diagnosis of the disorder

    Bone marrow evaluation of patients having pancytopenia at tertiary care center, M. Y. hospital, Indore, India: one-year study

    Background: Pancytopenia is reduction of all three formed elements of blood below the normal reference range leading to anemia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow aspiration is extremely helpful in evaluating the cause of pancytopenia by cellularity and cytology in order to prevent grave complications and mortality as the underlying pathology determines the management and prognosis of the patients. Aim of research study was to evaluate the patients having pancytopenia at tertiary care center, M.Y.H. Hospital, Indore, India.Methods: The present study was carried out over a period of one year from 2017 to 2018, in the Department of Pathology, M. Y. Hospital, Indore. During this period, a total of 109 bone marrow smears were examined. Out of these, 42 cases had the clinical presentation of pancytopenia. A detailed study was done regarding clinical examination and hematological and radiological investigations.Results: In this study 42 cases of pancytopenia were examined over a period of one year. The commonest cause of pancytopenia was megaloblastic anemia (33.34%) followed by aplastic anemia (19.05%). Others includes myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute leukemia, erythroid hyperplasia and plasmacytosis.Conclusions: Bone marrow aspiration can diagnose majority of the cases of pancytopenia. Megaloblastic anemia and aplastic anemia are the commonest causes of pancytopenia

    Accidental Corrosive Acid Intoxication - a Case Report

    Background: Acute poisonings with corrosive substances cause serious chemical injuries to upper gastrointestinal tract, the most common site being the oesophagus and the stomach. The degree and extent of damage depends on several factors like the type of substance, the morphologic form of the agent, the quantity, and the intent. In the acute stage, perforation and necrosis may occur.  Injury to UGI tract due to ingestion of acidic corrosive substances is common in India. Acute corrosive intoxications constitute a major problem in clinical toxicology since the most commonly affected population are the young with psychic disorders, suicidal intent and alcohol addiction.Case Report: We report a fatal case of accidental corrosive acid ingestion with a brief review of literature.Conclusion: Ingestion of a corrosive substance can produce severe injury to the gastrointestinal tract and can even result in death. Stringent legislation is necessary in developing countries to curtail unrestricted access of adults to dangerous corrosive chemicals

    Biochemical response and host-pathogen relation of stalk rot fungi in early stages of maize (Zea mays L.)

    Stalk rot is a destructive disease in maize caused by Fusarium and Macrophomina species. A study was carried out to understand the mode of infection, host biochemical response and comparison of inoculation techniques in Fusarium verticillioides and Macrophomina phaseolina in maize. In seed inoculation experiment, high mycelia growth on seed surface lead to rotting in 36.6% of seeds inoculated by F. verticillioides and 10.0% seeds in M. phaseolina. In seedling inoculation experiment, twenty one days old seedlings raised in glasshouse were inoculated with spore suspension of both pathogens, respectively in two sets, resulting in symptoms like tip drying, necrotic lesions, chlorotic bands, pale green leaves and yellowing of margins in varying numbers. Significant result was the appearance of asymptomatic seedlings in F. verticillioides infection which was confirmed by the increase in total soluble phenols (9.39 mg/g) and total sugars (5.33 mg/g) content in comparison to the control (2.84 mg/g total soluble solid (TSS) and 2.18 mg/g total soluble phenols) and symptomatic ones. While in M. phaseolina, total contents of sugar and soluble phenols were on part in asymptomatic and control (uninfected), depicting disease escape to be the possible cause of this phenotypic expression. The study concludes that inoculation techniques for screening of genotypes play a major role. The appearance and non appearance of symptoms in infected host can mislead the identification of resistant genotypes.Key words: Maize, Fusarium verticillioides, Macrophomina phaseolina, total soluble sugar, total soluble phenols

    Fatal Dog Bite Injury – A Case Report

    Background: Dog bite is one of the most common childhood accidents causing significant morbidity and mortality in pediatrics age group (1). The exposed position compounded by the short stature of children makes the face very vulnerable to dog bite or animal bite injuries. Unlike wounds inflicted by assaults and accidents, animal bite wounds are distinctive as they are puncture type deep wounds which are injected by the bite force, with inoculums of pathogenic bacteria from the saliva of the attacking dog.Case Report: A case of a 2 month-old child who had succumbed to multiple facial and head bite injuries is presented. At autopsy, multiple bite wounds were noted on the upper part of body like face, head, chest and abdomen. Distinctive bite marks diagnostic of canine dentition were present, most prominently on the head, face and chest. Death was due to cranio-cerebral damage.Conclusion: Public health notification should occur for all dog bites. This would facilitate the development of regional dog bite registries with information on incidence and dogs at risk, which in turn could guide policies such as leash laws and licensing

    A cross-sectional study of factors affecting seasonality in bipolar disorder

    Background. Researchers have evinced interest in the effect of seasonal variations on mood and behavioural patterns in affective disorders.  Objective. To study seasonality in bipolar disorder (BD) patients and also the factors affecting this seasonality.  Method. Forty-nine patients with BD in euthymic phase were recruited and analysed using the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire and Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire.  Results. Most of the patients were morning types but chronotype had no influence on seasonality. Age of patient and number of episodes were the most important factors affecting seasonality in BD.  Conclusion. Seasonality and its influencing factors must be considered while managing bipolar disorder
