    Transurethral resection for botryoid bladder rhabdomyosarcoma

    The outcome of multimodal therapy for localized bladder rhabdomyosarcoma is quite good in terms of morbidity, and conservative surgery is generally recommended. However, in cases originating in the bladder neck, tumorectomy or partial cystectomy has adverse effects on bladder function. A 2-year-old girl underwent transurethral resection of a bladder tumor (TUR-BT), chemotherapy consisting of vincristine, actinomycin-D, and cyclophosphamide, and radiotherapy. She was in remission for 3 years when frequent urination became evident. Her bladder capacity and compliance were low; however, her urinary symptom was controlled using anticholinergic medication. Accordingly, TUR-BT could be an optional approach for bladder rhabdomyosarcoma

    Dynamics of evaporative cooling in magnetically trapped atomic hydrogen

    We study the evaporative cooling of magnetically trapped atomic hydrogen on the basis of the kinetic theory of a Bose gas. The dynamics of trapped atoms is described by the coupled differential equations, considering both the evaporation and dipolar spin relaxation processes. The numerical time-evolution calculations quantitatively agree with the recent experiment of Bose-Einstein condensation with atomic hydrogen. It is demonstrated that the balance between evaporative cooling and heating due to dipolar relaxation limits the number of condensates to 9x10^8 and the corresponding condensate fraction to a small value of 4% as observed experimentally.Comment: 5 pages, REVTeX, 3 eps figures, Phys.     Optimization of evaporative cooling towards a large number of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms

    We study the optimization of evaporative cooling in trapped bosonic atoms on the basis of quantum kinetic theory of a Bose gas. The optimized cooling trajectory for 87^{87}Rb atoms indicates that the acceleration of evaporative cooling around the transition point of Bose-Einstein condensation is very effective against loss of trapped atoms caused by three-body recombination. The number of condensed atoms is largely enhanced by the optimization, more than two orders of magnitude in our present calculation using relevant experimental parameters, as compared with the typical value given by the conventional evaporative cooling where the frequency of radio-frequency magnetic field is swept exponentially. In addition to this optimized cooling, it is also shown that highly efficient evaporative cooling can be achieved by an initial exponential and then a rapid linear sweep of frequency.Comment: 7 pages, REVTeX, 5 eps figures, Phys.     Recurrence of anal canal duplication with abscess formation

    Anal canal duplication, a rare congenital disease, is often noticed in fistulas behind the native anus and is sometimes accompanied by abscesses and cysts. The perineal approach and posterior sagittal approach are considered surgical options. A 6-year-old girl with anal canal duplication with abscess formation underwent surgery using the perineal approach but experienced relapse. The foci were completely removed using a posterior sagittal approach, and her condition was cured completely. To prevent the risk of abscess formation, fistulation, and malignancy, it is important to completely remove the fistula/abscess cavity using the posterior sagittal approach during the first treatment or by switching from the perineal approach to the posterior sagittal approach when necessary.     Amylase Levels Are Useful for Diagnosing Omphalomesenteric Cysts: A Case Report

    Omphalomesenteric cysts are an exceedingly rare type of embryologic remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct. Owing to its rarity and unspecific imaging findings, it is occasionally difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Herein, we report the case of a 15-month-old female with an omphalomesenteric cyst that presented as a painful abdominal mass. Imaging showed a 4 cm cystic lesion just beneath the umbilicus, which also contained a 1 cm enhanced lesion. On the immediate right side of this cyst, a 7 cm hematoma was found within the abdominal wall. Aspiration revealed bloody fluid with an amylase level of 38,250 U/L. She was then diagnosed with an omphalomesenteric cyst, with aberrant pancreas and associated hematoma of the abdominal wall. These findings were confirmed with laparotomy and subsequent pathological examinations. The high level of amylase in the cyst led us to speculate the existence of ectopic pancreatic tissue. Thus, amylase measurement may be considered for the diagnosis of an omphalomesenteric cyst

    Risk factors for intestinal obstruction after Ladd procedure

    Intestinal obstruction is a common complication after Ladd procedure. Ninety-three cases who had undergone the Ladd procedure between 1977 and 2013 treated at our own institution were retrospectively reviewed to identify the causes and risk factors for intestinal obstruction. The Ladd procedure has been performed without any intestinal fixing. Of the 87 cases who survived to discharge, intestinal obstruction was observed in 22 (25.3%). Among the cases with intestinal obstruction, 13 (59.1%) showed intestinal ischemia at the initial operation; this incidence was notably high, although it is low when only those cases with another concurrent surgical digestive disease are considered. All cases of intestinal obstruction were caused not by recurrent volvulus, but by adhesion between the intestine and the mesentery. Intestinal fixing is not required to prevent recurrent volvulus, but it is important to achieve adequate widening of the mesenteric base. The risk of intestinal obstruction after the Ladd procedure, on the other hand, is high. Moreover, patients with intestinal ischemia have an increased risk of intestinal obstruction

    Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver: a case report and literature review

    Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) is a rare and aggressive malignancy associated with poor outcomes. MRT of the liver is even rarer, and little information has been described. We report the case of an 8-month-old boy with MRT of the liver. The tumor showed aggressive progression despite a multidisciplinary approach, and the patient died due to multiple organ failure 14 days after admission. Autopsy revealed the liver tumor and multiple metastases with negative immunohistochemistry for INI1/BAF47. A review of 53 cases of pediatric MRT of the liver is provided

    Evidence of homing of black rockfish Sebastes inermis using biotelemetry

    The black rockfish Sebastes inermis is one of the most important fishery species along the coast from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, Japan and is often found in rocks and Zostera areas. We conducted biotelemetry using coded ultrasonic transmitters to clarify the movement of the black rockfish that inhabited the seawall of the Kansai International Airport. We released 25 black rockfish at two points. One was the airport seawall and the other was side shallows off the Sensyu district. Seventeen black rockfish returned to their capture site after release. We used the V-test to determine whether the direction of movement was random or orientated. The black rockfish moved at random along the seawall within some hours after release (P> 0.05). Four hours after release, they moved to their home site intentionally (P< 0.0025)
